Operant measurement of auditory threshold in prelingually deaf users of cochlear implants: II

Two experiments evaluated an operant procedure for establishing stimulus control using auditory and electrical stimuli as a baseline for measuring the electrical current threshold of electrodes implanted in the cochlea. Twenty-one prelingually deaf children, users of cochlear implants, learned a Go/No Go auditory discrimination task (i.e., pressing a button in the presence of the stimulus but not in its absence). When the simple discrimination baseline became stable, the electrical current was manipulated in descending and ascending series according to an adapted staircase method. Thresholds were determined for three electrodes, one in each location in the cochlea (basal, medial, and apical). Stimulus control was maintained within a certain range of decreasing electrical current but was eventually disrupted. Increasing the current recovered stimulus control, thus allowing the determination of a range of electrical currents that could be defined as the threshold. The present study demonstrated the feasibility of the operant procedure combined with a psychophysical method for threshold assessment, thus contributing to the routine fitting and maintenance of cochlear implants within the limitations of a hospital setting.FAPESPConselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)CNP

Limiares auditivos de crianças surdas pré-linguais usuárias de implante coclear foram avaliados com estimulação elétrica em um dos eletrodos mediais. A avaliação empregou um procedimento operante do tipo go/no go para ensinar uma discriminação simples, evidenciada por uma resposta motora, entre presença e ausência do estímulo auditivo. Estabelecida a linha de base, a manipulação na intensidade do estímulo foi implementada de acordo com o método psicofísico de escada modificado, começando por uma seqüência descendente. Os sete participantes do estudo mostraram perda da precisão no responder sob controle do estímulo quando a intensidade diminuía além de um certo valor e a precisão era recuperada quando a intensidade era novamente aumentada, o que permitiu a identificação de limiares individuais. Os resultados sugerem que o método psicofísico combinado com o procedimento operante pode ser uma alternativa viável para avaliar limiar auditivo de pessoas sem linguagem em situação clínica de regulagem do implante coclear.Auditory thresholds of prelingually deaf children who received cochlear implants were evaluated for the electrical stimulation to one of the medial electrodes. A go/no go operant procedure was used to teach a simple discrimination, indicated by a motor response, between the presence versus the absence of an auditory stimulus. Simple discrimination was used as a baseline upon which the electrical stimulus's intensity was manipulated in a decreasing sequence followed by an increasing sequence, according to a modified psychophysical staircase method. The accuracy of responding in the presence of the electrical stimulus was reduced for all seven participants when the stimulus intensity decreased bellow a certain value and was recovered when the stimulus intensity was increased to the previous level. The experimental design allowed reliable identification of individual thresholds. Ácido giberélico no crescimento inicial de mudas de pessegueiro.

O emprego de certas práticas culturais são fundamentais para obtenção de mudas de qualidade, com reduzido período de formação. Realizou-se, este trabalho, em casa de vegetação, no Departamento de Fitotecnia da Universidade Federal de Viçosa, com o objetivo de avaliar o efeito de cinco concentrações de ácido giberélico (GA3) (0; 50; 100; 150 e 200 mg L-1), no crescimento inicial do pessegueiro. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi em blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições, considerando-se como unidade experimental, os quatro recipientes plásticos contendo uma planta cada. Foram realizadas três aplicações de GA3 (60, 80 e 100 dias de cultivo). Nas aplicações, a parte aérea foi molhada inteiramente, utilizando-se 20 ml de solução para cada planta. Aos 130 dias da semeadura, foram analisados: comprimento da parte aérea e da raiz; diâmetro do caule; número de brotações primárias; massa da matéria seca da parte aérea e da raiz. Concluiu-se que o ácido giberélico exerceu efeito sobre o crescimento de pessegueiro, recomendando-se a pulverização de 200 mg L-1. As pulverizações de GA3 não tiveram efeito sobre o diâmetro do caule do pessegueiro

Efeito da pré-embebição das sementes e do substrato na germinação e no desenvolvimento inicial do maracujazeiro-doce.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito da pré-embebição das sementes em água e do tipo de substrato na germinação e no desenvolvimento inicial do maracujazeiro-doce (P. alata Curtis). O trabalho foi realizado no Departamento de Fitotecnia, da Universidade Federal de Viçosa (MG). As sementes foram extraídas de frutos maduros, e somente uma porção foi embebida em água destilada, durante 24 horas. Posteriormente, no interior da casa de vegetação, as sementes foram semeadas em caixas plásticas, utilizando-se quatro substratos (areia; Plantmax?; torta de filtro e a mistura Plantmax + areia + torta de filtro (1:1:1 v/v). Foi utilizado o delineamento experimental em blocos casualizados, num fatorial 2 x 4 (pré-embebição x substrato), com quatro repetições, considerando como unidade experimental cada 50 sementes. Aos 33 dias após a semeadura, foram analisados: porcentagem de germinação e de sobrevivência das plântulas; número de folhas; comprimento total e comprimento de raiz das plântulas; índice de velocidade de emergência; e massa da matéria seca total das plântulas. Concluiu-se que a embebição das sementes em água não interferiu na germinação do maracujazeiro-doce. Em geral, obtiveram-se os maiores resultados nas variáveis analisadas quando se utilizou o substrato comercial Plantmax, sendo seu uso recomendado para formação de plântulas de maracujazeiro-doce

