Warehouse manpower planning strategies in times of financial crisis: evidence from logistics service providers and retailers in the Netherlands

    Get PDF
The economic crisis that is experienced in Europe has a large influence on transport and logistics companies. Since turnover typically drops strongly during a crisis, companies try to reduce costs in order to survive. The study reported in this paper has investigated how manpower planning in warehouses has been used to counter effects of the crisis and what the results are of the measures taken. A survey was carried out among warehouses run by retailers and logistics service providers. The results of the survey show that there is a significant relation between a decrease in turnover and the four investigated manpower planning strategies. Furthermore, the study shows that the most effective manpower planning strategies are flexible planning of employees and balancing the workload. Hence, the study concludes that in particular better operational planning is a key strategy to counter the effects of the financial crisis, which is an important insight for the management of warehouses

    A Continuum,O(N) Monte-Carlo algorithm for charged particles

We introduce a Monte-Carlo algorithm for the simulation of charged particles moving in the continuum. Electrostatic interactions are not instantaneous as in conventional approaches, but are mediated by a constrained, diffusing electric field on an interpolating lattice. We discuss the theoretical justifications of the algorithm and show that it efficiently equilibrates model polyelectrolytes and polar fluids. In order to reduce lattice artifacts that arise from the interpolation of charges to the grid we implement a local, dynamic subtraction algorithm. This dynamic scheme is completely general and can also be used with other Coulomb codes, such as multigrid based methods

Estimating nonresponse bias and mode effects in a mixed mode survey

    Get PDF
In mixed-mode surveys, it is difficult to separate sample selection differences from mode-effects that can occur when respondents respond in different interview settings. This paper provides a framework for separating mode-effects from selection effects by matching very similar respondents from different survey modes using propensity score matching. The answer patterns of the matched respondents are subsequently compared. We show that matching can explain differences in nonresponse and coverage in two Internet-samples. When we repeat this procedure for a telephone and Internet-sample however, differences persist between the samples after matching. This indicates the occurrence of mode-effects in telephone and Internet surveys. Mode-effects can be problematic; hence we conclude with a discussion of designs that can be used to explicitly study mode-effects

An empirical analysis of humanitarian warehouse locations

    Get PDF
Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to empirically verify characteristics of current warehouse locations of humanitarian organizations (based on public information) and to relate those to the model developed by Richardson et al. (2016). Design/methodology/approach: This paper is based on desk research. Public data such as (annual) reports and databases are used to empirically verify location characteristics. Findings: A significant portion of our sample co-locates their products at UNHRD premises. This indicates that organizations prefer to cluster warehouse activities, particularly when there is no fee involved for using the warehouse (as is the case in the UNHRD network). We find that the characteristics of the current warehouse locations are aligned with literature on location selection factors. Current location can be characterized by infrastructure characteristics (in particular closeness to airport and safety) and by low occurrence of disasters. Other factors for which we did not find evidence for were labor quality and availability as well as political environment. Research limitations/implications: We have used a limited sample of warehouses. We also focused our research on the countries where two or more organizations have their warehouses located. We did not account for warehouse sizes or product stored in our analysis. Practical implications: The geographic map of the current warehouses together with the quantified location factors provides an overview of current warehouse locations. Originality/value: We empirically verify characteristics of warehouse locations of humanitarian organizations. This differs from other studies that do not provide an empirically grounded perspective

Impact of human activities and livestock on the African environment: An attempt to partition the pressure

    Get PDF
The impact of human endeavours on the environment in the struggle to eke out a living through crop and animal agriculture is examined in a holistic context. Analyses focus on all the sources of pressure that modify the vegetation cover of rural Africa, including the effects of fires and burning of biomass, fuel wood extraction and deforestation and land clearing

Seeing Clearly: A Community-Based Inquiry Into Vision Care Access For a Rural Northern First Nation

    Get PDF
There are a variety of barriers to eye-care service access in rural Northern First Nations communities. Semi-structured, opened-ended key informant interviews were conducted on the topic of eye care, with eight First Nations individuals employed by the health office in a small Northern British Columbian First Nations community. Data analysis comprised identifying themes by analyzing similarities and dissimilarities in participants’ narratives, including comparing and contrasting viewpoints of participants and placing themes within broader sociocultural and historic contexts. Themes identified in the data included the current state of community eye care, facilitators and barriers to accessing eye care, and community needs and preferences. The theme of “facilitators and barriers” was further analyzed, resulting in subthemes of awareness, attitudes, social, economic, and service related. Better understanding of the barriers and their interactions would provide a foundation upon which innovative eye-care programs might be developed

Biolegality: How Biology and Law Redefine Sociality

As an empirical concept, biolegality emerged at the height of biotechnological advances in Euro-American societies when rapid changes in the life sciences (including molecular biology, immunology, and the neurosciences) and their attendant techniques (including reproductive technologies and gene editing) started to challenge ethical norms, legal decisions, and legal forms. As a theoretical concept, biolegality deepens the Foucauldian notion of biopolitics with an operation of legality that emphasizes how biology and its attendant technologies alter legal form, knowledge, practice, and experience. These empirical and theoretical developments affect how we understand sociality. While public discourse remains preoccupied with the call for more regulation mdash thereby underscoring law's lag in its dealings with technology mdash the social science scholarship describes instead how bioscience and biotechnology are fragmenting and rearranging legal knowledge about property, personhood, parenthood, and collective identity. As it opens broader anthropological debates around exchange, self, kinship, and community, the study of biolegality brings a novel currency to the discipline, addressing how biology and law inform new ways of relating and knowing
