A family of dissipative two-dimensional mappings: Chaotic, regular and steady state dynamics investigation

    Get PDF
Abstract Some dynamical properties for a family of two dimensional mappings controlled by three parameters are considered in this paper. For null dissipation and depending on the other control parameters, diffusion in phase space is observed. A connection with the standard mapping is made to determine the range of control parameters leading to unlimited diffusion. In the dissipative case, for low nonlinearity, we obtain the fixed points and an expression to find any periodic orbit with any period, if it exists. For large nonlinearity we investigate the Lyapunov exponents and characterise the steady state of the system for a long time

The L\'evy Map: A two-dimensional nonlinear map characterized by tunable L\'evy flights

Once recognizing that point particles moving inside the extended version of the rippled billiard perform L\'evy flights characterized by a L\'evy-type distribution P()(1+α)P(\ell)\sim \ell^{-(1+\alpha)} with α=1\alpha=1, we derive a generalized two-dimensional non-linear map MαM_\alpha able to produce L\'evy flights described by P()P(\ell) with 0<α<20<\alpha<2. Due to this property, we name MαM_\alpha as the L\'evy Map. Then, by applying Chirikov's overlapping resonance criteria we are able to identify the onset of global chaos as a function of the parameters of the map. With this, we state the conditions under which the L\'evy Map could be used as a L\'evy pseudo-random number generator and, furthermore, confirm its applicability by computing scattering properties of disordered wires.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure

Saddle points and rare collisions under scaling approach in a Fermi accelerator with two nonlinear terms

    Get PDF
Abstract Rare collisions of a classical particle bouncing between two walls are studied. The dynamics is described by a two-dimensional, nonlinear and area-preserving mapping in the variables velocity and time at the instant that the particle collides with the moving wall. The phase space is of mixed type preventing diffusion of the particle to high energy. Successive and therefore rare collisions are shown to have a histogram of frequency which is scaling invariant with respect to the control parameters. The saddle fixed points are studied and shown to be scaling invariant with respect to the control parameters too

Enzymes have important features that may facilitate their application in industrial processes and have been used as alternatives to chemical catalysts. In particular, proteases can be isolated from microorganisms, which provide important sources of advantageous enzymes for industrial processes. For example, Eupenicillium javanicum is a filamentous fungus that has been shown to express industrially applicable enzymes and chemical components, such as antifungal compounds. The biotechnological potential of E. javanicum and proteases made us search a novel protease from this microorganism. The macromolecule was isolated, the main biochemical properties was evaluated, and the specificity of the protease subsites was determined. The protease was produced under solid-state bioprocess with wheat bran and isolated by two chromatography steps with yield of 27.5% and 12.4-fold purification. The molecular mass was estimated at 30 kDa. The N-terminal sequence of the first 20 amino acid residues was AVGAGYNASVALALEKALNN. The enzyme presented higher proteolytic activity at pH 6.0 and 60 degrees C. The protease is stable at wide range of pH values and temperatures and in the presence of surfactants. The primed side of the catalytic site showed the highest catalytic efficiency of the enzyme isolated from E. javanicum. The S'(1) subsite is responsible for catalyzing the protease reaction with substrates with tyrosine in P'(1). These findings provide important insights into the biochemical characterization of a highly active protease from E. javanicum and may facilitate the development of industrial processes involving this protease.Fundacao de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado de Sao Paulo (FAPESP) [2012/24703-8, 2011/06986-0]Univ Sao Paulo, Sch Pharmaceut Sci Ribeirao Preto, Dept Pharmaceut Sci, Ribeirao Preto, BrazilUniv Fed Sao Paulo, Paulista Med Sch, Dept Biophys, Sao Paulo, BrazilUniv Sao Paulo, Sch Pharmaceut Sci Ribeirao Preto, Dept Phys & Chem, Ribeirao Preto, BrazilUniv Fed Sao Paulo, Paulista Med Sch, Dept Biophys, Sao Paulo, BrazilFAPESP: 2012/24703-8FAPESP: 2011/06986-0Web of Scienc

During the rainy season of 2001, the incidence of the dengue vectors Aedes aegypti and Ae. albopictus was examined in different habitats of two cities (Rio de Janeiro and Nova Iguacu) in Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil, and in two cities (Palm Beach and Boca Raton) in Florida. Oviposition trap collections were performed in urban, suburban, and rural habitats in both areas. Our hypothesis that the abundances and frequencies of occurrence of Ae. aegypti and Ae albopictus are affected in opposite ways by increasing urbanization was only partially supported. City, habitat, and their interaction significantly affected the abundance of both species. Cities with high abundance of Ae. aegypti also had a high abundance of Ae. albopictus. The two species were most abundant in the cities of Rio de Janeiro state and the lowest in Boca Raton. Habitat bad a significant but opposite effect on the abundances of Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus. In general, Ae. aegypti was most prevalent in highly urbanized areas and Ae. albopictus in rural, suburban, and vegetated urban areas in Rio de Janeiro state and Florida. However, abundances of the two species were similar in most suburban areas. Analyses of frequencies of occurrence showed an unexpected high level of co-occurrence of both species in the same oviposition trap. Despite the different geographical origins of Ae. albopictus in Brazil and the United States, the habitats used by this recent invader are remarkably similar in the two countries

Chitosan-magnetite nanocomposite as a sensing platform to bendiocarb determination

    Get PDF
A novel platform for carbamate-based pesticide quantification using a chitosan/magnetic iron oxide (Chit-Fe3O4) nanocomposite as a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) modifier is shown for an analytical methodology for determination of bendiocarb (BND). The BND oxidation signal using GCE/Chit-Fe3O4 compared with bare GCE was catalyzed, showing a 37.5% of current increase with the peak potential towards less positive values, showing method's increased sensitivity and selectivity. Using square-wave voltammetry (SWV), calibration curves for BND determination were obtained (n = 3), and calculated detection and quantification limits values were 2.09 × 10-6 mol L-1 (466.99 ppb) and 6.97 × 10-6 mol L-1 (1555.91 ppb), respectively. The proposed electroanalytical methodology was successfully applied for BND quantification in natural raw waters without any sample pretreatment, proving that the GCE/Chit-Fe3O4 modified electrode showed great potential for BND determination in complex samples. ᅟ Graphical abstract. The authors gratefully acknowledge the funding provided by the following Brazilian agencies: CNPq-INCT (proc. 573925/2008-9 and 573548/2008-0), CAPES/Funcap (2133/2012/proc. 23038.007973/2012-90 and PNE-0112-00048.01.00/16), CNPq (proc. 400223/2014-7, 303596/2014-7, 302801/2014-6 and 408790/2016-4), PRONEM/FUNCAP/CNPq (PNE-0112-00048.01.00/16) and PRONEX/Funcap (proc.
