    Quantum coherence and carriers mobility in organic semiconductors

    We present a model of charge transport in organic molecular semiconductors based on the effects of lattice fluctuations on the quantum coherence of the electronic state of the charge carrier. Thermal intermolecular phonons and librations tend to localize pure coherent states and to assist the motion of less coherent ones. Decoherence is thus the primary mechanism by which conduction occurs. It is driven by the coupling of the carrier to the molecular lattice through polarization and transfer integral fluctuations as described by the hamiltonian of Gosar and Choi. Localization effects in the quantum coherent regime are modeled via the Anderson hamiltonian with correlated diagonal and non-diagonal disorder leading to the determination of the carrier localization length. This length defines the coherent extension of the ground state and determines, in turn, the diffusion range in the incoherent regime and thus the mobility. The transfer integral disorder of Troisi and Orlandi can also be incorporated. This model, based on the idea of decoherence, allowed us to predict the value and temperature dependence of the carrier mobility in prototypical organic semiconductors that are in qualitative accord with experiments

    Counterion effects in cyanine heterojunction photovoltaic devices

    We investigated cyanine heterojunction photovoltaic devices using carbocyanine dyes as donors and buckminsterfullerene (C60) as acceptor. In particular, we focused on the influence of cyanine counterions on the photovoltaic device characteristics. It was found that counterions can be displaced in the applied electric field and give rise to important hystereses in the current-voltage characteristics, which are related to charge injection processes at electrode and organic heterointerfaces. Mobile counterions have also a drastic effect on the photocurrent spectrum and are responsible for an important C60 contribution at the organic heterojunction between cyanine and C60. If the counterion is covalently linked to the cyanine dye, the C60 contribution in the blue spectral domain can not be observe

    A focus group study for the design of a web-based tool for improving problem-solving in older adults

    The development of easily accessible and usable social and cognitive enhancement trainings is becoming a priority to reduce the impact of aging on quality of life. Since most activities of daily living (e.g., making a meal) require problem-solving skills, problem-solving interventions could be used to improve and/or maintain functional abilities in aging to prolong independence. To design an effective problem-solving training and increase older adults' adherence to the training, this study examined older adults' perceptions of their challenges in activities of daily living, their skills and difficulties in using information technology (IT), and their motivations and expectations for participating in a web-based problem-solving training activity. Four focus groups (two in Italy and two in the Netherlands) were conducted with older adults aged between 65 and 84 years, a total of 27 participants. The data were analyzed using the Atlas.ti 8 software for the thematic analysis. The analysis identified five thematic areas: interests and activities, difficulties and concerns, experiences and motivations for training, expertise and resources, suggestions for the design of the new training. The results were used to develop a first prototype of a Shared, Web-based, Intelligent Flexible Thinking Training (SWIFT), adapted to future user needs. The participation of older adults in this design phase was critical to understanding their needs, motivations, and expectations regarding the implementation and use of a cognitive enhancement training.</p

    Dopant-induced crossover from 1D to 3D charge transport in conjugated polymers

    The interplay between inter- and intra-chain charge transport in bulk polythiophene in the hopping regime has been clarified by studying the conductivity as a function of frequency (up to 3 THz), temperature and doping level. We present a model which quantitatively explains the observed crossover from quasi-one-dimensional transport to three-dimensional hopping conduction with increasing doping level. At high frequencies the conductivity is dominated by charge transport on one-dimensional conducting chains.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure

    Hodgkin's lymphoma presenting with heart failure: a case report

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Cardiac involvement in malignant lymphoma is one of the least investigated subjects in oncology. This article reports a case of cardiac involvement in Hodgkin's lymphoma which presented as heart failure.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>We report the case of an 8-year-old Afghan girl with Hodgkin's lymphoma. The disease presented with systemic signs and symptoms, including abdominal distension, weakness, pallor, chills, fever, generalized edema, hepatosplenomegaly and generalized lymphadenopathy, as well as signs of heart failure. Test results showed a rare form of heart metastasis.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>We report a case of Hodgkin's lymphoma with metastasis to the heart, detected premortem. Although the involvement of the heart in a malignancy is relatively common, premortem detection is unusual and only few studies have reported it in the literature.</p

    Variable-range hopping in quasi-one-dimensional electron crystals

    We study the effect of impurities on the ground state and the low-temperature dc transport in a 1D chain and quasi-1D systems of many parallel chains. We assume that strong interactions impose a short-range periodicicity of the electron positions. The long-range order of such an electron crystal (or equivalently, a 4kF4 k_F charge-density wave) is destroyed by impurities. The 3D array of chains behaves differently at large and at small impurity concentrations NN. At large NN, impurities divide the chains into metallic rods. The low-temperature conductivity is due to the variable-range hopping of electrons between the rods. It obeys the Efros-Shklovskii (ES) law and increases exponentially as NN decreases. When NN is small, the metallic-rod picture of the ground state survives only in the form of rare clusters of atypically short rods. They are the source of low-energy charge excitations. In the bulk the charge excitations are gapped and the electron crystal is pinned collectively. A strongly anisotropic screening of the Coulomb potential produces an unconventional linear in energy Coulomb gap and a new law of the variable-range hopping lnσ(T1/T)2/5-\ln\sigma \sim (T_1 / T)^{2/5}. T1T_1 remains constant over a finite range of impurity concentrations. At smaller NN the 2/5-law is replaced by the Mott law, where the conductivity gets suppressed as NN goes down. Thus, the overall dependence of σ\sigma on NN is nonmonotonic. In 1D, the granular-rod picture and the ES apply at all NN. The conductivity decreases exponentially with NN.     Mitral valve prolapse associated with celiac artery stenosis: a new ultrasonographic syndrome?

    BACKGROUND: Celiac artery stenosis (CAS) may be caused by atherosclerotic degeneration or compression exerted by the arched ligament of the diaphragm. Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) is the most common valvular disorder. There are no reports on an association between CAS and MVP. METHODS: 1560 (41%) out of 3780 consecutive patients undergoing echocardiographic assessment of MVP, had Doppler sonography of the celiac tract to detect CAS. RESULTS: CAS was found in 57 (3.7%) subjects (23 males and 34 females) none of whom complained of symptoms related to visceral ischemia. MVP was observed in 47 (82.4%) subjects with and 118 (7.9%) without CAS (p < 0.001). The agreement between MVP and CAS was 39% (95% CI 32–49%). PSV (Peak Systolic Velocity) was the only predictor of CAS in MPV patients (OR 0.24, 95% CI 0.08–0.69) as selected in a multivariate logistic model. CONCLUSION: CAS and MVP seem to be significantly associated in patients undergoing consecutive ultrasonographic screening

Preliminary reports suggested a similar positive effect in reducing the degeneration of aortic valve bioprostheses even though this hypothesis should be further proven and supported by new data.
