A low-luminosity type-1 QSO sample; III. Optical spectroscopic properties and activity classification
We report on the optical spectroscopic analysis of a sample of 99
low-luminosity quasi-stellar objects (LLQSOs) at base the
Hamburg/ESO QSO survey (HES). The LLQSOs presented here offer the possibility
of studying the faint end of the QSO population at smaller cosmological
distances and, therefore, in greater detail. A small number of our LLQSO
present no broad component. Two sources show double broad components, whereas
six comply with the classic NLS1 requirements. As expected in NLR of broad line
AGNs, the [S{\sc{ii}}]based electron density values range between 100 and
1000 N/cm. Using the optical characteristics of Populations A and
B, we find that 50\% of our sources with H broad emission are consistent
with the radio-quiet sources definition. The remaining sources could be
interpreted as low-luminosity radio-loud quasar. The BPT-based classification
renders an AGN/Seyfert activity between 50 to 60\%. For the remaining sources,
the possible star burst contribution might control the LINER and HII
classification. Finally, we discuss the aperture effect as responsible for the
differences found between data sets, although variability in the BLR could play

Line and Continuum Variability in Active Galaxies
We compared optical spectroscopic and photometric data for 18 AGN galaxies
over 2 to 3 epochs, with time intervals of typically 5 to 10 years. We used the
Multi-Object Double Spectrograph (MODS) at the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT)
and compared the spectra to data taken from the SDSS database and the
literature. We find variations in the forbidden oxygen lines as well as in the
hydrogen recombination lines of these sources. For 4 of the sources we find
that, within the calibration uncertainties, the variations in continuum and
line spectra of the sources are very small. We argue that it is mainly the
difference in black hole mass between the samples that is responsible for the
different degree of continuum variability. In addition we find that for an
otherwise constant accretion rate the total line variability (dominated by the
narrow line contributions) reverberates the continuum variability with a
dependency . Since
this dependency is prominently expressed in the narrow line emission it implies
that the luminosity dominating part of the narrow line region must be very
compact with a size of the order of at least 10 light years. A comparison to
literature data shows that these findings describe the variability
characteristics of a total of 61 broad and narrow line sources.Comment: 30 pages including the appendix, 18 figures including the appendix.

Comparison of freezing tolerance, compatible solutes and polyamines in geographically diverse collections of Thellungiella sp. and Arabidopsis thaliana accessions
Background: Thellungiella has been proposed as an extremophile alternative to Arabidopsis to investigate environmental stress tolerance. However, Arabidopsis accessions show large natural variation in their freezing tolerance and here the tolerance ranges of collections of accessions in the two species were compared. Results: Leaf freezing tolerance of 16 Thellungiella accessions was assessed with an electrolyte leakage assay before and after 14 days of cold acclimation at 4 degrees C. Soluble sugars (glucose, fructose, sucrose, raffinose) and free polyamines (putrescine, spermidine, spermine) were quantified by HPLC, proline photometrically. The ranges in nonacclimated freezing tolerance completely overlapped between Arabidopsis and Thellungiella. After cold acclimation, some Thellungiella accessions were more freezing tolerant than any Arabidopsis accessions. Acclimated freezing tolerance was correlated with sucrose levels in both species, but raffinose accumulation was lower in Thellungiella and only correlated with freezing tolerance in Arabidopsis. The reverse was true for leaf proline contents. Polyamine levels were generally similar between the species. Only spermine content was higher in nonacclimated Thellungiella plants, but decreased during acclimation and was negatively correlated with freezing tolerance. Conclusion: Thellungiella is not an extremophile with regard to freezing tolerance, but some accessions significantly expand the range present in Arabidopsis. The effect of vascular changes on the photoplethysmographic signal at different hand elevations
In order to further understand the contribution of venous and arterial effects to the photoplethysmographic (PPG) signal, recordings were made from twenty healthy volunteer subjects during an exercise in which the right hand was raised and lowered with reference to heart level. Red (R) and infrared (IR) PPG signals were obtained from the right index finger using a custom-made PPG processing system. Laser Doppler flowmetry (LDF) signals were also recorded from an adjacent fingertip. The signals were compared with simultaneous PPG signals obtained from the left index finger. On lowering the hand to 50 cm below heart level, both ac and dc PPG amplitudes from the finger decreased (e.g. 18.70% and 63.15% decrease in infrared dc and ac signals respectively). The decrease in dc amplitude most likely corresponded to increased venous volume, while the decrease in ac PPG amplitude was due to regulatory adjustments on the arterial side in response to venous distension. Conversely, ac and dc PPG amplitudes increased on raising the arm above heart level. Morphological changes in the ac PPG signal are thought to be due to vascular resistance changes, predominately venous, as the hand position is changed
Integral field near-infrared spectroscopy of II Zw 40
We present integral field spectroscopy in the near-infrared of the nearby
starburst galaxy IIZw40. Our new observations provide an unprecedented detailed
view of the interstellar medium and star formation of this galaxy. The
