Realization of microwave quantum circuits using hybrid superconducting-semiconducting nanowire Josephson elements
We report the realization of quantum microwave circuits using hybrid
superconductor-semiconductor Josephson elements comprised of InAs nanowires
contacted by NbTiN. Capacitively-shunted single elements behave as transmon
qubits with electrically tunable transition frequencies. Two-element circuits
also exhibit transmon-like behavior near zero applied flux, but behave as flux
qubits at half the flux quantum, where non-sinusoidal current-phase relations
in the elements produce a double-well Josephson potential. These hybrid
Josephson elements are promising for applications requiring microwave

Leader-employee congruence of expected contributions in the employee-organization relationship
Employees' expected contributions can be incongruent with those of their leader. We examine the congruence effect of leaders' and employees' expected contributions on job satisfaction. Results of cross-level polynomial regressions on 947 employees and 224 leaders support the congruence effect. When expected contributions are congruent, employees are more satisfied with their job. Our findings suggest that employees enjoy high challenges, as long as these challenges are in harmony with the expected contributions of their leaders. Employees are less satisfied with their jobs both when their expected contributions were higher than their leaders' and when their expected contributions were lower than those of their leaders. Beyond the relevance of having high expected contributions, the findings highlight the crucial role played by the congruence of expected contributions of leaders and employees
Direct microwave measurement of Andreev-bound-state dynamics in a proximitized semiconducting nanowire
The modern understanding of the Josephson effect in mesosopic devices derives
from the physics of Andreev bound states, fermionic modes that are localized in
a superconducting weak link. Recently, Josephson junctions constructed using
semiconducting nanowires have led to the realization of superconducting qubits
with gate-tunable Josephson energies. We have used a microwave circuit QED
architecture to detect Andreev bound states in such a gate-tunable junction
based on an aluminum-proximitized InAs nanowire. We demonstrate coherent
manipulation of these bound states, and track the bound-state fermion parity in
real time. Individual parity-switching events due to non-equilibrium
quasiparticles are observed with a characteristic timescale . The of a topological nanowire
junction sets a lower bound on the bandwidth required for control of Majorana
bound states
Effects of short-term simultaneous infusion of dobutamine and terlipressin in patients with septic shock: the DOBUPRESS study
Background Terlipressin bolus infusion may reduce cardiac output and global oxygen supply. The present study was designed to determine whether dobutamine may counterbalance the terlipressin-induced depression in mixed-venous oxygen saturation (Svo2) in patients with catecholamine-dependent septic shock. Methods Prospective, randomized, controlled study performed in a university hospital intensive care unit. Septic shock patients requiring a continuous infusion of norepinephrine (0.9 ”g kgâ1 minâ1) to maintain mean arterial pressure (MAP) at 70 (sd 5) mm Hg were randomly allocated to be treated either with (i) sole norepinephrine infusion (control, n=20), (ii) a single dose of terlipressin 1 mg (n=19), or (iii) a single dose of terlipressin 1 mg followed by dobutamine infusion titrated to reverse the anticipated reduction in Svo2 (n=20). Systemic, pulmonary, and regional haemodynamic variables were obtained at baseline and after 2 and 4 h. Laboratory surrogate markers of organ (dys)function were tested at baseline and after 12 and 24 h. Results Terlipressin (with and without dobutamine) infusion preserved MAP at 70 (5) mm Hg, while allowing to reduce norepinephrine requirements to 0.17 (0.2) and 0.2 (0.2) ”g kgâ1 minâ1, respectively [vs1.4 (0.3) ”g kgâ1 minâ1 in controls at 4 h; each P<0.001]. The terlipressin-linked decrease in Svo2 was reversed by dobutamine at a mean dose of 20 (8) ”g kgâ1 minâ1 [Svo2 at 4 h: 59 (11)% vs 69 (12)%, P=0.028]. Conclusions In human catecholamine-dependent septic shock, terlipressin (with and without concomitant dobutamine infusion) increases MAP and markedly reduces norepinephrine requirements. Although no adverse events were noticed in the present study, potential benefits of increasing Svo2 after terlipressin bolus infusion need to be weighted against the risk of cardiovascular complications resulting from high-dose dobutamin

