    Evolutionary Dynamics of Globalization

    Get PDF
The expansion of markets –globalization– was reversed during early 20th century and unfettered markets gave in to the welfare state and central planning. But the markets have been striking back since the early 1980s. Governments are withdrawn from economic activities, and many structural market reforms are implemented. Now the question is: Can the forces that market expansion create again reverse this expansion? This paper seeks an answer to this question by constructing an evolutionary game theoretical framework in which market and “egalitarian” societies appear as evolutionarily stable states and shows that catastrophic events such as the Great Depression can indeed cause switch over between evolutionarily stable states.globalization, evolutionary game theory, evolutionarily stable states, behavioural strategies

The Crisis and After: There Is No Alternative?

The present paper devises an account of the possibilities that the recent crisis opens up for capitalism, which dwells upon its history. The paper takes three propositions as its starting point: First, capitalism, which must solve the problem of coordination of the decisions of different agents in changing environment, is prone to periodic and structural crises because of its very institutional structure. Second, thus, crises should be seen as signs that indicate that economic and social institutional matrix is at fault, which requires new “solutions”. Third, an appropriate account of capitalism must also take into account that crises usually require transformation almost the entire economic and socio-political institutional structure of the system. Having said this, we try to address briefly to possible and likely transformation.Capitalism, Crisis, Institutional transformation

Of all the Syrian refugees who had to immigrate to Turkey due to the war in their country, it has been children who have suffered most. Child refugees were confronted with serious education problems, in particular through the early years of the immigration. In the following years, when it was realized that these children would stay for a long time in the country, an educational policy paving the way for these children to have an education in their own language and in state schools was developed. Following this, the Syrian children who started to have education in state schools had serious problems stemming from the differences in the system of education and culture. According to the body of literature, the problems determined were teacher attitudes, approaches of school administrations and communication problems with peers, and these problems caused a delay in the integration of these children into education. Adaptation of refugee groups to the society they live in is vital, in particular, to the country hosting them. Many studies have shown that education is a major factor for someone to improve their skills and knowledge as well as learn about the cultural values of the society they live in. Interactions of the Syrian child refugees residing in Turkey with their teachers and peers in the context of education was examined from the Syrian Children’s points of view in determining the problems they are confronted with. The study is an applied field study and a qualitative one conducted at Başakşehir, Şahintepe and Güvercintepe Refugee Houses (Sites), in April and May 2019. Members of the sampling frame were 79 people from 25 families and snowball sampling method was employed. In determining the levels of Syrian child refugees’ interactions with their teachers and peers in the context of education, only the data collected from the members of the sampling frame attending state schools were used. The findings from the study reveal, regarding the current state of the Syrian children attending state schools, that in terms of their interactions with teachers and peers, there are sometimes problems but in general terms they are in good state

This thesis analyzes the factors that are associated with separation behavior among United States Air Force pilots. Additionally, the effect of commissioning source on separation was analyzed. Logistic regression models were estimated for U.S. Air Force pilots commissioned between 1994 and 2006. Data records utilized in this thesis were obtained from Defense Manpower Data Center (DMDC). Demographics and professional/educational factors were included in the models to analyze their effects on the separation decision. By identifying the determinants of separation, the thesis attempts to suggest ways in which decision makers might reduce losses among Air Force pilots.http://archive.org/details/annalysisofusair109455362Turkish Air Force authorsApproved for public release; distribution is unlimited

Utilization of Media as a Tool for Marginalization: Foreign Bride Game Show Example

Media, which is one of the primary sources of meaning schemas in a society, paves the way for establishing different social maps with the statements offered. Television is one of the most efficient fields, where social group members are subject to classification as “ours” and “others”. Television is not an environment, where images flow and echo only, but it is a tool, where individuals construct their identities, define themselves and reflect their fears, dreams and wishes related to others. In this study1, a foreign bride game show, which was broadcasted live and where the program aimed to add an individual outside of Turkey with different language, religion and culture to a traditional Turkish family, is examined on the basis of critical statement analysis. It is seen on the program that we define and construct our own identity on television screen with Turkish men, Turkish customs, and foreign girls’ statements. Also, the language used in the program, the stressed words, the places shown, organized activities, the behaviors put forward showed that a clear marginalization strategy is being made

: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships among the preservice science teachers’ proenvironmental behaviours, environmental identity, and ecocentric and anthropocentric attitudes toward environment. A total of 576 (407 females and 169 males) preservice science teachers enrolling in five public universities’ education faculties in Eastern and South-eastern Anatolian Region of Turkey were administered a questionnaire regarding the variables. Convenience sampling method was chosen to constitute the sample of this study. In order to analyse the data collected, descriptive statistics and path analysis as inferential statistics were utilized. According to the results of the study, preservice science teachers held moderate level of favourable environmental behaviours, had strong environmental identity, and possessed high level of ecocentric and moderate level of anthropocentric attitudes toward environment. Moreover, environmental identity directly and strongly predicted the preservice science teachers’ proenvironmental behaviours. The findings revealed that environmental identity plays a crucial role in predicting proenvironmental behaviours

Coronary stent thrombosis is a rare event leading to ST segment elevation myocardial infarction and death. Although early thrombosis of drug-eluting and bare metal stents is relatively frequent, simultaneous thrombosis of bare metal coronary stents has rarely been reported. Here, we present a case of simultaneous subacute thrombosis of two bare metal stents in different coronary arteries early after clopidogrel cessation
