    Quantum diffusion on a cyclic one dimensional lattice

    The quantum diffusion of a particle in an initially localized state on a cyclic lattice with N sites is studied. Diffusion and reconstruction time are calculated. Strong differences are found for even or odd number of sites and the limit N->infinit is studied.     A total of 37 new drug entities were approved in 2022; although that year registered the lowest number of drug approvals since 2016, the TIDES class consolidated its presence with a total of five authorizations (four peptides and one oligonucleotide). Interestingly, 23 out of 37 drugs were first-in-class and thus received fast-track designation by the FDA in categories such as breakthrough therapy, priority review voucher, orphan drug, accelerated approval, and so on.     From the medical, pharmaceutical, and social perspectives, 2021 has been a year dominated by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, despite this global health crisis, the pharmaceutical industry has continued its endeavors, and 2021 could be considered an excellent year in terms of the drugs accepted by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Thus, during this year, the FDA has approved 50 novel drugs, of which 36 are new chemical entities and 14 biologics. It has also authorized 10 TIDES (8 peptides, 2 oligonucleotides), in addition to 2 antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) whose structures contain peptides. Thus, TIDES have accounted for about 24% of the approvals in the various drug categories. Importantly, this percentage has surpassed the figure in 2020 (10%), thus reflecting the remarkable success of TIDES.     Early hydration study of standard and doped Alite-Belite-Ye’elimite (ABY) cements through Synchrotron Radiation

    The manufacturing of ye'elimite-rich cements releases from 15 to 37%, depending on their composition, less CO2 to the atmosphere than ordinary Portland cement (OPC). BYF cements containing belite, ye’elimite and ferrite as main crystalline phases, are promising eco-friendly binders. Nevertheless, belite, its main phase, shows a slow hydrating behaviour and the mechanical strengths are lower than OPC at early ages. Some alternatives to solve this problem are: i) forming alite jointly with belite and ye’elimite during clinkering, Alite Belite Ye’elimite (ABY) clinkers. The hydration of alite and ye’elimite would develop high mechanical strengths at early ages, and belite contributes to later curing times; ii) a second alternative is the stabilisation of alpha forms of belite using dopants such as boron named here after dABY. In this work, two different types of ABY clinkers (standard and doped) have been prepared and characterized to understand their different hydration mechanisms at the same water-to-cement (w/c) ratio. The clinkers have been prepared using CaF2 and ZnO as mineralizers, and borax as dopant agent to stabilize alpha forms of belite (’H-C2S). Afterwards, 14 wt% of anhydrite (as soluble sulphate source) was added to prepare the corresponding cements. Finally, the hydration study was performed at w/c ratio of 0.5. Here, an in-situ hydration study using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction (SXRPD) for the first 14 hours of hydration is reported. Moreover, these results will be combined with the ex-situ laboratory X-ray powder diffraction study (LXRPD) at 1 day of hydration and calorimetric results.     Review of parameters influencing the structural response of a submerged body under cavitation conditions

    Submerged structures that operate under extreme flows are prone to suffer large scale cavitation attached to their surfaces. Under such conditions the added mass effects differ from the expected ones in pure liquids. Moreover, the existence of small gaps between the structure and surrounding bodies filled with fluid also influence the dynamic response. A series of experiments and numerical simulations have been carried out with a truncated NACA0009 hydrofoil mounted as a cantilever beam at the LMH-EPFL cavitation tunnel. The three first modes of vibration have been determined and analysed under various hydrodynamic conditions ranging from air and still water to partial cavitation and supercavitation. A remote nonintrusive excitation system with piezoelectric patches has been used for the experiments. The effects of the cavity properties and the lateral gap size on the natural frequencies and mode shapes have been determined. As a result, the significance of several parameters in the design of such structures is discussed

    2023 FDA TIDES (Peptides and Oligonucleotides) Harvest

    A total of nine TIDES (pepTIDES and oligonucleoTIDES) were approved by the FDA during 2023. The approved four oligonucleotide are indicated for various types of disorders, including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, geographic atrophy, primary hyperoxaluria type 1, and polyneuropathy of hereditary transthyretin-mediated amyloidosis. All oligonucleotides showed chemically modified structures, to enhance their stability and therapeutic effectiveness as antisense or aptamer oligomers. Some of them demonstrate various types of conjugation to driving ligands. The approved peptides comprise various structures including linear, cyclic, lipopeptides and with diverse applications. Interestingly, the FDA has granted an orphan drug designation for a first peptide-based drug as a highly selective chemokine antagonist. Furthermore, Rett syndrome has found its first ever core symptoms treatment, which is also peptide-based one.     Euclid preparation: XI. Mean redshift determination from galaxy redshift probabilities for cosmic shear tomography

    The analysis of weak gravitational lensing in wide-field imaging surveys is considered to be a major cosmological probe of dark energy. Our capacity to constrain the dark energy equation of state relies on an accurate knowledge of the galaxy mean redshift ⟨z⟩. We investigate the possibility of measuring ⟨z⟩ with an accuracy better than 0.002 (1 + z) in ten tomographic bins spanning the redshift interval 0.2  99.8%. The zPDF approach can also be successful if the zPDF is de-biased using a spectroscopic training sample. This approach requires deep imaging data but is weakly sensitive to spectroscopic redshift failures in the training sample. We improve the de-biasing method and confirm our finding by applying it to real-world weak-lensing datasets (COSMOS and KiDS+VIKING-450)

    Functional assessment of cancer therapy questionnaire for breast cancer (FACT-B+4): Italian version validation

    BACKGROUND: Improvements in breast cancer diagnosis and treatment led to an increased incidence of survivors' rate. The healthcare system has to face new problems related not only to the treatment of the disease, but also to the management of the quality of life after the diagnosis. The aim of this study was to validate the Italian version of the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy - Breast (FACT-B+4) questionnaire and to evaluate its reliability. METHODS: The questionnaire was administered twice, with an interval of three days between each administration, to a cohort of women of the Breast Surgical Unit, PoliclincoUmberto I. Cronbach's alpha was used as a measure of the internal consistency of the Italian version. RESULTS: The Italian version of the tool was administered to 55 subjects. The Cronbach's alpha for most scores registered values >0.7, both at baseline and at the follow-up analysis, therefore the subscale showed good internal consistency. CONCLUSIONS: The Italian version of FACT-B+4 demonstrated acceptable reliability properties in the Breast Unit patients. The use of this questionnaire seemed to be effective and in line with the results derived from the English and Spanishversions. Internal consistency and validity had similar performance results

    An Automatic Tree Search Algorithm for the Tisserand Graph

    The Tisserand graph (TG) is a graphical tool commonly employed in the preliminary design of gravity-assisted trajectories. The TG is a two-dimensional map showing essential orbital information regarding the Keplerian orbits resulting from the close passage by one or more massive bodies, given the magnitude of the hyperbolic excess speed (vv_{\infty}) and the minimum allowed pericenter height for each passage. Contours of constant vv_{\infty} populate the TG. Intersections between contours allow to link consecutive flybys and build sequences of encounters en route to a selected destination. When the number of perturbing bodies is large and many vv_{\infty} levels are considered, the identification of all the possible sequences of encounters through the visual inspection of the TG becomes a laborious task. Besides, if the sequences are used as input for a numerical code for trajectory design and optimization, an automated examination of the TG is desirable. This contribution describes an automatic technique to explore the TG and find all the encounter paths. The technique is based on a tree search method, and the intersections between contours are found using the regula-falsi scheme. The method is validated through comparisons with solutions available in the open literature. Examples are given of application to interplanetary mission scenarios, including the coupling with a trajectory optimizer
