Scanning the future of entrepreneurship: a scenario analysis for The Netherlands

Verkenning van de mogelijkheden om het aantal zelfstandige ondernemingen te verklaren via een empirisch model. Met een dergelijk model kunnen tevens scenario’s gemaakt worden voor de toekomstige ontwikkeling van het aantal ondernemingen in Nederland. Enkele modellen worden stap voor stap opgebouwd. Het model dat gebruikt wordt voor de scenarioanalyse verklaart het aantal ondernemingen, toe- en uittreding uit economische en demografische variabelen en de afwijking van het veronderstelde evenwichtsniveau van het aantal ondernemingen. Dit evenwichtsniveau voor Nederland volgt uit een andere EIM-studie 'Business Ownership and Economic Growth: An Empirical Investigation' (bestelnummer H9809) waarbij gegevens uit 23 OESO-landen gebruikt zijn. De modellen laten zien dat de spectaculaire stijging van het aantal ondernemers in het afgelopen decennium in Nederland mede toegeschreven kan worden aan een inhaalslag op de achterstand die Nederland had ten opzichte van het veronderstelde evenwichtsniveau. Voor de nabije toekomst wordt een verdere stijging van het percentage ondernemers in de beroepsbevolking verwacht, maar deze groei zal minder sterk zijn dan in het recente verleden. In het model is - naast het afgenomen effect van de inhaalslag - ook de vergrijzing een belangrijke oorzaak van deze afnemende groei.

Modelling Business Ownership in the Netherlands

Beschrijving van een empirisch model ter verklaring van het aantal zelfstandige ondernemingen in Nederland. Een dergelijk model voorziet in het maken van scenario’s gemaakt voor de toekomstige ontwikkeling van het aantal ondernemingen in Nederland. Het model onderscheidt effecten op lange en korte termijn en besteedt expliciet aandacht aan turbulentie (gemeten als de som van bedrijfstoetredingen en -beëindigingen) van de markt. Hierbij wordt gebruikgemaakt van econometrische tijdserietechnieken. Het aantal ondernemingen en het aantal toe- en uittredingen worden zodoende verklaard uit economische en demografische variabelen. Naast de invloeden van deze variabelen tendeert het aantal ondernemingen naar een evenwichtsniveau, dat geschat is voor de lange termijn.

Changes in social security legislation: impact on SME behaviour

In deze studie is gekeken naar de samenhang in gedragsverandering bij werkgevers in het MKB en de aanpassing van de wetgeving m.b.t. de arbeidsongeschiktheid van werknemers. Uit het onderzoek komt naar voren dat er, door de financiële prikkels die zijn voortgekomen uit de nieuwe wetgeving, drie soorten werkgevers zijn ontstaan: 1. de preventieve werkgevers, 2. de curatieve werkgevers en 3. de defensieve werkgevers. Verder wordt bekeken welke veranderingen in de sociale wetgeving hebben plaatsgevonden.

Investor Sentiment and Employment

__Abstract__ We find that investor sentiment should affect a firm's employment policy in a world with moral hazard and noise traders. Consistent with the model's predictions, we show that higher sentiment among US investors leads to: (1) higher employment growth worldwide; (2) lower labor productivity, as the growth in employment is not matched by real value added growth; and (3) positive wage growth in countries with a greater proportion of high-skill labor, but negative wage growth otherwise. We also find evidence that sentiment induces greater labor instability during financial crises, which sheds new light on the view that financial development has a "dark side". Overall, the results suggest that sentiment has real effects, especially in countries that attract more foreign direct investments from the US and that are perceived as more popular among US investors

An empirical examination of heterogeneity and switching in foreign exchange markets

In order to study the expectation formation of financial institutions in the foreign exchange market we develop and apply a recursive selection and estimation algorithm to a dataset of surveyed foreign exchange market expectations. Responses are classified into two groups and forecasting models are endogenously determined within the groups. Estimation results reveal that a fundamentalist-chartist model is capable of explaining a large portion of foreign exchange market expectations. Fundamentalists are found to have mean-reverting expectations whereas chartists have contrarian expectations. Allowing panelists to switch between models significantly improves the fit of the model, especially at the relatively shorter forecast horizons. We find that the fundamentalist model is increasingly used as the forecast horizon extends. Finally, results indicate that model choice is based on a combination of period-specific and individual-specific determinants

Collaborative stewardship in multifunctional landscapes: Toward relational, pluralistic approaches

Landscape stewardship offers a means to put social-ecological approaches to stewardship into practice. The growing interest in landscape stewardship has led to a focus on multistakeholder collaboration. Although there is a significant body of literature on collaborative management and governance of natural resources, the particular challenges posed by multifunctional landscapes, in which there are often contested interests, require closer attention. We present a case study from South Africa to investigate how collaborative stewardship can be fostered in contested multifunctional landscapes. We conducted this research through an engaged transdisciplinary research partnership in which we integrated social-ecological practitioner and academic knowledge to gain an in-depth understanding of the challenges of fostering collaboration. We identified five overarching factors that influence collaboration: contextual, institutional, social-relational, individual, and political-historical. Collaborative stewardship approaches focused on the development of formal governance institutions appear to be most successful if enabling individual and social-relational conditions are in place. Our case study, characterized by high social diversity, inequity, and contestation, suggests that consensus-driven approaches to collaboration are unlikely to result in equitable and sustainable landscape stewardship in such contexts. We therefore suggest an approach that focuses on enhancing individual and social-relational enablers. Moreover, we propose a bottom-up patchwork approach to collaborative stewardship premised on the notion of pluralism. This would focus on building new interpersonal relationships and collaborative capacity through small collective actions. Taking a relational, pluralistic approach to fostering collaborative stewardship is particularly important in contested, socially heterogeneous landscapes. Drawing on our study and the literature, we propose guiding principles for implementing relational, pluralistic approaches to collaborative stewardship and suggest future research directions for supporting such approaches

Behavioural Real Estate

The behavioural approach to decision making under uncertainty combines insights from psychology and sociology into economic decision making. It steps away from the normative homo economicus and introduces a positive approach to human decision making under uncertainty. We provide an overview of the main themes in the behavioural real estate literature from the perspective of different market participants. It can be concluded that there seems to be general agreement that behavioural studies can help explain the inefficiency of real estate markets, but a large component of behavioural decision making in the property markets seems to be undiscovered

Quantum characterization of superconducting photon counters

We address the quantum characterization of photon counters based on transition-edge sensors (TESs) and present the first experimental tomography of the positive operator-valued measure (POVM) of a TES. We provide the reliable tomographic reconstruction of the POVM elements up to 11 detected photons and M=100 incoming photons, demonstrating that it is a linear detector.Comment: 3 figures, NJP (to appear
