The Hodge numbers of O'Grady 10 via Ngô strings
We determine the Hodge numbers of the hyper-Kähler manifold known as O'Grady 10 by studying some related modular Lagrangian fibrations by means of Nĝo strings, which we introduce via a refinement of the Ngô Support Theorem
A support theorem for\break the Hitchin fibration: The case of GLnand KC
We compute the supports of the perverse cohomology sheaves of the Hitchin fibration for GLn{\mathrm{GL}_{n}} over the locus of reduced spectral curves. In contrast to the case of meromorphic Higgs fields we find additional supports at the loci of reducible spectral curves. Their contribution to the global cohomology is governed by a finite twist of Hitchin fibrations for Levi subgroups. The corresponding summands give non-trivial contributions to the cohomology of the moduli spaces for every n≥2{n\geq{2}}. A key ingredient is a restriction result for intersection cohomology sheaves that allows us to compare the fibration to the one defined over versal deformations of spectral curves
The current progress of the ALICE Ring Imaging Cherenkov Detector
Recently, the last two modules (out of seven) of the ALICE High Momentum
Particle Identification detector (HMPID) were assembled and tested. The full
detector, after a pre-commissioning phase, has been installed in the
experimental area, inside the ALICE solenoid, at the end of September 2006. In
this paper we review the status of the ALICE/HMPID project and we present a
summary of the series production of the CsI photo-cathodes. We describe the key
features of the production procedure which ensures high quality photo-cathodes
as well as the results of the quality assessment performed by means of a
specially developed 2D scanner system able to produce a detailed map of the CsI
photo-current over the entire photo-cathode surface.
Finally we present our recent R&D efforts toward the development of a novel
generation of imaging Cherenkov detectors with the aim to identify, in heavy
ions collisions, hadrons up to 30 GeV/c.Comment: Presented at the Imaging-2006 Conference, Stockholm, Sweden, June

Effective strategies for promoting physical activity through the use of digital media among school-age children: A systematic review
Digital media are widespread among school-age children, and their incorrect use may lead to an increase in sedentary levels and the consequences associated with it. There are still few studies that have investigated whether physical activity levels could be increased through their use. The aim of this study was to systematically review the scientific literature in order to identify whether digital strategies and technologies are capable of increasing the level of physical activity. A literature search was performed using the following databases: Pubmed, Scopus, and Web of Science. The main outcomes evaluated the increase in physical activity levels, the number of steps, and the reduction of sedentary behaviors. Two trained researchers independently assessed eligible studies against eligibility criteria, extracted data, and assessed the risk of bias. The Downs and Black checklist was used to assess the quality of the included studies. A total of 15 studies (1122 children) were included in this systematic review, with a mean age of 8.45 ± 0.70 years. Quality assessment of the studies observed a “moderate quality” of the included records. The results of this systematic review highlight that digital media can be applied as a way to improve the levels of physical activity in children to contrast a sedentary lifestyle. The main limitations of the study are the heterogeneity within the exercise protocols and the paucity of studies involving school-age children. More research is needed to confirm our findings also due to continuing technological progress
Large-scale implementation of a new TDR-based system for the monitoring of pipe leaks
In this paper, the practical implementation of an innovative time domain reflectometry (TDR)-based system for leak detection in underground water pipes is presented. This system, which had been previously developed and experimented on pilot plants, has now been installed (for the first time) on a large scale, in 10 km of pipes. The present work describes all the practical aspects and technical details (from the design to the functional tests), related to the implementation of the system
The Integrated HV, LV and Liquid Radiator Control System for the HMPID in the ALICE Experiment at LHC
The complexity and the underground location of the new generation experiments (ALICE, ATLAS, CMS and LHCb) at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) requires a reliable and user friendly control system to operate such large detectors remotely. Control system experts at CERN are deeply involved in developing the JCOP (Joint Controls Project) 'Framework', a software running in the PVSSII SCADA1 (Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition) system, that will provide a homogeneous and ready to use tool for the control system developers of the LHC experiments. The High Momentum Particle Identification Detector (HMPID), one of the ALICE2 sub-detectors, is being equipped with a Detector Control System (DCS) developed within the JCOP Framework. In this paper the basic features and the first results of the DCS prototype are presented
Results from the ageing studies of large CsI photocathodes exposed to ionizing radiation in a gaseous RICH detector
We studied the ageing of large CsI photocathodes induced by ionizing particles (90Sr) by correlating the integrated charge dose of the ionic avalanches hitting the photocathode to the local changes of the Quantum Efficiency (QE). The drop of the QE of the irradiated CsI spots is reported as a function of the charge dose. It was found that the ageing process continues even in absence of irradiation
The use of compression stockings for venous disorders in Brazil
Objective: the aim of this study was to analyse the medical indication and the use of elastic compression stockings, and to assess patient adherence to treatment in different regions of Brazil.Method: the prescription and clinical indication of elastic stockings were evaluated in a prospective, descriptive, cross-sectional, multicentre study for a population of private patients. in 2009, 3414 patients from 123 treatment centres in southern, south-eastern and north-eastern Brazil were evaluated using a questionnaire. the following variables were analysed: sociodemographic (gender, age, occupation and education), lifestyle (physical activity and time spent standing); classification of venous disease (CEAP [clinical, aetiological, anatomical and pathophysiological] classification - clinical criteria), indications for prescription, consumer behaviour (strength, acquisition and use of stockings) and criteria of satisfaction (improvement, duration of use, adherence). the effects of compression therapy were assessed at a follow-up visit approximately 30 days after starting treatment with the following items being assessed: complaints about pain, discomfort, burning sensation and oedema of the leg while using elastic stockings. Multivariate analysis was used to compare data with an alpha error of 5% (P value < 0.05) being considered acceptable. Results: the average age increased with the severity of chronic venous insufficiency; the main indications used by physicians were leg pain and discomfort; 89.3% of patients bought stockings and thus started treatment with more than 90% of these reporting improvements in symptoms. Conclusion: Elastic stockings are available to the Brazilian population, look acceptable at the time of purchase and provide good results; however, some limitations regarding their use need to be addressed.Univ Estadual Campinas, UNICAMP, Serv Peripheral Vasc Dis, Campinas, BrazilMed Sch Sao Jose do Rio Preto FAMERP, Dept Cardiol & Cardiovasc Surg, Sao Jose do Rio Preto, BrazilUniversidade Federal de São Paulo, UNIFESP, Discipline Vasc Surg, São Paulo, BrazilUniversidade Federal de São Paulo, UNIFESP, Discipline Vasc Surg, São Paulo, BrazilWeb of Scienc
Production technique and quality evaluation of CsI photocathodes for the ALICE/HMPID detector
Abstract The ALICE/HMPID detector has been equipped with 42 large area CsI photocathodes providing a total of 11 m 2 of photosensitive area for the detection of Cherenkov light. This production summary reports on the CsI coating procedure and provides results of the quality monitoring measurements by means of a photocurrent scanner system. The importance of the heat enhancement of CsI PCs is stressed and difficulties due to variations in this process are presented, followed by a discussion of possible influences of production parameters on this process
