From the Harbour of Venice to the Kingdom of Hungary: Art and Trade in the 11th-13th Centuries

Venice and Hungary had an intensive but frequently changing relation in the Middle Ages. The second king of the country originated from the Orseolo family. The rivalry between Venice and Hungary led to conflicts from the 12th century onward in the Dalmatian region. On the other hand, the commercial connections were flourishing and Venice was the most important trading partner of medieval Hungary. After 1204 Venice played a key role in mediating goods from the Far East as well as from the Arabic and Byzantine world to Central Europe. This is also a turning point in the artistic relations. Before the 13th century, Venetian influences are mostly visible in stone carvings. This stylistic impact originating from Venice seems to diminish during the 13th century, while stylistic connections has been revealed in the field of goldsmithwork - a genre easy to transport

We have more than a thousand manuscripts of the great hagiographical collection, the Legenda Aurea of Jacobus de Voragine from the 13th century, but there is only one codex which not only illustrated the text but translated it into a language of images. It is related to the Hungarian Anjous, that is why the codex is titled 'Hungarian Angevin Legendary'. The pages of the codex are spread over different collections of the world. Nowadays 58 legends are known on 142 pages, altogether 549 images. Some more important legends, as that of the apostles or the Anjous' favourite saint, King Ladislas, occupy 20-24 images. The paper tries to demonstrate two examples. St. Martin and St. Gerard, of how these cycles were organised. Two pictures of the supposed eight are emphasising the role of Martin as a bishop. Five images show the miracles of the saint and only one is consecrated to the charity of St. Martin, to the event which is his most popular story. Martin is the symbolic saint who gives half his goods to the poor. This scene is the most frequently represented in medieval art. In the Hungarian Angevin Legendary his miraculous activity is much more emphasized which is correlated with the written legend. The legend of St. Gerard is preserved completely in the Legendary. The first picture represents the saint discussing with King St. Stephen. On the second image the saint is represented as a hermit at Bakonybél with a book in his hand. The third one depicts the consecration of St. Gerard to the bishop of Csanåd, on the next picture he is preaching to the people. The following pictures show his martyrdom and burial. It can be supposed that the painter(s) of the Hungarian Angevin Legendary could not use any iconographical tradition working on the cycle of St. Gerard

Coeliac disease (CeD) is an immune-mediated disease, which develops upon gluten ingestion in genetically predisposed individuals. CeD patients are at a higher risk of acute arterial and venous thrombotic events. In this study, we aimed to assess if prothrombotic alterations characterize CeD patients, with special focus on rheological properties of blood and its cellular elements, i.e. haemorheology. This study is a case-control study registered under registration number ISRCTN49677481. Cases were adult, biopsy-verified CeD patients, controls were subjects in whom CeD was excluded. All participants were free from acute and advanced chronic diseases. In addition to a routine set of laboratory studies, we measured haemorheological parameters, the activity of natural anticoagulants (protein C, protein S and antithrombin) and the level of homocysteine. The haemorheological profile included haematocrit, whole blood viscosity (WBV), plasma viscosity, fibrinogen, erythrocyte aggregation (EA) and erythrocyte deformability (ED, described with the elongation index at high and low shear stresses). We compared CeD patients to control subjects with uni- and multivariate statistics and investigated the effects of dietary adherence in CeD

If one hears the word construction industry, one probably associates it with building a house, but the concept of construction industry covers a much larger area and can be divided into colourful periods. Architecture is the transformation of the built environment. On the one hand it is one of the branches of arts (applied arts), on the other hand it is one of the branches of engineering and technology disciplines. Nowadays, more and more environment-friendly technology is used in the construction industry, and already in the design stage a considerable emphasis is put on the use of renewable energy resources, in particular the use of solar cells. To measure the trends in the construction industry and in the building of public works we have also prepared a questionnaire which was filled in by 100 managers of enterprises.
