    Link Mining for Kernel-based Compound-Protein Interaction Predictions Using a Chemogenomics Approach

    Virtual screening (VS) is widely used during computational drug discovery to reduce costs. Chemogenomics-based virtual screening (CGBVS) can be used to predict new compound-protein interactions (CPIs) from known CPI network data using several methods, including machine learning and data mining. Although CGBVS facilitates highly efficient and accurate CPI prediction, it has poor performance for prediction of new compounds for which CPIs are unknown. The pairwise kernel method (PKM) is a state-of-the-art CGBVS method and shows high accuracy for prediction of new compounds. In this study, on the basis of link mining, we improved the PKM by combining link indicator kernel (LIK) and chemical similarity and evaluated the accuracy of these methods. The proposed method obtained an average area under the precision-recall curve (AUPR) value of 0.562, which was higher than that achieved by the conventional Gaussian interaction profile (GIP) method (0.425), and the calculation time was only increased by a few percent

    Minimum output entropy of bosonic channels: a conjecture

    The von Neumann entropy at the output of a bosonic channel with thermal noise is analyzed. Coherent-state inputs are conjectured to minimize this output entropy. Physical and mathematical evidence in support of the conjecture is provided. A stronger conjecture--that output states resulting from coherent-state inputs majorize the output states from other inputs--is also discussed.Comment: 15 pages, 12 figure

    Electrical Characterization of 1.8 MeV Proton-Bombarded ZnO

    We report on the electrical characterization of single-crystal ZnO and Au Schottky contacts formed thereon before and after bombarding them with 1.8 MeV protons. From capacitance–voltage measurements, we found that ZnO is remarkably resistant to high-energy proton bombardment and that each incident proton removes about two orders of magnitude less carriers than in GaN. Deep level transient spectroscopy indicates a similar effect: the two electron traps detected are introduced in extremely low rates. One possible interpretation of these results is that the primary radiation-induced defects in ZnO may be unstable at room temperature and anneal out without leaving harmful defects that are responsible for carrier compensation

    In this study important information was collected on cultivating catch crops and the subsequent crop of silage maize. Three catch crops and two different harvesting and ploughing-in dates were compared. Attention was paid to the yields of the catch crops and of the silage maize, the feed value, and the nitrogen efficiency. This report provides livestock farmers and intermediaires with more information to support their decisions about spring treatments of catch crops and their estimates of the cultivation risks

    Can contagious itch be affected by positive and negative suggestions?

    Contagious itch can be evoked by observing people scratching. Verbal suggestions about to-be-received itch can influence itch intensity, as shown by placebo research, but it is unknown whether this extends to contagious itch. The current study aimed to replicate prior findings that listening to scratching and rubbing sounds elicits contagious itch, and to investigate whether suggestions can modulate this process. Healthy participants (n = 140) received positive or negative suggestions about itch in response to the sounds (aimed to decrease or increase expected itch, respectively), or no specific suggestions as a control. Participants listened to a number of audio fragments with scratching and rubbing sounds. The amount of expected itch as well as itch sensation after each audio fragment were measured by self-report. Suggestions had no effect on the expected itch. Both rubbing and scratching sounds significantly elicited itch in all groups. Scratching sounds induced more itch than rubbing sounds exclusively in the control group. These findings indicate that short suggestions might be not effective enough to modify the expectations of people regarding contagious itch. Furthermore, suggestions modulate contagious itch to some degree, but not in the hypothesized direction.     The transrectus sheath preperitoneal mesh repair for inguinal hernia: technique, rationale, and results of the first 50 cases

    Item does not contain fulltextINTRODUCTION: Laparoscopic and endoscopic hernia repair popularized the preperitoneal mesh position due to promising results concerning less chronic pain. However, considerable proportions of severe adverse events, learning curves, or added costs have to be taken into account. Therefore, open preperitoneal mesh techniques may have more advantages. The open approach to the preperitoneal space (PPS) according to transrectus sheath preperitoneal (TREPP) mesh repair is through the sheath of the rectus abdominus muscle. This technique provides an excellent view of the PPS and facilitates elective or acute hernia reduction and mesh positioning under direct vision. In concordance with the promising transinguinal preperitoneal inguinal hernia repair experiences in the literature, we investigated the feasibility of TREPP. METHODS: A rationale description of the surgical technique, available level of evidence for thoughts behind technical considerations. Furthermore, a descriptive report of the clinical outcomes of our pilot case series including 50 patients undergoing the TREPP mesh repair. RESULTS: A consecutive group of our first 50 patients were operated with the TREPP technique. No technical problems were experienced during the development of this technique. No conversions to Lichtenstein repair were necessary. No recurrences and no chronic pain after a mean follow-up of 2 years were notable findings. CONCLUSION: This description of the technique shows that the TREPP mesh repair might be a promising method because of the complete preperitoneal view, the short learning curve, and the stay-away-from-the-nerves principle.     Gender differences in tumor characteristics, treatment allocation and survival in stage I–III pancreatic cancer:a nationwide study

    Introduction: Sex and gender are modulators of health and disease and may have impact on treatment allocation and survival in patients with cancer. In this study, we analyzed the impact of sex and gender on treatment allocation and overall survival in patients with stage I-III pancreatic cancer. Methods: Patients with stage I-III pancreatic cancer diagnosed between 2015 and 2020 were selected from the nationwide Netherlands Cancer Registry. Associations between sex and gender and the probability of receiving surgical and/or systemic treatment were examined with multivariable logistic regression analyses. Overall survival was assessed with log rank test and multivariable Cox proportional hazard analysis. Results: Among 6855 patients, 51.2 % were female. Multivariable logistic regression analyses with adjustment for known confounders (age, performance status, comorbidities, tumor location, tumor stage and previous malignancies) showed that females less often received systemic chemotherapy compared to males (OR 0.799, 95 %CI 0.703–0.909, p &lt; .001). No difference was found in the probability for undergoing surgical resection. Furthermore, females had worse overall survival compared to males (median OS 8.5 and 9.2 months respectively, 95 %CI 8.669–9.731). Conclusion: This nationwide study found that female patients with stage I-III pancreatic cancer significantly less often received systemic treatment and had worse overall survival as compared to males. Disparities in pancreatic cancer care can be decreased by recognizing and resolving potential obstacles or biases in treatment decision-making.</p
