Contact and voter processes on the infinite percolation cluster as models of host-symbiont interactions
We introduce spatially explicit stochastic processes to model multispecies
host-symbiont interactions. The host environment is static, modeled by the
infinite percolation cluster of site percolation. Symbionts evolve on the
infinite cluster through contact or voter type interactions, where each host
may be infected by a colony of symbionts. In the presence of a single symbiont
species, the condition for invasion as a function of the density of the habitat
of hosts and the maximal size of the colonies is investigated in details. In
the presence of multiple symbiont species, it is proved that the community of
symbionts clusters in two dimensions whereas symbiont species may coexist in

A Voltage Calibration Chain for Meters Used in Measurements of EV Inductive Power Charging
The inductive charging of electric vehicles requires specific measurement and
calibration systems. In fact, the measurement of power on board involves DC
signals, which are superimposed to a significant AC ripple up to or over 150
kHz, depending on the type of charging system. A calibration method that makes
use of a phantom power, based on two independent but synchronized circuits, is
considered, simulating the charging voltage and current. This paper describes
in detail a solution in the realization of the voltage calibration chain, based

Conditions for electron-cyclotron maser emission in the solar corona
Context. The Sun is an active source of radio emission ranging from long
duration radio bursts associated with solar flares and coronal mass ejections
to more complex, short duration radio bursts such as solar S bursts, radio
spikes and fibre bursts. While plasma emission is thought to be the dominant
emission mechanism for most radio bursts, the electron-cyclotron maser (ECM)
mechanism may be responsible for more complex, short-duration bursts as well as
fine structures associated with long-duration bursts. Aims. We investigate the
conditions for ECM in the solar corona by considering the ratio of the electron
plasma frequency {\omega}p to the electron-cyclotron frequency {\Omega}e. The
ECM is theoretically possible when {\omega}p/{\Omega}e < 1. Methods.
Two-dimensional electron density, magnetic field, plasma frequency, and
electron cyclotron frequency maps of the off- limb corona were created using
observations from SDO/AIA and SOHO/LASCO, together with potential field
extrapolations of the magnetic field. These maps were then used to calculate
{\omega}p/{\Omega}e and Alfven velocity maps of the off-limb corona. Results.
We found that the condition for ECM emission ({\omega}p/{\Omega}e < 1) is
possible at heights < 1.07 R_sun in an active region near the limb; that is,
where magnetic field strengths are > 40 G and electron densities are greater
than 3x10^8 cm-3. In addition, we found comparatively high Alfv\'en velocities
(> 0.02 c or > 6000 km s-1) at heights < 1.07 R_sun within the active region.
Conclusions. This demonstrates that the condition for ECM emission is satisfied
within areas of the corona containing large magnetic fields, such as the core
of a large active region. Therefore, ECM could be a possible emission mechanism
for high-frequency radio and microwave bursts.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Radio halos in merging clusters of galaxies
We present the preliminary results of 235 MHz, 327 MHz and 610 MHz
observations of the galaxy cluster A3562 in the core of the Shapley
Concentration. The purpose of these observations, carried out with the Giant
Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT, Pune, India) was to study the radio halo
located at the centre of A3562 and determine the shape of its radio spectrum at
low frequencies, in order to understand the origin of this source. In the
framework of the re--acceleration model, the preliminary analysis of the halo
spectrum suggests that we are observing a young source (few yrs) at the

