    Typing Quantum Superpositions and Measurement

    We propose a way to unify two approaches of non-cloning in quantum lambda-calculi. The first approach is to forbid duplicating variables, while the second is to consider all lambda-terms as algebraic-linear functions. We illustrate this idea by defining a quantum extension of first-order simply-typed lambda-calculus, where the type is linear on superposition, while allows cloning base vectors.     Stochastic Geometric Coverage Analysis in mmWave Cellular Networks With Realistic Channel and Antenna Radiation Models

    Millimeter-wave (mmWave) bands will play an important role in 5G wireless systems. The system performance can be assessed by using models from stochastic geometry that cater for the directivity in the desired signal transmissions as well as the interference, and by calculating the signal-To-interference-plus-noise ratio ( \mathsf {SINR} ) coverage. Nonetheless, the accuracy of the existing coverage expressions derived through stochastic geometry may be questioned, as it is not clear whether they would capture the impact of the detailed mmWave channel and antenna features. In this paper, we propose an \mathsf {SINR} coverage analysis framework that includes realistic channel model and antenna element radiation patterns. We introduce and estimate two parameters, aligned gain and misaligned gain, associated with the desired signal beam and the interfering signal beam, respectively. The distributions of these gains are used to determine the distribution of the \mathsf {SINR} which is compared with the corresponding \mathsf {SINR} coverage, calculated through the system-level simulations. The results show that both aligned and misaligned gains can be modeled as exponential-logarithmically distributed random variables with the highest accuracy, and can further be approximated as exponentially distributed random variables with reasonable accuracy. These approximations can be used as a tool to evaluate the system-level performance of various 5G connectivity scenarios in the mmWave band.</p

    The Low Energy Tagger for the KLOE-2 experiment

    The KLOE experiment at the upgraded DAFNE e+e- collider in Frascati (KLOE-2) is going to start a new data taking at the beginning of 2010 with its detector upgraded with a tagging system for the identification of gamma-gamma interactions. The tagging stations for low-energy e+e- will consist in two calorimeters The calorimeter used to detect low-energy e+e- will be placed between the beam-pipe outer support structure and the inner wall of the KLOE drift chamber.     Subchondroplasty in the treatment of bone marrow lesions of the knee: Preliminary experience on first 15 patients

    Purpose The aim of this prospective study was to assess the effectiveness in terms of pain relief and functional improvement of the Subchondroplasty procedure in the treatment of osteoarthritis-related bone marrow lesions (BMLs) of the knee. Methods The study included first 15 consecutive patients undergone to Subchon-droplasty procedure for the treatment of chronic degenerative BMLs in which previous conservative treatment have failed. Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) scores, Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Scores (KOOS), and visual analog scale (VAS) pain scores were obtained preoperatively and at 1, 6, and 12 months of follow-up. Results WOMAC scores significantly improved from 39.7 \ub1 20.2 before surgery to 26.8 \ub1 16.1 at the 1-month follow-up (p = 0.045). A further significant improvement to 15.5 \ub1 12.7 (p = 0.02) and to 8.6 \ub1 3.1 (p <0.01) was obtained both at 6-month and at 1-year follow-up. KOOS scores improved significantly from 47.5 \ub1 16.6 before surgery to 65.4 \ub1 14.9 at 1 month (p = 0.013) and to 80.4 \ub1 15.1 at 6-month follow-up (p = 0.01). A further improvement to 85.6 \ub1 15.1 was recorded 1 year postoperatively, although nonsignificant. VAS score showed a significant improvement from 55.8 \ub1 20.5 preoperatively to 36.2 \ub1 16.9 at 1 month (p = 0.008) and to 18.2 \ub1 17.3 at 6-month follow-up (p = 0.005). This further improved to 12.8 \ub1 17.9 at 1-year follow-up, although not significantly. Conclusion Subchondroplasty procedure represents a safe and valid surgical option in the treatment of osteoarthritis-related BMLs of the knee, providing an improvement in terms of pain relief and functional recovery.     The prognostic value of pulmonary artery compliance in cardiogenic shock.

