An analysis of I/O efficient order-statistic-based techniques for noise power estimation in the HRMS sky survey's operational system
Noise power estimation in the High-Resolution Microwave Survey (HRMS) sky survey element is considered as an example of a constant false alarm rate (CFAR) signal detection problem. Order-statistic-based noise power estimators for CFAR detection are considered in terms of required estimator accuracy and estimator dynamic range. By limiting the dynamic range of the value to be estimated, the performance of an order-statistic estimator can be achieved by simpler techniques requiring only a single pass of the data. Simple threshold-and-count techniques are examined, and it is shown how several parallel threshold-and-count estimation devices can be used to expand the dynamic range to meet HRMS system requirements with minimal hardware complexity. An input/output (I/O) efficient limited-precision order-statistic estimator with wide but limited dynamic range is also examined
The role of spatial and temporal radiation deposition in inertial fusion chambers: the case of HiPER¿
The first wall armour for the reactor chamber of HiPER will have to face short energy pulses of 5 to 20 MJ mostly in the form of x-rays and charged particles at a repetition rate of 5–10 Hz. Armour material and chamber dimensions have to be chosen to avoid/minimize damage to the chamber, ensuring the proper functioning of the facility during its planned lifetime. The maximum energy fluence that the armour can withstand without risk of failure, is determined by temporal and spatial deposition of the radiation energy inside the material. In this paper, simulations on the thermal effect of the radiation–armour interaction are carried out with an increasing definition of the temporal and spatial deposition of energy to prove their influence on the final results. These calculations will lead us to present the first values of the thermo-mechanical behaviour of the tungsten armour designed for the HiPER project under a shock ignition target of 48 MJ. The results will show that only the crossing of the plasticity limit in the first few micrometres might be a threat after thousands of shots for the survivability of the armour
Hot dense capsule implosion cores produced by z-pinch dynamic hohlraum radiation
Hot dense capsule implosions driven by z-pinch x-rays have been measured for
the first time. A ~220 eV dynamic hohlraum imploded 1.7-2.1 mm diameter
gas-filled CH capsules which absorbed up to ~20 kJ of x-rays. Argon tracer atom
spectra were used to measure the Te~ 1keV electron temperature and the ne ~ 1-4
x10^23 cm-3 electron density. Spectra from multiple directions provide core
symmetry estimates. Computer simulations agree well with the peak compression
values of Te, ne, and symmetry, indicating reasonable understanding of the
hohlraum and implosion physics.Comment: submitted to Phys. Rev. Let
Circular holonomy in the Taub-NUT spacetime
Parallel transport around closed circular orbits in the equatorial plane of
the Taub-NUT spacetime is analyzed to reveal the effect of the gravitomagnetic
monopole parameter on circular holonomy transformations. Investigating the
boost/rotation decomposition of the connection 1-form matrix evaluated along
these orbits, one finds a situation that reflects the behavior of the general
orthogonally transitive stationary axisymmetric case and indeed along Killing
trajectories in general.Comment: 9 pages, LaTeX iopart class, no figure
Reactive Oxygen Species Contribute to the Bactericidal Effects of the Fluoroquinolone Moxifloxacin in Streptococcus pneumoniae
We studied the transcriptomic response of Streptococcus pneumoniae to the fluoroquinolone moxifloxacin at a concentration that inhibits DNA gyrase. Treatment of the wild-type strain R6, at a concentration of 10× the MIC, triggered a response involving 132 genes after 30 min of treatment. Genes from several metabolic pathways involved in the production of pyruvate were upregulated. These included 3 glycolytic enzymes, which ultimately convert fructose 6-phosphate to pyruvate, and 2 enzymes that funnel phosphate sugars into the glycolytic pathway. In addition, acetyl coenzyme A (acetyl-CoA) carboxylase was downregulated, likely leading to an increase in acetyl-CoA. When coupled with an upregulation in formate acetyltransferase, an increase in acetyl-CoA would raise the production of pyruvate. Since pyruvate is converted by pyruvate oxidase (SpxB) into hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), an increase in pyruvate would augment intracellular H2O2. Here, we confirm a 21-fold increase in the production of H2O2 and a 55-fold increase in the amount of hydroxyl radical in cultures treated during 4 h with moxifloxacin. This increase in hydroxyl radical through the Fenton reaction would damage DNA, lipids, and proteins. These reactive oxygen species contributed to the lethality of the drug, a conclusion supported by the observed protective effects of an SpxB deletion. These results support the model whereby fluoroquinolones cause redox alterations. The transcriptional response of S. pneumoniae to moxifloxacin is compared with the response to levofloxacin, an inhibitor of topoisomerase IV. Levofloxacin triggers the transcriptional activation of iron transport genes and also enhances the Fenton reaction. This study was supported by grants BIO2011-25343 and BIO2014-55462-R from Plan Nacional de I+D+I of the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness. Time on a Rotating Platform
Traditional clock synchronisation on a rotating platform is shown to be
incompatible with the experimentally established transformation of time. The
latter transformation leads directly to solve this problem through noninvariant
one-way speed of light. The conventionality of some features of relativity
theory allows full compatibility with existing experimental evidence.Comment: 12 pages, Latex, no figure. Copies available at [email protected]

Perturbation study on the spin and charge susceptibilities of the two-dimensional Hubbard model
We investigate the spin and charge susceptibilities of the two-dimensional
Hubbard model based upon the perturbative calculation in the strength of
correlation . For comparable to a bare bandwidth, the charge
susceptibility decreases near the half-filling as hole-doping approaches zero.
This behavior suggesting the precursor of the Mott-Hubbard gap formation cannot
be obtained without the vertex corrections beyond the random phase
approximation. In the low-temperature region, the spin susceptibility deviates
from the Curie-Weiss-like law and finally turns to decrease with the decrease
of temperature. This spin-gap-like behavior is originating from the van Hove
singularity in the density of states.Comment: Revtex file + 11 figures, to appear in Phys. Rev.
