La historia de la Iglesia en la historiografía chilena 1965-2015 (I)
The history of the Catholic Church in Chile has been treated from multiple perspectives, both by ecclesiastical historians and civilians. Equally varied are the themes addressed by those authors, which reflect the cross-cutting nature of the incidence and influence of the Church in different spheres of national life both in the Hispanic period, the process of independ- ence and its Republican life. This article sets out the main contributions that Chilean historiography has provided to the history of the Church in the last fifty years, according to a selection of topics such as education, the world of ideas, evangelisation and missions, religious congregations, clergy, popular religiosity, Chilean saints and relations with the State.La historia de la Iglesia en Chile ha sido tratada desde múltiples perspectivas, tanto por historiadores eclesiásticos como civiles. Igualmente variadas son las temáticas abordadas por dichos autores, que reflejan la transversalidad de la incidencia e influencia de la Iglesia en distintos ámbitos de la vida nacional tanto en el período hispano, en el proceso de Independencia y en su vida republicana. En el presente artículo se exponen las principales aportaciones que en los últimos cincuenta años ha brindado la historiografía chilena a la historia de la Iglesia, de acuerdo a una selección de temas como la educación, el mundo de las ideas, evangelización y misiones, las congregaciones religiosas, el clero, religio- sidad popular, santos y relaciones con el Estado
OMEGAPIX: 3D integrated circuit prototype dedicated to the ATLAS upgrade Super LHC pixel project
In late 2008, an international consortium for development of vertically integrated (3D) readout electronics was created to explore features available from this technology. In this paper, the OMEGAPIX circuit is presented. It is the first front-end ASIC prototype designed at LAL in 3D technology. It has been submitted on May 2009. SMARCB1/INI1 inactivation in renal medullary carcinoma
Aims: Renal medullary carcinoma (RMC), a rare and highly aggressive tumour which occurs in patients with sickle-cell disease, shares many clinicopathological features with collecting duct carcinoma (CDC). The molecular mechanisms underlying RMC and CDC are mainly unknown, and there is ongoing debate about their status as distinct entities. Loss of expression of SMARCB1/INI1, a chromatin remodelling regulator and repressor of cyclin D1 transcription, has been reported recently in RMC. The aim of our study was to investigate if such loss of expression is specific for RMC. SMARCB1/INI1 genetic alterations and cyclin D1 expression were also studied.
Methods and results: Using immunochemistry, neoplastic cells showed complete loss of SMARCB1/INI1 expression in all six cases of RMC but in only one of 22 cases of CDC. In two RMC cases investigated, comparative genomic hybridization demonstrated complete loss of one SMARCB1/INI1 allele, with no other genomic imbalances, and no mutations were found on the remaining allele. Cyclin D1 was expressed in all RMCs, suggesting that SMARCB1/INI1 inactivation may result in increased cyclin D1 transcription.
Conclusions: The specific SMARCB1/INI1 inactivation observed in RMCs suggests that RMC and CDC are different entities
Pobreza franciscana y economía monástica: Prácticas cotidianas de frailes y monjas en Santiago de Chile (1790-1820)
El presente artículo aborda las prácticas cotidianas de frailes y monjas en Santiago de Chile, durante el tránsito del siglo XVIII al XIX. Específicamente compara la observancia del voto de pobreza según la espiritualidad de los santos de Asís: San Francisco y Santa Clara. A la luz del registro, análisis e interpretación de fuentes conventuales; se plantea que fue precisamente la misma regla y su mitigación la que permitió los «excesos» que apartaron a las religiosas del ideal de la fundadora, a diferencia de los textos legislativos para los Hermanos Menores, que no sufrieron cambios significativos en este aspecto. Otros factores fueron la imposibilidad de salir al mundo tras la limosna y el consecuente requisito de la dote.This article deals with the daily practices of friars and nuns in Santiago, Chile, during the transition from the 18th to the 19th century. Specifically, it compares the observance of the vow of poverty according to the spirituality of the saints of Assisi: Saint Francis and Saint Clare. Through the compilation, analysis and interpretation of conventual sources, we can establish that it was precisely the rule itself and its mitigation that allowed the «excesses» that separated the sisters from the founder’s ideal, whereas the legislative texts for the Friars Minor meant that they did not undergo significant changes in this aspect. Quality of life with pharmacological treatment in patients with benign prostatic enlargement: results from the Evolution European Prospective Multicenter Multi-National Registry Study.
