    Inhibition of photosystem II activities in soybean (Glycine max) genotypes differing in chilling sensitivity

    AbstractDue to chilling sensitivity, minimum night temperatures represent the main constraint in soybean production in South Africa. In vivo quantification of photosystem II (PSII) function by direct chlorophyll fluorescence revealed that dark chilling (8°) inhibited PSII function in the extreme chill sensitive genotype, Java 29 (JAs) mainly by deactivating reaction centers and inhibiting the conversion of excitation energy to electron transport and electron transfer from reduced plastoquinone to the PSI end electron acceptors. Further analysis of the normalized fast fluorescence transients, revealed that in JAs, upon dark chilling, disengagement of the oxygen evolution complex (ΔVK band) occurred which coincided with a concomitant decrease in O2 evolution measured in vitro. The chilling resistant Maple Arrow (MAr), though one night cold stress lead to a decrease in fluorescence emission at 2ms (−ΔVJ band) indicating a decrease in the QA− concentration due to cold-induced slow-down of electron donation from P680, however showed clear signs of recovery after the second and third cold nights. The moderate chill sensitive genotype, Fiskeby V (FBm) responded in a fashion intermediate to above-mentioned extremes. A second experiment showed that in JAs the inhibitory effect increased with increasing time of exposure to light following dark chilling. Our data demonstrated that significant differences exist in the cold tolerance of different soybean genotypes: (a) In respect to activity criteria, expressed by the quantum yields for primary photochemistry φPo=TRo/ABS, for electron transport from photosystem II to photosystem I as φEo=ETo/ABS and the efficiency, φRo=REo/ABS, to reduce the end electron acceptors of photosystem I up to NADP; (b) In respect to stability criteria, dependent on structure and conformation, such as the capability of energetic cooperativity (grouping) among photosynthetic units quantified by the grouping probability for exciton movements within the energetically connected group of entire photosynthetic units. Therefore analyzing the O-J-I-P fluorescence transient according to the JIP-test offers a practical and sensitive in vivo screening test for dark chilling tolerance in soybean

    Channel frequency response for a low voltage indoor cable up to 1GHz

    Abstract: The Channel Frequency Response (CFR) is essential in the understanding and specification of Power Line Communications (PLC) equipment. In this paper a 10m indoor low voltage Flat Twin and Earth power cable is characterized up to 1GHz. This is higher in frequency than existing PLC specifications. This is done because the effect of frequencies in the upper VHF and lower UHF bands on PLC is largely unknown. Measurements and simulation are used to show that at higher frequencies, the traditional transmission line models of wave propagation on a power line are no longer valid. Classic attenuation models do not predict the correct CFR above typically 250MHz for a 10m cable. This effect is explained in terms of electromagnetic radiation from the cable. After 500MHz it is speculated that the line becomes a waveguide. These transmission modes have important implications for UHF PLC, either directly (connected cable) or when used in contactless mode where the power line is used as antenna

    First Observation and Measurement of the Decay K+- -> pi+- e+ e- gamma

    Using the full data set of the NA48/2 experiment, the decay K+- -> pi+- e+ e- gamma is observed for the first time, selecting 120 candidates with 7.3 +- 1.7 estimated background events. With K+- -> pi+- pi0D as normalisation channel, the branching ratio is determined in a model-independent way to be Br(K+- -> pi+- e+ e- gamma, m_eegamma > 260 MeV/c^2) = (1.19 +- 0.12_stat +- 0.04_syst) x 10^-8. This measured value and the spectrum of the e+ e- gamma invariant mass allow a comparison with predictions of Chiral Perturbation Theory.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures.     Empirical parameterization of the K+- -> pi+- pi0 pi0 decay Dalitz plot

    As first observed by the NA48/2 experiment at the CERN SPS, the \p0p0 invariant mass (M00) distribution from \kcnn decay shows a cusp-like anomaly at M00=2m+, where m+ is the charged pion mass. An analysis to extract the pi pi scattering lengths in the isospin I=0 and I=2 states, a0 and a2, respectively, has been recently reported. In the present work the Dalitz plot of this decay is fitted to a new empirical parameterization suitable for practical purposes, such as Monte Carlo simulations of K+- -> pi+- pi0 pi0 decays.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures

