    Comparing Rural and Non-rural Principal’s Instructional Leadership in the Age of ESSA

    This qualitative study compares the instructional leadership practices of rural and non-rural principals, seeking to understand contextually based differences in how principals create a focus on teaching and learning. Principals across settings report similarities in instructional leadership tasks; however, they reported significant contextual differences in how they are carried out. These include the use of formal distributed leadership in non-rural schools and informal distributed leadership in rural schools. Additionally, rural principals report adaptive practices that shape policy implementation in ways that support people-centered leadership. We conclude with areas for additional research: the unique demands of the role of principal-superintendent; how principals make sense of multiple messages about instructional leadership; and the qualitative aspects of instructional leadership that support principal effectiveness

    SACY - a Search for Associations Containing Young stars

    The scientific goal of the SACY (Search for Associations Containing Young-stars) was to identify possible associations of stars younger than the Pleiades Association among optical counterparts of the ROSAT X-ray bright sources. High-resolution spectra for possible optical counterparts later than G0 belonging to HIPPARCOS and/or TYCHO-2 catalogs were obtained in order to assess both the youth and the spatial motion of each target. More than 1000 ROSAT sources were observed, covering a large area in the Southern Hemisphere. The newly identified young stars present a patchy distribution in UVW and XYZ, revealing the existence of huge nearby young associations.     The Carina-Near Moving Group

    We identify a group of ~20 co-moving, mostly southern hemisphere, ~200 Myr old stars near Earth. Of the stars likely to be members of this Carina-Near Moving Group, in either its nucleus (~30 pc from Earth) or surrounding stream, all but 3 are plausible members of a multiple star system. The nucleus is (coincidentally) located quite close to the nucleus of the AB Doradus moving group notwithstanding that the two groups have substantially different ages and Galactic space motions, UVW.Comment: 9 pages, 1 table, 2 figures.     Identification of a nearby stellar association in the Hipparcos catalog: implications for recent, local star formation

    The TW Hydrae Association (~55 pc from Earth) is the nearest known region of recent star formation. Based primarily on the Hipparcos catalog, we have now identified a group of 9 or 10 co-moving star systems at a common distance (~45 pc) from Earth that appear to comprise another, somewhat older, association (``the Tucanae Association''). Together with ages and motions recently determined for some nearby field stars, the existence of the Tucanae and TW Hydrae Associations suggests that the Sun is now close to a region that was the site of substantial star formation only 10-40 million years ago. The TW Hydrae Association represents a final chapter in the local star formation history.Comment: 5 pages incl figs and table

At the same time the context of computing changed dramatically: from a device used almost exclusively by specialists, it evolved to a general device that plays a dominant role in our societies. But where does this leave TUI? In many respects, the idea of tangibility plays a marginal role in Human Computer Interaction. It makes sense to re-evaluate the intrinsic values of TUI design.     The Coronal Structure of AB Doradus

    We perform a numerical simulation of the corona of the young, rapidly rotating K0 dwarf AB Doradus using a global MHD model. The model is driven by a surface map of the radial magnetic field constructed using Zeeman-Doppler Imaging. We find that the global structure of the stellar corona is dominated by strong azimuthal tangling of the magnetic field due to the rapid rotation. The MHD solution enables us to calculate realistic Alfv\'en surfaces and we can therefore estimate the stellar mass loss rate and angular momentum loss rate without making undue theoretical simplifications. We consider three cases, parametrized by the base density of the corona, that span the range of possible solutions for the system. We find that overall, the mass and angular-momentum loss rates are higher than in the solar case; the mass loss rates are 10 to 500 times higher, and the angular momentum loss rate can be up to 3×1043\times{10}^4 higher than present day solar values. Our simulations show that this model can be use to constrain the wide parameter space of stellar systems. It also shows that an MHD approach can provide more information about the physical system over the commonly used potential field extrapolation.Comment: 13 pages, 7 figure

