Torsion and Gravitation: A new view

According to the teleparallel equivalent of general relativity, curvature and torsion are two equivalent ways of describing the same gravitational field. Despite equivalent, however, they act differently: whereas curvature yields a geometric description, in which the concept of gravitational force is absent, torsion acts as a true gravitational force, quite similar to the Lorentz force of electrodynamics. As a consequence, the right-hand side of a spinless-particle equation of motion (which would represent a gravitational force) is always zero in the geometric description, but not in the teleparallel case. This means essentially that the gravitational coupling prescription can be minimal only in the geometric case. Relying on this property, a new gravitational coupling prescription in the presence of curvature and torsion is proposed. It is constructed in such a way to preserve the equivalence between curvature and torsion, and its basic property is to be equivalent with the usual coupling prescription of general relativity. According to this view, no new physics is connected with torsion, which appears as a mere alternative to curvature in the description of gravitation. An application of this formulation to the equations of motion of both a spinless and a spinning particle is madeComment: To appear on IJMP

High power impulse magnetron sputtering discharges: Instabilities and plasma self-organization

    Get PDF
We report on instabilities in high power impulse magnetron sputtering plasmas which are likely to be of the generalized drift wave type. They are characterized by well defined regions of high and low plasma emissivity along the racetrack of the magnetron and cause periodic shifts in floating potential. The azimuthal mode number m depends on plasma current, plasma density, and gas pressure. The structures rotate in × direction at velocities of ∼10 km s−1 and frequencies up to 200 kHz. Collisions with residual gas atoms slow down the rotating wave, whereas increasing ionization degree of the gas and plasma conductivity speeds it up

Detection of Non-Technical Losses in Smart Distribution Networks: a Review

    Get PDF
With the advent of smart grids, distribution utilities have initiated a large deployment of smart meters on the premises of the consumers. The enormous amount of data obtained from the consumers and communicated to the utility give new perspectives and possibilities for various analytics-based applications. In this paper the current smart metering-based energy-theft detection schemes are reviewed and discussed according to two main distinctive categories: A) system statebased, and B) arti cial intelligence-based.Comisión Europea FP7-PEOPLE-2013-IT

An experimental investigation of the influence of inter-turbine spacing on the loads and performance of a co-planar tidal turbine fence

    Get PDF
Multi-rotor tidal turbine systems offer engineering benefits through shared infrastructure and improved opportunities for maintenance. Additionally, the ability to specify accurately the inter-turbine spacing in co-planar arrays allows rotors to be designed and deployed to benefit from the constructive interference effects available from neighbouring rotors. In this work we consider the effect of inter-turbine spacing and control of this spacing for a fence of turbines in low overall levels of global blockage (4.5%). We conduct experiments in a towing tank using two tidal turbine models that were previously designed to benefit from constructive interference effects at high local blockage, i.e. close inter-turbine spacing. The turbines were towed in a side-by-side configuration by suspending them from above. By making use of the tank’s side wall to act as a symmetry plane we were able to emulate a fence of four laterally arrayed turbines. As indicated by theory, decreasing inter-turbine spacing is shown to have a positive effect on fence performance. By reducing the inter-turbine spacing from one diameter to a quarter of a diameter, we observe an overall 1.4% performance increase, which is driven by a 2.8% increase in the inboard turbine’s power coefficient. This research is a first attempt to quantify constructive interference effects for a four turbine fence; the methods and results will be used to instruct further studies to aid the development of such multi-rotor tidal turbine systems

    Recommending audio mixing workflows

    Get PDF
This paper describes our work on Audio Advisor, a workflow recommender for audio mixing. We examine the process of eliciting, formalising and modelling the domain knowledge and expert’s experience. We are also describing the effects and problems associated with the knowledge formalisation processes. We decided to employ structured case-based reasoning using the myCBR 3 to capture the vagueness encountered in the audio domain. We detail on how we used extensive similarity measure modelling to counter the vagueness associated with the attempt to formalise knowledge about and descriptors of emotions. To improve usability we added GATE to process natural language queries within Audio Advisor. We demonstrate the use of the Audio Advisor software prototype and provide a first evaluation of the performance and quality of recommendations of Audio Advisor
