A method for Sampling Bernoulli Variables

We introduce new method for generating correlated or uncorrelated Bernoulli random variables by using the binary expansion of a continuous random variable with support on the unit interval. We show that when this variable has a symmetric probability density function around 12 , its binary expansion provides equiprobable bits over {0, 1}. In addition we prove that when the random variable is uniformly distributed over [0, 1], its binary expansion generates independent Bernoulli random variables. Moreover, we give examples where, by choosing some parameterized nonuniform probability density functions over [0, 1], samples of Bernoulli variables with specific correlation values are generated.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figure

Distributional Transform Based Information Reconciliation

In this paper we present an information reconciliation protocol designed for Continuous-Variable QKD using the Distributional Transform. By combining tools from copula and information theories, we present a method for extracting independent symmetric Bernoulli bits for Gaussian modulated CVQKD protocols, which we called the Distributional Transform Expansion (DTE). POLÍTICA FISCAL, NÍVEL TECNOLÓGICO E CRESCIMENTO ECONÔMICO NO BRASIL: TEORIA E EVIDÊNCIA EMPÍRICA

The objective of this paper is to analyze the impact of changes in fiscal policy and in technological level over the growth economic rate in Brazil, as well as, to identify the optimal level of taxation of the economy empirically, based on the model' version of endogenous growth proposed by Barro (1990). To capture the dynamic interactions among the variables, we decided to use a vectorial auto regressive model (VAR) for the econometrics analysis, with annual data from 1951 to 2000. The main empirical results indicate that: i) shocks in the ratio public/private capital, tax burden and technological level generate cyclical effects on the GDP growth rate in Brazil; ii) the tax burden, used to finance the public expenses, it causes negative impact on the growth rate of the Brazilian economy when it surpasses the optimal level of 25% of the GDP.

A ciência como um jogo em Popper

The aim of the present paper is to analyze the conception of science of Popper resorting to the metaphor with the game of chess that he uses in his work The logic of scientific research. We consider that by means of this metaphor it is possible to perceive that its conception of science is not reduced to the logical criterion of falsifiability as many of its critics let us envisage, nor even to define methodological rules to guide the practice of science. But the philosopher himself in establishing such analogy makes it clear the existence os rules is what science has in common with the game of chess. In our view, these rules, as well as the scientific criterion, are not sufficient to define the scientific practice, since it involves other elements such as: values, objectives, scientific community and context in which the research is carried out. Popper assumes these elements in his metaphor, but does not make them explicit. It is only in later works such as Conjectures and Refutations and The Open Society and Its Enemies that they are clearly defined. We, therefore, intend to bring to light those elements involved in the game of science in Popper in order to give greater clarity to his conception of what science is.O objetivo do presente trabalho é analisar a concepção de ciência de Popper recorrendo metáfora com o jogo de xadrez que ele utiliza em sua obra A lógica da pesquisa cientifica. Consideramos que por meio desta metáfora é possível percebermos que a sua concepção de ciência não se reduz ao critério lógico de falseabilidade como muitos de seus comentadores deixam entrever, nem tampouco, em definir regras metodológicas para nortear a prática da ciência. Mas, o próprio filósofo ao estabelecer tal analogia deixa claro que a ciência tem em comum com o jogo de xadrez, a existência de regras. No nosso entender essas regras, assim como o critério de cientificidade, não são suficientes para definir a prática cientifica, pois esta envolve outros elementos como: valores, objetivos, comunidade cientifica e o contexto no qual as pesquisas são realizadas. Popper pressupõe esses elementos em sua metáfora, mas não os deixa explícitos. É somente em obras posteriores, como Conjecturas e refutações e Sociedade aberta e seus inimigos que eles são claramente definidos. Pretendemos assim, trazer a tona esses elementos envolvidos no jogo da ciência em Popper de modo a dar maior clareza a sua concepção

Procuramos mostrar que o falibilismo e o conjecturalismo defendido por Popper é fruto das leituras que ele fez das obras de Einstein. Muito embora Einstein tenha antecipado muitas das idéias do filósofo austríaco, foi ele quem deu unidade, fundamento e consistência a essas ideias esboçadas de forma fragmentada nos textos de Einstein

Ciência e ética em Popper: a ética da responsabilidade dos cientistas

The present paper aims to analyze the relationship between science and ethics in Popper, more precisely, the nature of that ethics that is at the base of his theory of science. Our intention is to show that their conception of science is founded and an ethics of responsibility, which presupposes the autonomy of scientists, their freedom of choice, which makes them responsible for their decisions by certain research “standards”. We will show that this ethics of responsibility is already present in its research logic, in a less explicit way, when his concerns are focused on the problem of scientific demarcation and his proposal for a criterion of scientificity and a methodology for science. The adoption of such a proposal requires scientists to make a decision that involves goals and values. In writings, in which he expresses his concerns about ethical issues inherent in science, this ethics of responsibility is clearly presented when defining certain commitments for scientists based on the Hippocratic oath, as well as the ethical principles that should guide their research.  O presente trabalho tem por objetivo analisar as relações entre ciência e ética em Popper, mais precisamente, a natureza dessa ética que está na base de sua teoria da ciência. Nossa pretensão é evidenciar que sua concepção de ciência está alicerçada em uma ética da responsabilidade, que pressupõe a autonomia dos cientistas, sua liberdade de escolha, o que os torna responsáveis por suas decisões por determinados “padrões” de pesquisa. Iremos mostrar que essa ética da responsabilidade já se faz presente em sua lógica da investigação, de forma pouco explicita, quando suas preocupações estão voltadas para o problema da demarcação científica e sua proposta de um critério de cientificidade e de uma metodologia para a ciência. A adoção de tal proposta requer dos cientistas uma decisão que envolve objetivos e valores. Em escritos, nos quais expressa suas preocupações com questões éticas inerentes a ciência, essa ética da responsabilidade se apresenta de forma nítida ao definir certos compromissos para os cientistas tendo por base o juramento de Hipócrates, bem como os princípios éticos que devem nortear suas pesquisas.   &nbsp

