Carmen Nestares\u27s Venus en Buenos Aires: Neocolonialist Cyber-Romance, Virtual Lies, and the Transatlantic Queer

    Get PDF
Carmen Nestares\u27s novel Venus en Buenos Aires (2001) chronicles a transatlantic lesbian love affair between a Spaniard and an Argentinean that begins in cyber-space and culminates in reality. At first, the novel reads innocently as an uncomplicated cyber-romance fiction, but once the romance becomes physical after the lovers meet on Latin American soil, certain unsettling elements arise. Online, the Spanish and Argentinean cultures, supposedly united by the same language, seem to intermingle easily and graciously, but offline, they are more conflicted, as the Spanish lover adopts a neocolonialist stance. From a distance she considers Argentina a land of capitalist promise and potential wealth, but once there she reveals a lack of comprehension of Argentine reality. Hence this article focuses on the disturbing semantics of neocolonialist politics that lurk beneath neo-utopian transatlantic Lesbos and its pseudo-democratic online rhetoric

The study of the reception of seventeenth-century British scientists in Spain has been carried out only partially. Key figures representing early modern English and Scottish scientific thought are well researched, like Newton or Napier, but in general, the presence of their books in Spanish libraries remains to be precised. This BA Dissertation will use such bibliographical study to provide fresh evidence on the circulation of the works of British scientists within our libraries in the 1600s. It looks at the copies of the works of John Napier, Hugh Semple, John Selden, and Francis Bacon kept in the Historical Library of Santa Cruz, Valladolid, and describes their copyspecific features and marks of provenance. The aim is to confirm whether these authors only began to be studied in Spain in the late 1700s, as is generally sustained, and contribute new pieces on evidence of how and why that may have been.

    Get PDF

One of these cases is the endogenous cannabinoid system (ECS), which has been involved in almost every central and peripheral function.4-7 However, there is no drug in the market targeting this system so far. In this context, it seems clear that there is a crucial need to understand some aspects of the biology of the ECS in a deeper manner. Among them, the cellular location of cannabinoid receptors (CBRs), as well as their localization within the cell, the existence of other cannabinoid targets different from the molecularly characterized CB1R and CB2R, and the study of interesting cannabinoid-related ligands, might help to exploit the therapeutic potential of the ECS. Thus, the overall objectives for the present work are: i) the development of probes to study the expression of CBRs in the immune system, ii) the design and synthesis of tools to explore the differences between plasma and mitochondrial CB1Rs, iii) the discovery of the off-targets of the synthetic CBR agonists HU210 and HU308, and iv) the identification of the binding proteins of the natural product honokiol...Depto. de Química OrgánicaFac. de Ciencias QuímicasTRUEunpu

The El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) Modoki signal in the stratosphere

El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is known to be the largest source of interannual variability in the tropical troposphere. However, the variability in the tropical Pacific since 1979 seems to be associated not only with "canonical" ENSO events but also with a variation thereof known as ENSO Modoki, which is characterized by warm anomalies in the central Pacific, west from those occurring during a typical ENSO. This works analyzes the signal of ENSO Modoki in the stratosphere and compares it to canonical ENSO by using the chemistry-climate Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model (WACCM3.5). The results reveal a significant warming in the Southern Hemisphere polar stratosphere during boreal winter months, which propagates downward in early spring; this is absent during canonical warm ENSO events. On the other hand, in the Northern Hemisphere stratosphere, the anomalous warming typical of canonical El Niño episodes during boreal winter is not statistically significant during El Niño Modoki events. These differences are related in WACCM3.5 to changes in tropical convection and tropospheric teleconnections associated with each type of event. In particular, an enhancement and westward displacement of the anomalous convective area during El Niño Modoki episodes is related to an intensification of the Pacific South American teleconnection pattern and a weakening of the Aleutian Low. During cold ENSO Modoki events a significant anomalous cooling is present in the model simulations

Linking water treatment practices and fish welfare

Peracetic acids can be used as sanitizers to control water quality in aquaculture systems. As an alternative to formalin, chloramine-T or copper sulphate, PAA has strong anti-microbial effects, degrades quickly and is relatively safe to use. Its mode of action and associated rapid decay can make optimizing treatment protocols a challenge. Continuous low-dose applications seem to be a promising solution. In this preliminary study behavioral response was used to assess potential correlations with PAA dosage. A behavioral change or response is not necessarily an indication of compromised welfare. Supportive enzymatic, biochemical and physiological biomarkers can be used along with gill and epidermal histological measures to evaluate the effects on water treatment regimens. The ultimate goal is to define the therapeutic window where fish welfare is not compromised.PAA is among the few disinfectants approved for organic aquaculture

    Get PDF
Territorial servitization is a topic of interest due its impact on regional growth and innovation. Considering that the formation of new KIBS is a good indicator of such TS process and with the aim of contributing to the empirical literature on this topic, this study analyses to what extent the ‘manufacturing quality’ and ‘innovation environment’ profiles determined the different types of new knowledge intensive business services (KIBS). The research tackles the creation of new KIBS in 17 Spanish regions for the period 2000 to 2016 in the respective regions. The results reveal that new KIBS were deeply affected by economic changes that happened as a result of the great 2008 crisis and some KIBS categories are more affected by the techno-economic environment than others.

The central idea of this thesis is motivated by understanding that the main function of a museum is pedagogical. And if that is its engine, it must go out and look for whoever listens to what it has to say. That is why the central themes of the thesis are multural management, cultural heritage and museology, themes that help the study of the particular case of the Regional Historical Museum of Ayacucho (MHRA). Finally, the thesis not only performs an analysis of the MHRA, but also proposes an actual implementation project that makes the museum self-sustainable and inclusive.Facultad de Bellas Arte