    Low Luminosity Companions to White Dwarfs

    This paper presents results of a near-infrared imaging survey for low mass stellar and substellar companions to white dwarfs. A wide field proper motion survey of 261 white dwarfs was capable of directly detecting companions at orbital separations between 100\sim100 and 5000 AU with masses as low as 0.05 MM_{\odot}, while a deep near field search of 86 white dwarfs was capable of directly detecting companions at separations between 50\sim50 and 1100 AU with masses as low as 0.02 MM_{\odot}. Additionally, all white dwarf targets were examined for near-infrared excess emission, a technique capable of detecting companions at arbitrarily close separations down to masses of 0.05 MM_{\odot}. No brown dwarf candidates were detected, which implies a brown dwarf companion fraction of <0.5<0.5% for white dwarfs. In contrast, the stellar companion fraction of white dwarfs as measured by this survey is 22%, uncorrected for bias. Moreover, most of the known and suspected stellar companions to white dwarfs are low mass stars whose masses are only slightly greater than the masses of brown dwarfs. Twenty previously unknown stellar companions were detected, five of which are confirmed or likely white dwarfs themselves, while fifteen are confirmed or likely low mass stars. Similar to the distribution of cool field dwarfs as a function of spectral type, the number of cool unevolved dwarf companions peaks at mid-M type. Based on the present work, relative to this peak, field L dwarfs appear to be roughly 2-3 times more abundant than companion L dwarfs.     Direct detection of a substellar companion to the young nearby star PZ Telescopii

    Aims: We study the formation of substellar objects (exoplanets and brown dwarfs) as companions to young nearby stars. Methods: With high contrast AO imaging obtained with NACO at ESO's VLT we search for faint companion-candidates around our targets, whose companionship can be confirmed with astrometry. Results: In the course of our imaging campaign we found a faint substellar companion of the nearby pre-main sequence star PZ Tel, a member of the beta Pic moving group. The companion is 5-6 mag fainter than its host star in JHK and is located at a separation of only 0.3 arcsec (or 15 AU of projected separation) north-east of PZ Tel. Within three NACO observing epochs we could confirm common proper motion (>39 sigma) and detected orbital motion of PZ Tel B around its primary (>37 sigma). The photometry of the newly found companion is consistent with a brown dwarf with a mass of 24 to 40 MJup, at the distance (50 pc) and age (8-20 Myr) of PZ Tel. The effective temperature of the companion, derived from its photometry, ranges between 2500 and 2700 K, which corresponds to a spectral type between M6 and M8. After beta Pic b, PZ Tel B is the second closest substellar companion imaged directly around a young star.Comment: accepted for publication in A&A Letter

    Asymmetric Primitive-Model Electrolytes: Debye-Huckel Theory, Criticality and Energy Bounds

    Debye-Huckel (DH) theory is extended to treat two-component size- and charge-asymmetric primitive models, focussing primarily on the 1:1 additive hard-sphere electrolyte with, say, negative ion diameters, a--, larger than the positive ion diameters, a++. The treatment highlights the crucial importance of the charge-unbalanced ``border zones'' around each ion into which other ions of only one species may penetrate. Extensions of the DH approach which describe the border zones in a physically reasonable way are exact at high TT and low density, ρ\rho, and, furthermore, are also in substantial agreement with recent simulation predictions for \emph{trends} in the critical parameters, TcT_c and ρc\rho_c, with increasing size asymmetry. Conversely, the simplest linear asymmetric DH description, which fails to account for physically expected behavior in the border zones at low TT, can violate a new lower bound on the energy (which applies generally to models asymmetric in both charge and size). Other recent theories, including those based on the mean spherical approximation, have predicted trends in the critical parameters quite opposite to those established by the simulations.Comment: to appear in Physical Review

    Applications of Temperley-Lieb algebras to Lorentz lattice gases

    Motived by the study of motion in a random environment we introduce and investigate a variant of the Temperley-Lieb algebra. This algebra is very rich, providing us three classes of solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation. This allows us to establish a theoretical framework to study the diffusive behaviour of a Lorentz Lattice gas.