Observation of Andreev Reflection Enhanced Shot Noise
We have experimentally investigated the quasiparticle shot noise in
NbN/MgO/NbN superconductor - insulator - superconductor tunnel junctions. The
observed shot noise is significantly larger than theoretically expected. We
attribute this to the occurrence of multiple Andreev reflection processes in
pinholes present in the MgO barrier. This mechanism causes the current to flow
in large charge quanta (Andreev clusters), with a voltage dependent average
value of m = 1+ 2 Delta/eV times the electron charge. Because of this charge

Photodetection of early human bladder cancer based on the fluorescence of 5-aminolaevulinic acid hexylester-induced protoporphyrin IX: a pilot study
Exogenous administration of 5-aminolaevulinic acid (ALA) is becoming widely used to enhance the endogenous synthesis of protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) in photodynamic therapy (PDT) and fluorescence photodetection (PD). Recently, results have shown that the chemical modification of ALA into its more lipophilic esters circumvents limitations of ALA-induced PpIX like shallow penetration depth into deep tissue layers and inhomogeneous biodistribution and enhances the total PpIX formation. The present clinical pilot study assesses the feasibility and the advantages of a topical ALA ester-based fluorescence photodetection in the human bladder. In this preliminary study 5-aminolaevulinic acid hexylester (h-ALA) solutions, containing concentrations ranging from 4 to 16 mM, were applied intravesically to 25 patients. Effects of time and drug dose on the resulting PpIX fluorescence level were determined in vivo with an optical fibre-based spectrofluorometer. Neither local nor systemic side-effects were observed for the applied conditions. All conditions used yielded a preferential PpIX accumulation in the neoplastic tissue. Our clinical investigations indicate that with h-ALA a twofold increase of PpIX fluorescence intensity can be observed using 20-fold lower concentrations as compared to ALA
Estimating Nuisance Parameters in Inverse Problems
Many inverse problems include nuisance parameters which, while not of direct
interest, are required to recover primary parameters. Structure present in
these problems allows efficient optimization strategies - a well known example
is variable projection, where nonlinear least squares problems which are linear
in some parameters can be very efficiently optimized. In this paper, we extend
the idea of projecting out a subset over the variables to a broad class of
maximum likelihood (ML) and maximum a posteriori likelihood (MAP) problems with
nuisance parameters, such as variance or degrees of freedom. As a result, we
are able to incorporate nuisance parameter estimation into large-scale
constrained and unconstrained inverse problem formulations. We apply the
approach to a variety of problems, including estimation of unknown variance
parameters in the Gaussian model, degree of freedom (d.o.f.) parameter
estimation in the context of robust inverse problems, automatic calibration,
and optimal experimental design. Using numerical examples, we demonstrate
improvement in recovery of primary parameters for several large- scale inverse
problems. The proposed approach is compatible with a wide variety of algorithms
and formulations, and its implementation requires only minor modifications to

Frequency division multiplexing readout of 60 low-noise transition-edge sensor bolometers
We demonstrate multiplexing readout of 60 transition edge sensor (TES) bolometers operating at 90 mK using a frequency division multiplexing readout chain with bias frequencies ranging from 1 to 3.5 MHz and with a typical frequency spacing of 32 kHz. The readout chain starts with a two-stage SQUID amplifier and has a noise level of 9.5 pA/ â{ Hz } . We compare current-voltage curves and noise spectra of TESs measured in a single-pixel mode and in a multiplexing mode. We also map the noise equivalent power (NEP) and the saturation power of the bolometers in both modes, where there are 43 pixels that do not show more than 10% difference in NEP and 5% in saturation power when measured in single pixel and multiplex modes. We have read out a TES with an NEP of 0.45 aW/ â{ Hz } in the multiplexing-mode, which demonstrates the capability of reading out ultra-low noise TES bolometer arrays for space applications