O "FUNDAMENTO" DOS DIREITOS HUMANOS: ELEMENTOS PARA UMA CRÍTICA À POSIÇÃO DE NORBERTO BOBBIO

A presente pesquisa tem por tema o problema do fundamento dos direitos humanos no pensamento de Norberto Bobbio. Apresenta-se, o mais fielmente possível, a posição do Papa Laico em relação ao sentido desse problema, sobre a sua possibilidade e sobre a não-desejabilidade de um fundamento absoluto para os “históricos” direitos humanos. Tem por objetivo geral analisar criticamente a posição bobbiana sobre o problema do fundamento dos direitos humanos, esboçando uma proposta de solução do problema a partir de uma concepção ôntico-teleológica da Dignidade humana. Para apresentar as posições de Bobbio sobre o problema aqui proposto, vale-se principalmente da coletânea de escritos originais de Bobbio sobre os direitos humanos intitulada L’età dei diritti, 1990. Conclui-se que a pergunta sobre o fundamento metafísico do “Direito Humano” por excelência é a pergunta sobre o fundamento da Dignidade inalienável de cada indivíduo humano: por que o indivíduo humano tem um peculiar valor? Essa Dignidade absoluta deve, necessariamente, ter um fundamento igualmente absoluto: a humanitas vivens da qual todo indivíduo humano participa: ela é absoluta porque é supralocal e supratemporal e não depende das circunstâncias nas quais se dá, porém, revela-se na História e na Cultura humana, local e temporalmente conhecida, em constante devir

Extrema derecha en Brasil: Análisis de sus ideas y de sus partidarios tras la dictadura militar

We aim to analyze the political ideology of the government of President Bolsonaro, more specifically to verify the paradigm shift represented by the change of a model of the “right wingers shame” after the military dictatorship in Brazil that led to the election of an openly right-wing candidate. In such research, we will study how this new political and social scenario was produced, in which is shared even in many parts of the world, as well as what its central ideas are, from ideologues such as Olavo de Carvalho, and how its supporters carried out such a paradigm shift based on different cultural references with different internal and international social supports.Objetivamos analizar la ideología política del gobierno del Presidente Bolsonaro, más específicamente verificar el cambio de paradigma representado por la mudanza de un modelo de la “derecha avergonzada” tras la dictadura militar en Brasil que llevó a la elección de un candidato abiertamente de derecha. En tal investigación, estudiaremos cómo se produjo ese nuevo escenario político y social, que es compartido incluso en muchas partes de mundo, bien como cuáles son sus ideas centrales, a partir de ideólogos como Olavo de Carvalho, y cómo sus partidarios realizaron tal cambio de paradigma a partir de diferentes referencias culturales con distintos apoyos sociales internos e internacionales

Avaliação e otimização da produção de álcool anidro em destilarias brasileiras

There is considerable industrial interest in increasing profit margins in alcohol distilleries. This interest stems from the large number of industrial columns in operation (which use a lot of energy) and the potential for developing separation methods. Regarding this need, distilleries see as an option the optimization of the process, obtaining second generation ethanol, cogeneration of electric energy, among others, in order to minimize energy consumption. This work is part of the first case, optimizing a process of production of anhydrous ethanol by azeotropic distillation with the use of cyclohexane as the third component in the energy expenditure of the plant. This simulation was performed using the software COCO employing the NRTL model to calculate the binary interaction parameters. After converging the simulation, a sensibility analysis of the decanter was carried out, relative to the temperature, and soon afterwards an optimization of the energy expenditure of the plant.UFU - Universidade Federal de UberlândiaTrabalho de Conclusão de Curso (Graduação)Existe um interesse industrial considerável em aumentar as margens de lucro em destilarias de álcool. Esse interesse deriva-se do grande número de colunas industriais em operação (as quais utilizam bastante energia) e do potencial de desenvolvimento de métodos de separação. Acerca dessa necessidade, as destilarias veem como opção a otimização do processo, obtenção do etanol de segunda geração, cogeração de energia elétrica, entre outras, de modo a minimizar o consumo de energia. Esse trabalho se insere no primeiro caso, otimizando um processo de produção de etanol anidro por meio da destilação azeotrópica com a utilização do ciclohexano como terceiro componente no que se refere ao gasto energético da planta. Essa simulação foi realizada no software COCO e utilizando o modelo NRTL para o cálculo dos parâmetros de interação binária. Após convergida a simulação foi efetuado uma análise de sensibilidade do decantador, em relação à temperatura, e logo em seguida uma otimização do gasto energético da planta
