    Automatic Face Recognition System Based on Local Fourier-Bessel Features

    We present an automatic face verification system inspired by known properties of biological systems. In the proposed algorithm the whole image is converted from the spatial to polar frequency domain by a Fourier-Bessel Transform (FBT). Using the whole image is compared to the case where only face image regions (local analysis) are considered. The resulting representations are embedded in a dissimilarity space, where each image is represented by its distance to all the other images, and a Pseudo-Fisher discriminator is built. Verification test results on the FERET database showed that the local-based algorithm outperforms the global-FBT version. The local-FBT algorithm performed as state-of-the-art methods under different testing conditions, indicating that the proposed system is highly robust for expression, age, and illumination variations. We also evaluated the performance of the proposed system under strong occlusion conditions and found that it is highly robust for up to 50% of face occlusion. Finally, we automated completely the verification system by implementing face and eye detection algorithms.     Structural anomalies for a three dimensional isotropic core-softened potential

    Using molecular dynamics simulations we investigate the structure of a system of particles interacting through a continuous core-softened interparticle potential. We found for the translational order parameter, t, a local maximum at a density ρt−max\rho_{t-max} and a local minimum at ρt−min>ρt−max\rho_{t-min} > \rho_{t-max}. Between ρt−max\rho_{t-max} and ρt−min\rho_{t-min}, the tt parameter anomalously decreases upon pressure. For the orientational order parameter, Q6Q_6, was observed a maximum at a density ρt−max<ρQmax<ρt−min\rho_{t-max}< \rho_{Qmax} < \rho_{t-min}. For densities between ρQmax\rho_{Qmax} and ρt−min\rho_{t-min}, both the translational (t) and orientational (Q6Q_6) order parameters have anomalous behavior. We know that this system also exhibits density and diffusion anomaly. We found that the region in the pressure-temperature phase-diagram of the structural anomaly englobes the region of the diffusion anomaly that is larger than the region limited by the temperature of maximum density. This cascade of anomalies (structural, dynamic and thermodynamic) for our model has the same hierarchy of that one observed for the SPC/E water.Comment: 19 pages, 8 figure

    Expectations For an Interferometric Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Effect Survey for Galaxy Clusters

    Non-targeted surveys for galaxy clusters using the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect (SZE) will yield valuable information on both cosmology and evolution of the intra-cluster medium (ICM). The redshift distribution of detected clusters will constrain cosmology, while the properties of the discovered clusters will be important for studies of the ICM and galaxy formation. Estimating survey yields requires a detailed model for both cluster properties and the survey strategy. We address this by making mock observations of galaxy clusters in cosmological hydrodynamical simulations. The mock observatory consists of an interferometric array of ten 2.5 m diameter telescopes, operating at a central frequency of 30 GHz with a bandwidth of 8 GHz. We find that clusters with a mass above 2.5×1014h50−1M⊙2.5 \times 10^{14} h_{50}^{-1} M_\odot will be detected at any redshift, with the exact limit showing a very modest redshift dependence. Using a Press-Schechter prescription for evolving the number densities of clusters with redshift, we determine that such a survey should find hundreds of galaxy clusters per year, many at high redshifts and relatively low mass -- an important regime uniquely accessible to SZE surveys.     Diffusion Enhancement in Core-softened fluid confined in nanotubes

    We study the effect of confinement in the dynamical behavior of a core-softened fluid. The fluid is modeled as a two length scales potential. This potential in the bulk reproduces the anomalous behavior observed in the density and in the diffusion of liquid water. A series of NpTNpT Molecular Dynamics simulations for this two length scales fluid confined in a nanotube were performed. We obtain that the diffusion coefficient increases with the increase of the nanotube radius for wide channels as expected for normal fluids. However, for narrow channels, the confinement shows an enhancement in the diffusion coefficient when the nanotube radius decreases.     Interplay between structure and density anomaly for an isotropic core-softened ramp-like potential

    Using molecular dynamics simulations and integral equations we investigate the structure, the thermodynamics and the dynamics of a system of particles interacting through a continuous core- softened ramp-like interparticle potential. We found density, dynamic and structural anomalies similar to that found in water. Analysis of the radial distribution function for several temperatures at fixed densities show a pattern that may be related to the origin of density anomaly.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figure