radiation emitted by the galaxy is dominated by a giant HII region, which
extends over an area of more than 400 pc in size. A few clusters are present in
this area, however one in particular appears to be the main source of ionizing
photons. We derive the properties of this object and compare them with those of
the 30 Doradus cluster in the Large magellanic cloud (LMC). We study the
spatial distribution and velocity field of different components of the
inetrstellar medium (ISM), mostly through the Bracket series lines, the
molecular hydrogen spectrum, and [FeII]. We find that [FeII] and H2 are mostly
photon excited, but while the region emitting [FeII] is almost coincident with
the giant HII region observed in the lines of atomic H and He, the H2 has a
quite different distribution in space and velocity. The age of the stellar
population in the main cluster is such that no supernova (SN) should be present
yet so that the gas kinematics must be dominated by the young stars. We do not
see, in the starbursting region, any geometrical or dynamical structure that
can be related to the large scale morphology of the galaxy.Comment: Accepted for publication on A&
Dissecting Rice Polyamine Metabolism under Controlled Long-Term Drought Stress
A selection of 21 rice cultivars (Oryza sativa L. ssp. indica and japonica) was characterized under moderate long-term drought stress by comprehensive physiological analyses and determination of the contents of polyamines and selected metabolites directly related to polyamine metabolism. To investigate the potential regulation of polyamine biosynthesis at the transcriptional level, the expression of 21 genes encoding enzymes involved in these pathways were analyzed by qRT-PCR. Analysis of the genomic loci revealed that 11 of these genes were located in drought-related QTL regions, in agreement with a proposed role of polyamine metabolism in rice drought tolerance. The cultivars differed widely in their drought tolerance and parameters such as biomass and photosynthetic quantum yield were significantly affected by drought treatment. Under optimal irrigation free putrescine was the predominant polyamine followed by free spermidine and spermine. When exposed to drought putrescine levels decreased markedly and spermine became predominant in all cultivars. There were no correlations between polyamine contents and drought tolerance. GC-MS analysis revealed drought-induced changes of the levels of ornithine/arginine (substrate), substrates of polyamine synthesis, proline, product of a competing pathway and GABA, a potential degradation product. Gene expression analysis indicated that ADC-dependent polyamine biosynthesis responded much more strongly to drought than the ODC-dependent pathway. Nevertheless the fold change in transcript abundance of ODC1 under drought stress was linearly correlated with the drought tolerance of the cultivars. Combining metabolite and gene expression data, we propose a model of the coordinate adjustment of polyamine biosynthesis for the accumulation of spermine under drought conditions
Aerobic Exercise during Pregnancy and Presence of Fetal-Maternal Heart Rate Synchronization
It has been shown that short-term direct interaction between maternal and fetal heart rates may take place and that this interaction is affected by the rate of maternal respiration. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of maternal aerobic exercise during pregnancy on the occurrence of fetal-maternal heart rate synchronization.In 40 pregnant women at the 36th week of gestation, 21 of whom exercised regularly, we acquired 18 min. RR interval time series obtained simultaneously in the mothers and their fetuses from magnetocardiographic recordings. The time series of the two groups were examined with respect to their heart rate variability, the maternal respiratory rate and the presence of synchronization epochs as determined on the basis of synchrograms. Surrogate data were used to assess whether the occurrence of synchronization was due to chance.In the original data, we found synchronization occurred less often in pregnancies in which the mothers had exercised regularly. These subjects also displayed higher combined fetal-maternal heart rate variability and lower maternal respiratory rates. Analysis of the surrogate data showed shorter epochs of synchronization and a lack of the phase coordination found between maternal and fetal beat timing in the original data.The results suggest that fetal-maternal heart rate coupling is present but generally weak. Maternal exercise has a damping effect on its occurrence, most likely due to an increase in beat-to-beat differences, higher vagal tone and slower breathing rates
Down-regulation of the myo-inositol oxygenase gene family has no effect on cell wall composition in Arabidopsis
The enzyme myo-inositol oxygenase (MIOX; E.C. 1.13.99.1) catalyzes the ring-opening four-electron oxidation of myo-inositol into glucuronic acid, which is subsequently activated to UDP-glucuronic acid (UDP-GlcA) and serves as a precursor for plant cell wall polysaccharides. Starting from single T-DNA insertion lines in different MIOX-genes a quadruple knockdown (miox1/2/4/5-mutant) was obtained by crossing, which exhibits greater than 90% down-regulation of all four functional MIOX genes. Miox1/2/4/5-mutant shows no visible phenotype and produces viable pollen. The alternative pathway to UDP-glucuronic acid via UDP-glucose is upregulated in the miox1/2/4/5-mutant as a compensatory mechanism. Miox1/2/4/5-mutant is impaired in the utilization of myo-inositol for seedling growth. The incorporation of myo-inositol derived sugars into cell walls is strongly (>90%) inhibited. Instead, myo-inositol and metabolites produced from myo-inositol such as galactinol accumulate in the miox1/2/4/5-mutant. The increase in galactinol and raffinose family oligosaccharides does not enhance stress tolerance. The ascorbic acid levels are the same in mutant and wild type plants
