    Fostering oral presentation competence through a virtual reality-based task for delivering feedback

    While previous studies have stressed the importance of feedback delivered by experts, it is unclear whether students’ oral presentation competence can be fostered through innovative technology for delivering feedback. This experimental study examined the effectiveness of a virtual reality-based task, in which first-year undergraduate students practiced their presentation in a virtual environment and received feedback produced by the system, on their presentation competence components (i.e. cognition, behaviour and attitudes towards presenting). The effects were compared with a control condition, which was a face-to-face presentation task with expert feedback. The students’ performance was measured using pre- and post-test multiple-choice tests, validated rubrics, and self-evaluation instruments. Results revealed significant improvements from pre-test to post-test in all three presentation competence components, without a difference between the conditions. Furthermore, the self-evaluation tests showed that students who presented in virtual reality were appreciative of the detailed and analytical feedback they received. Because of sample size limitations, the effects found could not be generalised. Therefore, future research on a larger sample is needed to examine population effects. Follow-up studies should focus on the extent to which virtual reality-based tasks can encourage self-regulation skills for the effective and efficient integration of these tasks in presentation courses.</p

    Prospective study into the value of the automated Elecsys antimüllerian hormone assay for the assessment of the ovarian growing follicle pool

    ObjectiveTo evaluate a new fully automated assay measuring antimüllerian hormone (AMH; Roche Elecsys) against antral follicle count in women of reproductive age.DesignProspective cohort study.SettingHospital infertility clinics and academic centers.Patient(s)Four hundred fifty-one women aged 18 to 44 years, with regular menstrual cycles.Intervention(s)None.Main Outcome Measure(s)AMH and antral follicle count (AFC) determined at a single visit on day 2–4 of the menstrual cycle.Result(s)There was a statistically significant variance in AFC but not in AMH between centers. Both AFC and AMH varied by age (overall Spearman rho −0.50 for AFC and −0.47 for AMH), but there was also significant between-center variation in the relationship between AFC and age but not for AMH. There was a strong positive correlation between AMH and AFC (overall spearman rho 0.68), which varied from 0.49 to 0.87 between centers. An agreement table using AFC cutoffs of 7 and 15 showed classification agreement in 63.2%, 56.9% and 74.5% of women for low, medium, and high groups, respectively.Conclusion(s)The novel fully automated Elecsys AMH assay shows good correlations with age and AFC in women of reproductive age, providing a reproducible measure of the growing follicle pool

    Reactions of Ionised Pryridazine, 2-Aminopyrazine and 2-Aminopyridine and their a-Distonic Isomers.

    NoThe reactions of ionised pyridazine, aminopyrazine and aminopyridine and the corresponding ¿-distonic ions are examined by a combination of tandem mass spectrometric techniques, including analysis of metastable ion (MI), collision induced dissociation and neutralisation¿reionisation mass spectra (NRMS). Further insight into the relative stability and energy barriers towards tautomerism of each ionised heterocycle with its ¿-distonic isomer is obtained by computational methods. In all these systems, both the conventional radical-cation and the ¿-distonic tautomer are stable species which exist in discrete energy wells, with a significant barrier towards their interconversion. Although each ¿-distonic ion is sufficiently stable to survive neutralisation¿reionisation, the conventional ionised heterocycle is more stable in each case. The possibility of investigating proton-transport catalysis in the tautomerism of these ionic systems is discussed