Equality of Corecursive Streams Defined by Finitary Equational Systems
In recent work, non-regular streams have been defined corecursively, by representing them with finitary equational systems built on top of various operators, besides the standard constructor. With finitary equational systems based only on the stream constructor, one can use the free theory of regular (a.k.a. rational) trees to get a sound and complete procedure to decide whether two streams are equal. However, this is not the case if one allows other operators in equations, since the underlying equational theory becomes non-trivial, hence equality of regular trees is too strong to guarantee termination of corecursive functions defined even only with the constructor and tail operators. To overcome this problem, we provide a weaker definition of equality between streams denoted by finitary equational systems built on different stream operators, including tail operator and constructor, and prove its soundness
Enhancing Expressivity of Checked Corecursive Streams
We propose a novel approach to stream definition and manipulation. Our solution is based on two key ideas. Regular corecursion, which avoids non termination by detecting cyclic calls, is enhanced, by allowing in equations defining streams other operators besides the stream constructor. In this way, some non-regular streams are definable. Furthermore, execution includes a runtime check to ensure that the stream generated by a function call is well-defined, in the sense that access to an arbitrary index always succeeds. We extend the technique beyond the simple stream operators considered in previous work, notably by adding an interleaving combinator which has a non-trivial recursion scheme
A note on reaction to novel stimulus and restraint by therapeutic riding horses
Little research has been done to measure reactivity objectively in therapeutic riding horses (TRH). As individual reactivity and chronic stress could be assessed by exposing animals to acute, novel stressors, the authors of this work aimed at comparing reactions of TRHs and jumping horses (JH) to two challenges. Four TRHs and four JHs were exposed to a restraint covering their head with a hood for I h and to a startling stimulus (a 40 cm long, red and white synthetic holiday garland shaken with a rustling noise inside the box). Heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV) were recorded continuously and telemetrically, the reaction was video-recorded and analysed with a software for behavioural analysis. Blood samples were collected before and after each challenge to determine lymphocyte proliferation and other biochemical parameters. Horses spent most of the time immobile, during the challenges (p < 0.05). TRHs had a significantly higher average basal HR than JH (p < 0.05), probably due to their better condition. HR varied among different behaviours during the restraint (p < 0.05): the average HR during "pawing" was higher than during other behaviours (p < 0.005). A significant decrease in the proliferation of lymphocytes in samples taken after the removal of the hood (p < 0.05) was found, while the other stress related parameters did not vary significantly after the challenges. The authors conclude that TRHs did not react less than JHs to the new stimuli and this should be taken into consideration while planning their daily work and management
Measuring the Performance of Underplatform Dampers for Turbine Blades by Rotating Laser Doppler Vibrometer
Underplatform friction dampers are commonly used to control the vibration level of turbine blades in order to prevent high-cycle fatigue failures. Experimental validation of highly non-linear response predictions obtained from FEM bladed disk models incorporating underplatform dampers models, has proved to be very difficult so as the assessment of the performance of a chosen design. In this paper, the effect of wedgeshaped underplatform dampers on the dynamics of a simple bladed disk under rotating conditions is measured and the effect of the excitation level on the UPDs performances is investigated at different number of the engine order excitation nearby resonance frequencies of the 1st blade bending modes of the system. Corecursive featherweight Java revisited
We describe a Java-like calculus which supports cyclic data structures, and offers a mechanism of flexible regular corecursion for their manipulation. The calculus enhances an earlier proposal by a more sophisticated reduction semantics, which filters out, by an additional check, some spurious results which were obtained in the previous model
Spectral properties and origin of the radio halo in A3562
We present a new detailed multiband study of the merging cluster A3562, in
the core of the Shapley Concentration Supercluster. We analyzed new, low
frequency radio data performed at 240 MHz, 332 MHz and 610 MHz with the Giant
Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT). The new GMRT data allowed us to carry out a
detailed study of the radio halo at the centre of A3562, as well as of the
head--tail radio galaxy J1333--3141 embedded in it, and of the extended
emission around the peripheral cluster galaxy J1332--3146a. Thanks to the
present observations we could derive the integrated spectrum of the radio halo
with five data points in the frequency range 240 MHz -- 1.4 GHz. Our data show
a clear steepening of the total spectrum in this frequency range. Furthermore,
by comparing the GMRT 332 MHz image with a previously published VLA 1.4 GHz
image, we produced an image of the halo spectral index distribution. The image
shows a very complex structure, with an average value of
and a number of knots steepening up to
. We performed a combined morphological and statistical analysis using
the radio images and the quantities derived from XMM--Newton and {\it Chandra}
observations. We discuss our results in the light of particle re--acceleration
processes in galaxy clusters. In particular, we outline an overall picture,
consistent with the available radio and X-ray data, in which the cluster merger
kinematics, the injection of turbulence and B--amplification induced by the
