AbstractAn explicit Galerkin method is formulated by using rational basis functions. The characteristics of the rational difference scheme are investigated with regard to consistency, stability and numerical convergence of the method. Numerical results are also presented

Old wine in new skins: Does the old ethics work for the new medicine? This article investigates and analyses the shifts that have taken place in the discourse about morality and ethics as they have developed in the history of Western medicine. The author argues that many of the forms of moral reasoning aligned to certain practices of medical care in the past have become inappropriate and obsolete for the challenges of a new, postmodern situation in medical care. He specifically investigates the consciousness of limits which is characteristic of the contemporary discourse on medical ethics, and in this regard analyses three manifestations of these limits, viz. the limits of competence, of compassion and of the rights ofphysicians

Wireless fault monitoring of robotic cells using android tablet pcs within automotive production

    Get PDF
Published ArticleThis paper presents the work on the development of software for an Android based mobile device. The goal being not only for a working application, but also to optimise the development process to ensure a user friendly application. Android is an ideal platform for connecting man and machine in a fast moving production environment. With its current popularity and market share it allows engineers to easily create flexible software applications to monitor and control industrial processes and machines. This software if not properly designed can lead to stability and maintenance problems. The experience gained from developing, maintaining and improving a mobile application for monitoring production faults, results in the improved response between man and machine. Further on it will be shown how the application can be used for data capturing purposes, thereby simplifying the data capturing process

Energy poverty, shack fires and childhood burns

Burn injuries are a persisting challenge in South Africa. Energy poverty, prevalent in under-resourced communities, is a key contributor to the problem. The energy-poor rely on solid fuels and flammable hydrocarbons, such as paraffin, for energy services. The fuels are burnt in inefficient, leaky and unstable appliances, leading to health losses from pollutant emissions, burns, and conflagrations. Within cramped informal home settings, using flammable fuels and risky combustion technologies, the situation can become devastating, especially for young children. Those who survive fiery incidents have to contend with trauma and property losses that may lead to further impoverishment. Proactive intervention strategies are required and should include the broadening of access to safe and sustainable energy. We advocate greater enforcement of home appliance standards and targeted support for the distribution of proven alternative energy technologies, such as liquefied petroleum gas and solar power. Support and advocacy from professional and citizen groups would be necessary to ensure that government prioritises the safe energy requirements of poor citizens

Published ArticleThe article focuses on the interplay between print advertisements and literary genres such as poetry, drama, folklore, etc. This interplay may be used to develop an advertisement's point of interest to attract attention from a specific target audience. Based on previous research we hypothesise that literary genres are exploited as a means to engage audiences. The study aims to give a description of the typical genre characteristics of modern literary genres in SA print advertising. It also endeavours to do a pragmatic analysis of these advertisements against the background of the specific literary genre category and the genre qualities of advertisements to identify the implied marketing message
