    Structure of 13^{13}Be probed via secondary beam reactions

    The low-lying level structure of the unbound neutron-rich nucleus 13^{13}Be has been investigated via breakup on a carbon target of secondary beams of 14,15^{14,15}B at 35 MeV/nucleon. The coincident detection of the beam velocity 12^{12}Be fragments and neutrons permitted the invariant mass of the 12^{12}Be+nn and 12^{12}Be+nn+nn systems to be reconstructed. In the case of the breakup of 15^{15}B, a very narrow structure at threshold was observed in the 12^{12}Be+nn channel. Contrary to earlier stable beam fragmentation studies which identified this as a strongly interacting ss-wave virtual state in 13^{13}Be, analysis here of the 12^{12}Be+nn+nn events demonstrated that this was an artifact resulting from the sequential-decay of the 14^{14}Be(2+^+) state. Single-proton removal from 14^{14}B was found to populate a broad low-lying structure some 0.70 MeV above the neutron-decay threshold in addition to a less prominent feature at around 2.4 MeV. Based on the selectivity of the reaction and a comparison with (0-3)ω\hbar\omega shell-model calculations, the low-lying structure is concluded to most probably arise from closely spaced Jπ^\pi=1/2+^+ and 5/2+^+ resonances (Er_r=0.40±\pm0.03 and 0.850.11+0.15^{+0.15}_{-0.11} MeV), whilst the broad higher-lying feature is a second 5/2+^+ level (Er_r=2.35±\pm0.14 MeV). Taken in conjunction with earlier studies, it would appear that the lowest 1/2+^+ and 1/2^- levels lie relatively close together below 1 MeV.Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures, 2 tables.     Trend and spatial analysis of prostate cancer mortality in the state of Sergipe, Brazil

    This is an ecological study with exploratory analysis of spatial and temporal data based on mortality data with respect to prostate cancer obtained from the Mortality Information System concerning residents of the state of Sergipe, Brazil between 2000 and 2015. The analysis of temporal trends was performed using the Joinpoint Regression Program through Poisson regression. Spatial analysis was performed using the empirical Bayesian model, Kernel analysis, Global Moran and Local indices. There were 1,986 deaths due to prostate cancer, most of which occurring after 60 years of age. An increasing, non-constant but significant trend in mortality rates was noted. The kernel density estimator showed hotspot densities of the highest rates of prostate cancer mortality in the north-eastern and central regions of the state. High-risk clusters were identified for prostate cancer mortality (I = 0.55, P<0.01). There was an increase in prostate cancer mortality rates and a heterogeneous geographic distribution of risk areas, with high-risk priority areas identified in certain regions of the state. These priority areas include the municipalities located in the Northeast (Amparo do São Francisco, Aquidabã, Canhoba, Cedro de São João and Telha), the West (Frei Paulo and Pedra Mole) and the south-western region of the state (Poço Verde and Simão Dias)

    Humankind has entered a new era of space exploration: settlements on other planetary bodies are foreseen in the near future. Advanced technologies are being developed to support the adaptation to extraterrestrial environments and, with a view on the longer term, to support the viability of an independent economy. Biological processes will likely play a key role and lead to the production of life-support consumables, and other commodities, in a way that is cheaper and more sustainable than exclusively abiotic processes. Microbial communities could be used to sustain the crews’ health as well as for the production of consumables, for waste recycling, and for biomining. They can self-renew with little resources from Earth, be highly productive on a per-volume basis, and be highly versatile—all of which will be critical in planetary outposts. Well-de!ned, semi-open, and stress-resistant microecosystems are particularly promising. An instance of it is kombucha, known worldwide as a microbial association that produces an eponymous, widespread soft drink that could be valuable for sustaining crews’ health or as a synbiotic (i.e., probiotic and prebiotic) after a rational assemblage of de!ned probiotic bacteria and yeasts with endemic or engineered cellulose producers. Bacterial cellulose products offer a wide spectrum of possible functions, from leather-like to innovative smart materials during long-term missions and future activities in extraterrestrial settlements. Cellulose production by kombucha is zero-waste and could be linked to bioregenerative life support system (BLSS) loops. Another advantage of kombucha lies in its ability to mobilize inorganic ions from rocks, which may help feed BLSS from local resources. Besides outlining those applications and others, we discuss needs for knowledge and other obstacles, among which is the biosafety of microbial producers