    The NA48 experiment at CERN has performed a new measurement of direct CP violation, based on data taken in 1997 by simultaneously collecting K_L and K_S decays into pi0pi0 and pi+pi-.     Search for direct CP-violation in K+- --> pi+-pi0pi0 decays

    A search for direct CP-violation in K+- --> pi+-pi0pi0 decays based on 47.14 million events has been performed by the NA48/2 experiment at the CERN SPS. The asymmetry in the Dalitz plot linear slopes A_g=(g^+ - g^-)/(g^+ + g^-) is measured to be A_g=(1.8 +- 2.6).10^{-4}. The design of the experiment and the method of analysis provide good control of instrumental charge asymmetries in this measurement. The precision of the result is limited by statistics and is almost one order of magnitude better than that of previous measurements by other experiments.Comment: 14 page

    An Integrated TCGA Pan-Cancer Clinical Data Resource to Drive High-Quality Survival Outcome Analytics

    For a decade, The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) program collected clinicopathologic annotation data along with multi-platform molecular profiles of more than 11,000 human tumors across 33 different cancer types. TCGA clinical data contain key features representing the democratized nature of the data collection process. To ensure proper use of this large clinical dataset associated with genomic features, we developed a standardized dataset named the TCGA Pan-Cancer Clinical Data Resource (TCGA-CDR), which includes four major clinical outcome endpoints. In addition to detailing major challenges and statistical limitations encountered during the effort of integrating the acquired clinical data, we present a summary that includes endpoint usage recommendations for each cancer type. These TCGA-CDR findings appear to be consistent with cancer genomics studies independent of the TCGA effort and provide opportunities for investigating cancer biology using clinical correlates at an unprecedented scale. Analysis of clinicopathologic annotations for over 11,000 cancer patients in the TCGA program leads to the generation of TCGA Clinical Data Resource, which provides recommendations of clinical outcome endpoint usage for 33 cancer types

    Postoperative complications after procedure for prolapsed hemorrhoids (PPH) and stapled transanal rectal resection (STARR) procedures

    Procedure for prolapsing hemorrhoids (PPH) and stapled transanal rectal resection for obstructed defecation (STARR) carry low postoperative pain, but may be followed by unusual and severe postoperative complications. This review deals with the pathogenesis, prevention and treatment of adverse events that may occasionally be life threatening. PPH and STARR carry the expected morbidity following anorectal surgery, such as bleeding, strictures and fecal incontinence. Complications that are particular to these stapled procedures are rectovaginal fistula, chronic proctalgia, total rectal obliteration, rectal wall hematoma and perforation with pelvic sepsis often requiring a diverting stoma. A higher complication rate and worse results are expected after PPH for fourth-degree piles. Enterocele and anismus are contraindications to PPH and STARR and both operations should be used with caution in patients with weak sphincters. In conclusion, complications after PPH and STARR are not infrequent and may be difficult to manage. However, if performed in selected cases by skilled specialists aware of the risks and associated diseases, some complications may be prevented

    Measurement of the Dalitz plot slope parameters of the K±π±π+πK^\pm\to\pi^\pm\pi^+\pi^- decay

    The distribution of the K±π±π+πK^\pm\to\pi^\pm\pi^+\pi^- decays in the Dalitz plot has been measured by the NA48/2 experiment at the CERN SPS with a sample of 4.71×1084.71\times 10^8 fully reconstructed events. With the standard Particle Data Group parameterization the following values of the slope parameters were obtained: g=(21.134±0.017)%g=(-21.134\pm0.017)\%, h=(1.848±0.040)%h=(1.848\pm0.040)\%, k=(0.463±0.014)%k=(-0.463\pm0.014)\%. The quality and statistical accuracy of the data have allowed an improvement in precision by more than an order of magnitude, and are such as to warrant a more elaborate theoretical treatment, including pion-pion rescattering, which is in preparation.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures.
