Anomalies and large N limits in matrix string theory

    Get PDF
We study the loop expansion for the low energy effective action for matrix string theory. For long string configurations we find the result depends on the ordering of limits. Taking gs0g_s\to 0 before NN\to\infty we find free strings. Reversing the order of limits however we find anomalous contributions coming from the large NN limit that invalidate the loop expansion. We then embed the classical instanton solution into a long string configuration. We find the instanton has a loop expansion weighted by fractional powers of NN. Finally we identify the scaling regime for which interacting long string configurations have a well defined large NN limit. The limit corresponds to large "classical" strings and can be identified with the "dual of the 't Hooft limit, gSYM2Ng_{SYM}^2\sim N.Comment: 13 pages, 1 figure, harvmac.tex, notational errors corrected, references added. Trivial error in section 5 corrected with the result that the domain of validity of the loop expn. is slightly modifie

A User-Centered Evaluation of Spanish Text Simplification

We present an evaluation of text simplification (TS) in Spanish for a production system, by means of two corpora focused in both complex-sentence and complex-word identification. We compare the most prevalent Spanish-specific readability scores with neural networks, and show that the latter are consistently better at predicting user preferences regarding TS. As part of our analysis, we find that multilingual models underperform against equivalent Spanish-only models on the same task, yet all models focus too often on spurious statistical features, such as sentence length. We release the corpora in our evaluation to the broader community with the hopes of pushing forward the state-of-the-art in Spanish natural language processing.Comment: Data at https://github.com/microsoft/BrevE-CLar

Detecting variable (V), diversity (D) and joining (J) gene segment recombination using a two-colour fluorescence system

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Diversity of immunoglobulins and the T cell antigen receptors is achieved via the recombination activating gene (RAG)-mediated rearrangement of variable (V), diversity (D) and joining (J) gene segments, and this underpins the efficient recognition of a seemingly limitless array of antigens. Analysis of V(D)J recombination activity is typically performed using extrachromosomal recombination substrates that are recovered from transfected cells and selected using bacterial transformation. We have developed a two-colour fluorescence-based system that simplifies detection of both deletion and inversion joining events mediated by RAG proteins.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>This system employs two fluorescent reporter genes that differentially mark unrearranged substrates and those that have undergone RAG-mediated deletion or inversion events. The recombination products bear the hallmarks of true V(D)J recombination and activity can be detected using fluorescence microscopy or flow cytometry. Recombination events can be detected without the need for cytotoxic selection of recombination products and the system allows analysis of recombination activity using substrates integrated into the genome.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>This system will be useful in the analysis and exploitation of the V(D)J recombination machinery and suggests that similar approaches could be used to replace expression of one gene with another during lymphocyte development.</p

Fiscal decentralization in the nude: Discursive struggles and the stalling of its implementation in Jamaica

    Get PDF
Despite an apparently promising start, the decentralization of property tax in Jamaica has never really progressed, nor yet been abandoned. Why is this? This paper adopts a discourse theory perspective to answer these questions. It primarily takes cues from a case study of the Portmore Municipality Council, which was tasked by Jamaica’s central government to implement fiscal decentralization. The initiative was intended to pave the way for further local government reforms in the country in line with new public management (NPM) principles, but something different happened. We conclude that several influential signifiers and signifieds were linked with fiscal decentralization. Mobilized in various politically motivated and overlapping discourses, these served different interests and attracted shifting groups of supporters and contenders, and gradually halted fiscal decentralization. The signifiers and signifieds pertained to NPM, participation, local and central government commitment, entrenchment,1 councilors’ lack of skills, nepotism, corruption, and the need for a “fix” for decentralization to progress. They were part of a larger palette of discourses relating to central government power, globalization, and societal and economic progress. The discourses in question made it impossible to abandon fiscal decentralization entirely, because they continued to be in line with the Jamaican political elite’s professed take on NPM, and helped to attract IMF funding

An Evaluation on Large Language Model Outputs: Discourse and Memorization

We present an empirical evaluation of various outputs generated by nine of the most widely-available large language models (LLMs). Our analysis is done with off-the-shelf, readily-available tools. We find a correlation between percentage of memorized text, percentage of unique text, and overall output quality, when measured with respect to output pathologies such as counterfactual and logically-flawed statements, and general failures like not staying on topic. Overall, 80.0% of the outputs evaluated contained memorized data, but outputs containing the most memorized content were also more likely to be considered of high quality. We discuss and evaluate mitigation strategies, showing that, in the models evaluated, the rate of memorized text being output is reduced. We conclude with a discussion on potential implications around what it means to learn, to memorize, and to evaluate quality text.Comment: Preprint. Under revie

U-duality from Matrix Membrane Partition Function

    Get PDF
We analyse supermembrane instantons (fully wrapped supermembranes) by computing the partition function of the three-dimensional supersymmetrical U(N) matrix model under periodic boundary conditions. By mapping the model to a cohomological field theory and considering a mass-deformation of the model, we show that the partition function exactly leads to the U-duality invariant measure factor entering supermembrane instanton sums. On the other hand, a computation based on the quasi-classical assumption gives the non U-duality invariant result of the zero-mode analysis by Pioline et al. This is suggestive of the importance of supermembrane self-interactions and shows a crucial difference from the matrix string case.Comment: harvmac, 16 pages. v2: minor textual changes. version to appear in Physics Letter

    From Supermembrane to Matrix String

We develop a systematic method of directly embedding supermembrane wrapped around a circle into matrix string theory. Our purpose is to study connection between matrix string and membrane from an entirely 11 dimensional point of view. The method does neither rely upon the DLCQ limit nor upon string dualities. In principle, this enables us to construct matrix string theory with arbitrary backgrounds from the corresponding supermembrane theory. As a simplest application of the formalism, the matrix-string action with a 7 brane background (Kaluza-Klein Melvin solution) with nontrivial RR vector field is given.Comment: 36 pages, 1 figur
