Domain wall theory and exchange stiffness in Co/Pd multilayers
The stripe model of domain structure in multilayers is studied by micromagnetic simulation. The results indicate a strong reduction of the effective domain wall energy (by dipolar effects). Domain width measurements on sputtered Co/Pd multilayers are compared with the theory. The estimated exchange stiffness is comparable with that of bulk Co. The effects of interface roughness and of interlayer exchange are discussed
Water scarcity and institutional change: lessons in adaptive governance from the drought experience of Perth, Western Australia
Urban water systems will be increasingly challenged under future climates and global pressures. Meeting challenges by reconfiguring water systems to integrate supplies and deliver multifunctional uses is technically well described. Adjusting the institutions that frame the management of these systems is not well operationalized in practice or conceptualized in theory. This study seeks to address this gap through an institutional analysis of Perth, Australia, a city where drought crisis has put under pressure both management practices and the institutional setting that underlies them. The study found that while trusted practices moderated water scarcity, the stability of the institutional setting may not facilitate a shift toward adaptable institutional configurations suited to future conditions. The results identified three key ingredients for a flexible institutional setting: (i) feedbacks in the system through better information management, (ii) reflexive dialogue and strategic use of projects to generate greater learning opportunities, and (iii) policy level support for sector-wide collaboration through progressive agendas, incentives for innovation and capacity building in stakeholder and community engagement. Further, the results suggest that a deeper understanding of institutional dynamics is needed to enable adaptive governance. A method for mechanical generation of radio frequency fields in nuclear magnetic resonance force microscopy
We present an innovative method for magnetic resonance force microscopy
(MRFM) with ultra-low dissipation, by using the higher modes of the mechanical
detector as radio frequency (rf) source. This method allows MRFM on samples
without the need to be close to an rf source. Furthermore, since rf sources
require currents that give dissipation, our method enables nuclear magnetic
resonance experiments at ultra-low temperatures. Removing the need for an
on-chip rf source is an important step towards a MRFM which can be widely used

The Complexity Landscape of Outcome Determination in Judgment Aggregation
We provide a comprehensive analysis of the computational complexity of the outcome determination problem for the most important aggregation rules proposed in the literature on logic-based judgment aggregation. Judgment aggregation is a powerful and flexible framework for studying problems of collective decision making that has attracted interest in a range of disciplines, including Legal Theory, Philosophy, Economics, Political Science, and Artificial Intelligence. The problem of computing the outcome for a given list of individual judgments to be aggregated into a single collective judgment is the most fundamental algorithmic challenge arising in this context. Our analysis applies to several different variants of the basic framework of judgment aggregation that have been discussed in the literature, as well as to a new framework that encompasses all existing such frameworks in terms of expressive power and representational succinctness.publishedVersio

Extreme value statistics and return intervals in long-range correlated uniform deviates
We study extremal statistics and return intervals in stationary long-range
correlated sequences for which the underlying probability density function is
bounded and uniform. The extremal statistics we consider e.g., maximum relative
to minimum are such that the reference point from which the maximum is measured
is itself a random quantity. We analytically calculate the limiting
distributions for independent and identically distributed random variables, and
use these as a reference point for correlated cases. The distributions are
different from that of the maximum itself i.e., a Weibull distribution,
reflecting the fact that the distribution of the reference point either
dominates over or convolves with the distribution of the maximum. The
functional form of the limiting distributions is unaffected by correlations,
although the convergence is slower. We show that our findings can be directly
generalized to a wide class of stochastic processes. We also analyze return
interval distributions, and compare them to recent conjectures of their
functional form
