Towards a new crown indicator: Some theoretical considerations
The crown indicator is a well-known bibliometric indicator of research
performance developed by our institute. The indicator aims to normalize
citation counts for differences among fields. We critically examine the
theoretical basis of the normalization mechanism applied in the crown
indicator. We also make a comparison with an alternative normalization
mechanism. The alternative mechanism turns out to have more satisfactory
properties than the mechanism applied in the crown indicator. In particular,
the alternative mechanism has a so-called consistency property. The mechanism
applied in the crown indicator lacks this important property. As a consequence
of our findings, we are currently moving towards a new crown indicator, which
relies on the alternative normalization mechanism
Rivals for the crown: Reply to Opthof and Leydesdorff
We reply to the criticism of Opthof and Leydesdorff [arXiv:1002.2769] on the
way in which our institute applies journal and field normalizations to citation
counts. We point out why we believe most of the criticism is unjustified, but
we also indicate where we think Opthof and Leydesdorff raise a valid point

Design and characterization of SiON integrated optics components for optical coherence tomography
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a technique for high resolution imaging of biological tissues with a depth range of a few millimeters. OCT is based on interferometry to enable depth ranging. Currently, optical components for OCT are rather bulky and expensive; the use of integrated optical circuits presents a great opportunity to reduce costs and enhance system functionality and performance. We present the design and characterization of SiON-based integrated optics waveguides, splitters, couplers and interferometers for OCT operating at a wavelength of 1.3 um
NGC 2362: a Template for Early Stellar Evolution
We present UBVRI photometry for the young open cluster NGC 2362. From
analysis of the appropriate color-color and color-magnitude diagrams we derive
the fundamental parameters of the NGC 2362 cluster to be: age = 5 (+1-2) Myr,
distance = 1480 pc, E(B-V)=0.10 mag. The cluster age was independently
determined for both high mass (2.1 - 36Msun) and low mass (0.7 - 1.2Msun) stars
with excellent agreement between the ages derived using post-main sequence and
pre-main sequence evolutionary tracks for the high and low mass stars
respectively. Analysis of this cluster's color-magnitude diagram reveals a well
defined pre-main sequence (covering DeltaV ~ 9 magnitudes in V and extending
from early A stars to near the hydrogen burning limit) which makes this cluster
an ideal laboratory for pre-main sequence evolution studies.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, to be published in ApJ
SiON integrated optics elliptic couplers for Fizeau-based Optical Coherence Tomography
The use of integrated optics for Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) can offer significant cost reductions and new applications. We designed, fabricated, and characterized Silicon oxynitride (SiON) elliptic couplers that are used to focus light from a chip into the off-chip environment. Fizeau-based OCT measurements are performed and compared to calculations
Normal modes of a quasi-one-dimensional multi-chain complex plasma
We studied equally charged particles, suspended in a complex plasma, which
move in a plane and interact with a screened Coulomb potential (Yukawa type)
and with an additional external confining parabolic potential in one direction,
that makes the system quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D). The normal modes of the
system are studied in the presence of dissipation. We also investigated how a
perpendicular magnetic field couples the phonon modes with each other. Two
different ways of exciting the normal modes are discussed: 1) a uniform
excitation of the Q1D lattice, and 2) a local forced excitation of the system
in which one particle is driven by e.g. a laser. Our results are in very good
agreement with recent experimental findings on a finite single chain system
(Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 91}, 255003 (2003)). Predictions are made for the normal

Uit eerder onderzoek van PPO bleek dat met een hogere CO2-dosering en meer assimilatiebelichting een hogere productie van een betere kwaliteit kon worden gerealiseerd. De gegevens uit dat onderzoek werden gebruikt om een groeimodel voor groente (ECP) te valideren. Omdat het ECP-productiemodel niet geschikt bleek te zijn voor roos, is een vervolgonderzoek gestart om een dynamisch productiemodel te ontwikkelen specifiek voor roos. Zo kan de teler de productie en kwaliteit sturen door middel van drie "knoppen": CO2, licht en temperatuur. In deze publicatie staat een beschrijving van dit vervolgonderzoek. Twee CO2-concentraties (700 en 1400 ppm), twee lichtintensiteiten (3750 en 7100 lux), drie teelttemperaturen (17, 20 en 23°C) en twee gewasleeftijden (een jonge aanplant en een twee jaar oud gewas van ‘Indian Femma’) zijn onderling gecombineerd in 6 verschillende afdelingen. Daarnaast zijn twee extra afdelingen in gebruik genomen, waarin door middel van koelen met behulp van verneveling geprobeerd is CO2-verlies door ventilatie te vermindere
Correlated errors in Hipparcos parallaxes towards the Pleiades and the Hyades
We show that the errors in the Hipparcos parallaxes towards the Pleiades and
the Hyades open clusters are spatially correlated over angular scales of 2 to 3
deg, with an amplitude of up to 2 mas. This correlation is stronger than
expected based on the analysis of the Hipparcos catalog. We predict the
parallaxes of individual cluster members, pi_pm, from their Hipparcos proper
motions, assuming that all cluster members have the same space velocity. We
compare pi_pm with their Hipparcos parallaxes, pi_Hip, and find that there are
significant spatial correlations in pi_Hip. We derive a distance modulus to the
Pleiades of 5.58 +- 0.18 mag using the radial-velocity gradient method. This
value, agrees very well with the distance modulus of 5.60 +- 0.04 mag
determined using the main-sequence fitting technique, compared with the value
of 5.33 +- 0.06 inferred from the average of the Hipparcos parallaxes of the
Pleiades members. We show that the difference between the main-sequence fitting
distance and the Hipparcos parallax distance can arise from spatially
correlated errors in the Hipparcos parallaxes of individual Pleiades members.
Although the Hipparcos parallax errors towards the Hyades are spatially
correlated in a manner similar to those of the Pleiades, the center of the
Hyades is located on a node of this spatial structure. Therefore, the parallax
errors cancel out when the average distance is estimated, leading to a mean
Hyades distance modulus that agrees with the pre-Hipparcos value. We speculate
that these spatial correlations are also responsible for the discrepant
distances that are inferred using the mean Hipparcos parallaxes to some open
clusters. Finally, we note that our conclusions are based on a purely geometric
method and do not rely on any models of stellar isochrones.Comment: 33 pages including 10 Figures, revised version accepted for
