On the Physical Meaning of the Isothermal Titration Calorimetry Measurements in Calorimeters with Full Cells
We have performed a detailed study of the thermodynamics of the titration process in an isothermal titration calorimeter with full cells. We show that the relationship between the enthalpy and the heat measured is better described in terms of the equation Δ H = Winj + Q (where Winj is the work necessary to carry out the titration) than in terms of ΔH = Q. Moreover, we show that the heat of interaction between two components is related to the partial enthalpy of interaction at infinite dilution of the titrant component, as well as to its partial volume of interaction at infinite dilution
The role of confidence in the evolution of the Spanish economy: empirical evidence from an ARDL model
The aim of this paper is to verify the existence and to determine the nature of long-term relationships between economic agents' confidence, measured by the Economic Sentiment Index (ESI), with some of the "fundamentals" of the Spanish economy. In particular, by modeling this type of relations, we try to determine whether confidence is a dependent (explained) or independent (explanatory) variable. Along with confidence, in our model we incorporate variables such as risk premium of sovereign debt, financial market volatility, unemployment, inflation, public and private debt and the net lending/net borrowing of the economy. For the purpose of obtaining some empirical evidence on the exogenous or endogenous character of the above mentioned variables an ARDL (Autoregressive-Distributed Lag) model is formulated. The model is estimated with quarterly data of the Spanish economy for the period 1990-2012. Our findings suggest that: (a) unemployment is the dependent variable, (b) there is an inverse relationship between ESI in Spain and unemployment; and (c) the Granger causality goes from confidence to unemployment
Modelling and simulation of heat and mass transfer for liquid type foods under high pressure processes
High Pressure (HP) Processing has turned out to be very effective in order to prolong the shelf life of some foods. This paper deals with the modelling and simulation of the effect of the combination of high pressure with thermal treatments on food. The behaviour and stability of this model are checked by various numerical examples. Furthermore, a simplified version of the model is presented and compared with the full model in terms of accuracy and computational time. The models developed provide a useful tool to design suitable industrial equipments and optimize the processes

Detecting semantic violations of lock-free data structures through C++ contracts
The use of synchronization mechanisms in multithreaded applications is essential on shared-memory multi-core architectures. However, debugging parallel applications to avoid potential failures, such as data races or deadlocks, can be challenging. Race detectors are key to spot such concurrency bugs; nevertheless, if lock-free data structures are used, these may emit a significant number of false positives. In this paper, we present a framework for semantic violation detection of lock-free data structures which makes use of contracts, a novel feature of the upcoming C++20, and a customized version of the ThreadSanitizer race detector. We evaluate the detection accuracy of the framework in terms of false positives and false negatives leveraging some synthetic benchmarks which make use of the SPSC and MPMC lock-free queue structures from the Boost C++ library. Thanks to this framework, we are able to check the correct use of lock-free data structures, thus reducing the number of false positives. This work has been partially funded by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness through Project Grant TIN2016-79637-P (BigHPC - Towards Unification of HPC and Big Data Paradigms) and the European Commission through Grant No. 801091 (ASPIDE - Exascale programmIng models for extreme data processing)
Influence of soil pH in the effects of ZnONPs on the antioxidant activities and Zn uptake in three plant species (T aestivum, R. sativus and Z. mays)
In recent years, the study of phytotoxicity of NPs has made rapid progress, but important issues remain to be solved, among them, the role of soil and the importance of the physicochemical soil characteristics for their toxicity and accumulation potential