Uma abordagem usando redes neurais artificiais para resolução de problemas de otimização restrita

Systems based on artificial neural networks have high computational rates due to the use of a massive number of simple processing elements and the high degree of connectivity between these elements. Neural networks with feedback connections provide a computing model capable of solving a large class of optimization problems. This paper presents a novel approach for solving constrained optimization problems using artificial neural networks. More specifically, a modified Hopfield network is developed and its internal parameters are computed using the valid-subspace technique. These parameters guarantee the convergence of the network to the equilibrium points, which represent the feasible solutions to problem. Simulated examples are presented to demonstrate the validity of the proposed method.Sistemas baseados em redes neurais artificiais fornecem altas taxas de computação devido ao uso de um número massivo de elementos processadores simples. Redes neurais com conexões realimentadas fornecem um modelo computacional capaz de resolver uma rica classe de problemas de otimização. Este artigo apresenta uma nova abordagem para resolver problemas de otimização restrita utilizando redes neurais artificiais. Mais especificamente, uma rede de Hopfield modificada é desenvolvida cujos parâmetros internos são calculados usando a técnica de subespaço válido de soluções. A partir da obtenção destes parâmetros a rede tende a convergir aos pontos de equilíbrio que representam as possíveis soluções para o problema. Exemplos de simulação são apresentados para justificar a validade da abordagem proposta.28530

Incoherent electronic band states in Mn substituted BaFe2_{2}As2_{2}

Chemical substitution is commonly used to explore new ground states in materials, yet the role of disorder is often overlooked. In Mn-substituted BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ (MnBFA), superconductivity (SC) is absent, despite being observed for nominal hole-doped phases. Instead, a glassy magnetic phase emerges, associated with the $S=5/2$ Mn local spins. In this work, we present a comprehensive investigation of the electronic structure of MnBFA using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). We find that Mn causes electron pockets to shrink, disrupting the nesting condition in MnBFA. Notably, we propose that electronic disorder, along with magnetic scattering, primarily contributes to suppressing the itinerant magnetic order in MnBFA. This finding connects the MnBFA electronic band structure properties to the glassy magnetic behavior observed in these materials and suggests that SC is absent because of the collective magnetic impurity behavior that scatters the Fe-derived excitations. Moreover, we suggest that Mn tunes MnBFA to a phase in between the correlated metal in BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ and the Hund insulator phase in BaMn$_{2}$As$_{2}$.Comment: main 7 pages, 3 figures + supp 5 pages, 5 figure

Oxidation of olefins with H₂O₂ catalyzed by gallium(III) nitrate and aluminum(III) nitrate in solution

Soluble gallium and aluminum nitrates (simple salts of non-transition metals) are good catalysts for the epoxidation of olefins (cyclooctene, dec-1-ene) including terpenes (carvone, limonene) with hydrogen peroxide in ethyl acetate or tetrahydrofurane (THF). Typically, the gallium salt is more efficient in comparison with the aluminum derivative. Products are formed in yields up to 93%, turnover numbers (TONs) attained 40. Addition of trifluoroacetic acid or pyrazine-2-carboxylic acid (PCA) accelerates the reaction and improves the yield. Short-range interactions in a two-electron system: energy levels and magnetic properties

The problem of two electrons in a square billiard interacting via a finite-range repulsive Yukawa potential and subjected to a constant magnetic field is considered. We compute the energy spectrum for both singlet and triplet states, and for all symmetry classes, as a function of the strength and range of the interaction and of the magnetic field. We show that the short-range nature of the potential suppresses the formation of ``Wigner molecule'' states for the ground state, even in the strong interaction limit. The magnetic susceptibility $\chi(B)$ shows low-temperature paramagnetic peaks due to exchange induced singlet-triplet oscillations. The position, number and intensity of these peaks depend on the range and strength of the interaction. The contribution of the interaction to the susceptibility displays paramagnetic and diamagnetic phases as a function of $T$.Comment: 12 pages,6 figures; to appear in Phys. Rev.