    The aim of this study was to evaluate the pathophysiological role and the prognostic significance of pulmonary artery compliance (C &lt;sub&gt;PA&lt;/sub&gt; ), a measure of right ventricular pulsatile afterload, in cardiogenic shock. We retrospectively included 91 consecutive patients with cardiogenic shock due to primary left ventricular failure, monitored with a pulmonary artery catheter within the first 24 h. C &lt;sub&gt;PA&lt;/sub&gt; was calculated as the ratio of stroke volume to pulmonary artery pulse pressure, and we determined whether C &lt;sub&gt;PA&lt;/sub&gt; predicted mortality and whether it performed better than other pulmonary hemodynamic variables. The overall in-hospital mortality in our cohort was 27%. Survivors and nonsurvivors had comparable left ventricular ejection fraction, systolic, diastolic and mean pulmonary artery pressure, transpulmonary gradient, diastolic pressure gradient, and pulmonary vascular resistance at 24 h. In contrast, C &lt;sub&gt;PA&lt;/sub&gt; was the only pulmonary artery variable significantly associated with mortality in univariate and multivariate analyses. Mortality increased from 4.5% at the highest quartile of C &lt;sub&gt;PA&lt;/sub&gt; (3.6-6.5 mL/mmHg) to 43.5% at the lowest quartile (0.7-1.7 mL/mmHg). In 64 patients with a PAC inserted immediately upon admission, we calculated the trend of C &lt;sub&gt;PA&lt;/sub&gt; between admission and 24 h. This trend was positive in survivors (+0.8 ± 1.3 ml/mmHg) but negative in nonsurvivors (-0.1 ± 1.0 mL/mmHg). The lower C &lt;sub&gt;PA&lt;/sub&gt; in nonsurvivors was associated with more severe right ventricular systolic dysfunction. In conclusion, a reduced compliance of the pulmonary artery promotes right ventricular dysfunction and is independently associated with mortality in cardiogenic shock. Future studies should evaluate the impact on pulmonary arterial compliance and right ventricular afterload of therapies used in cardiogenic shock

    The impact of Action Schools! BC on the health of aboriginal children and youth living in rural and remote communities in British Columbia

    Objectives: The aim of the study was to determine the short-term impact of a 7-month whole-school physical activity and healthy eating intervention (Action Schools! BC) over the 2007-2008 school year for children and youth in 3 remote First Nations villages in northwestern British Columbia. Study design: A pre-experimental pre/post design was conducted with 148 children and youth (77 males, 71 females; age 12.5±2.2 yrs). Methods: We evaluated changes in obesity (body mass index [wt/ht 2] and waist circumference z-scores: zBMI and zWC), aerobic fitness (20-m shuttle run), physical activity (PA; physical activity questionnaire and accelerometry), healthy eating (dietary recall) and cardiovascular risk (CV risk). Results: zBMI remained unchanged while zWC increased from 0.46±1.07 to 0.57±1.04 (pB0.05). No change was detected in PA or CV risk but aerobic fitness increased by 22% (25.4±15.8 to 30.9±20.0 laps; p\u3c0.01). There was an increase in the variety of vegetables consumed (1.10±1.18 to 1.45±1.24; p\u3c0.05) but otherwise no dietary changes were detected. Conclusions: While no changes were seen in PA or overall CV risk, zWC increased, zBMI remained stable and aerobic fitness improved during a 7-month intervention. © 2012 Dona Tomlin et al

    Wind turbine lifetime extension decision-making based on structural health monitoring

    In this work, structural health monitoring data is applied to underpin a long-term wind farm lifetime extension strategy. Based on the outcome of the technical analysis, the case for an extended lifetime of 15 years is argued. Having established the lifetime extension strategy, the single wind turbine investigated within a wind farm is subjected to a bespoke economic lifetime extension case study. In this case study, the local wind resource is taken into consideration, paired with central, optimistic, and pessimistic operational cost assumptions. Besides a deterministic approach, a stochastic analysis is carried out based on Monte Carlo simulations of selected scenarios. Findings reveal the economic potential to operate profitably in a subsidy-free environment with a P90 levelised cost of energy of £25.02 if no component replacement is required within the nacelle and £42.53 for a complete replacement of blades, generator, and gearbox

    Benign hereditary chorea and deletions outside NKX2-1 : what&apos;s the role of MBIP?

    Heterozygous point mutations or deletions of the NKX2-1 gene cause benign hereditary chorea (BHC) or a various combinations of primary hypothyroidism, respiratory distress and neurological disorders. Deletions proximal to, but not encompassing, NKX2-1 have been described in few subjects with brain-lung-thyroid syndrome. We report on a three-generation Italian family, with 6 subjects presenting BHC and harboring a genomic deletion adjacent to NKX2-1 and including the gene MBIP, recently proposed to be relevant for the pathogenesis of brain-lung-thyroid syndrome. We observed a clear reduction of NKX2-1 transcript levels in fibroblasts from our patients compared to controls; this finding suggests that MBIP deletion affects NKX2-1 expression, mimicking haploinsufficiency caused by classical NKX2-1 related mutations