Item does not contain fulltext Background Lower urinary tract symptoms due to benign prostate enlargement (LUTS/BPE) can lead to significant disturbances to health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and psychological well-being. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of pharmacological treatment of LUTS/BPE on disease specific and generic QOL measures. Methods Evolution was a European prospective, multicenter multi-national, observational registry collecting real-life clinical data over 2 years on the management of LUTS/BPE in primary and secondary care. This study investigated disease-specific QOL using questionnaires such as IPSS Q8, BPH Impact Index (BII) and generic QOL using questionnaires like EuroQOL Five Dimension (EQ5D) which encompassed EQ5D VAS and EQ5D health index. Results The registry enrolled 1838 BPE patients and 1246 patients were evaluable at the end of 24 months. Nearly 70% of patients in the study were previously treated with medical therapy and 17% of these had already discontinued medical treatment previously for various reasons with lack of efficacy being the most common. The mean time since diagnosis of LUTS in the previously treated group was 4.7 years (0-26 years). Medical management produced statistically significant improvement in QOL (disease specific and generic) in previously untreated patients and an insignificant change in generic QOL in previously treated patients. Conclusions After 5-years from the onset of symptoms, LUTS/BPE patients previously treated with medication had significantly impaired QOL in patients in a manner comparable to other chronic diseases. Earlier intervention with minimally invasive surgical techniques (MIT) should be considered in LUTS/BPE patients that do not show a significant improvement in QOL with medical therapy
Hedgehog/Gli supports androgen signaling in androgen deprived and androgen independent prostate cancer cells
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Castration resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) develops as a consequence of hormone therapies used to deplete androgens in advanced prostate cancer patients. CRPC cells are able to grow in a low androgen environment and this is associated with anomalous activity of their endogenous androgen receptor (AR) despite the low systemic androgen levels in the patients. Therefore, the reactivated tumor cell androgen signaling pathway is thought to provide a target for control of CRPC. Previously, we reported that Hedgehog (Hh) signaling was conditionally activated by androgen deprivation in androgen sensitive prostate cancer cells and here we studied the potential for cross-talk between Hh and androgen signaling activities in androgen deprived and androgen independent (AI) prostate cancer cells.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Treatment of a variety of androgen-deprived or AI prostate cancer cells with the Hh inhibitor, cyclopamine, resulted in dose-dependent modulation of the expression of genes that are regulated by androgen. The effect of cyclopamine on endogenous androgen-regulated gene expression in androgen deprived and AI prostate cancer cells was consistent with the suppressive effects of cyclopamine on the expression of a reporter gene (luciferase) from two different androgen-dependent promoters. Similarly, reduction of smoothened (Smo) expression with siRNA co-suppressed expression of androgen-inducible KLK2 and KLK3 in androgen deprived cells without affecting the expression of androgen receptor (AR) mRNA or protein. Cyclopamine also prevented the outgrowth of AI cells from androgen growth-dependent parental LNCaP cells and suppressed the growth of an overt AI-LNCaP variant whereas supplemental androgen (R1881) restored growth to the AI cells in the presence of cyclopamine. Conversely, overexpression of Gli1 or Gli2 in LNCaP cells enhanced AR-specific gene expression in the absence of androgen. Overexpressed Gli1/Gli2 also enabled parental LNCaP cells to grow in androgen depleted medium. AR protein co-immunoprecipitates with Gli2 protein from transfected 293T cell lysates.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Collectively, our results indicate that Hh/Gli signaling supports androgen signaling and AI growth in prostate cancer cells in a low androgen environment. The finding that Gli2 co-immunoprecipitates with AR protein suggests that an interaction between these proteins might be the basis for Hedgehog/Gli support of androgen signaling under this condition.</p
Hadron beam test of a scintillating fibre tracker system for elastic scattering and luminosity measurement in ATLAS
A scintillating fibre tracker is proposed to measure elastic proton
scattering at very small angles in the ATLAS experiment at CERN. The tracker
will be located in so-called Roman Pot units at a distance of 240 m on each
side of the ATLAS interaction point. An initial validation of the design
choices was achieved in a beam test at DESY in a relatively low energy electron
beam and using slow off-the-shelf electronics. Here we report on the results
from a second beam test experiment carried out at CERN, where new detector
prototypes were tested in a high energy hadron beam, using the first version of
the custom designed front-end electronics. The results show an adequate
tracking performance under conditions which are similar to the situation at the
LHC. In addition, the alignment method using so-called overlap detectors was
