    Program for refan JT8D engine design, fabrication and test, phase 2

    The objective of the JT8D refan program was to design, fabricate, and test certifiable modifications of the JT8D engine which would reduce noise generated by JT8D powered aircraft. This was to be accomplished without affecting reliability and maintainability, at minimum retrofit cost, and with no performance penalty. The mechanical design, engine performance and stability characteristics at sea-level and altitude, and the engine noise characteristics of the test engines are documented. Results confirmed the structural integrity of the JT8D-109. Engine operation was stable throughout the airplane flight envelope. Fuel consumption of the test engines was higher than that required to meet the goal of no airplane performance penalty, but the causes were identified and corrected during a normal pre-certification engine development program. Compared to the baseline JT8D-109 engine, the acoustically treated JT8D-109 engine showed noise reductions of 6 PNdB at takeoff and 11 PNdB at a typical approach power setting

    Atmospheric Moisture Content Effects on Ionic Liquid Wettability of Alumina

    The contact angles or wettability of 7 Ionic Liquids, on an alumina substrate, have been measured under two different storage conditions. The first using a small amount of moisture content, the second with no moisture content. The contact angle of Ionic Liquid droplets on an alumina substrate were measured using an Attension Theta instrument with automated software. The results show that a small amount of moisture improves the wettability of the Ionic Liquid – alumina system and therefore subsequent uses of these liquids with alumina should take this into consideration

    Self-Regulation in a Web-Based Course: A Case Study

    Little is known about how successful students in Web-based courses self-regulate their learning. This descriptive case study used a social cognitive model of self-regulated learning (SRL) to investigate how six graduate students used and adapted traditional SRL strategies to complete tasks and cope with challenges in a Web-based technology course; it also explored motivational and environmental influences on strategy use. Primary data sources were three transcribed interviews with each of the students over the course of the semester, a transcribed interview with the course instructor, and the students’ reflective journals. Archived course documents, including transcripts of threaded discussions and student Web pages, were secondary data sources. Content analysis of the data indicated that these students used many traditional SRL strategies, but they also adapted planning, organization, environmental structuring, help seeking, monitoring, record keeping, and self-reflection strategies in ways that were unique to the Web-based learning environment. The data also suggested that important motivational influences on SRL strategy use—self-efficacy, goal orientation, interest, and attributions—were shaped largely by student successes in managing the technical and social environment of the course. Important environmental influences on SRL strategy use included instructor support, peer support, and course design. Implications for online course instructors and designers, and suggestions for future research are offered

    Visualizing Spacetime Curvature via Frame-Drag Vortexes and Tidal Tendexes II. Stationary Black Holes

    When one splits spacetime into space plus time, the Weyl curvature tensor (which equals the Riemann tensor in vacuum) splits into two spatial, symmetric, traceless tensors: the tidal field EE, which produces tidal forces, and the frame-drag field BB, which produces differential frame dragging. In recent papers, we and colleagues have introduced ways to visualize these two fields: tidal tendex lines (integral curves of the three eigenvector fields of EE) and their tendicities (eigenvalues of these eigenvector fields); and the corresponding entities for the frame-drag field: frame-drag vortex lines and their vorticities. These entities fully characterize the vacuum Riemann tensor. In this paper, we compute and depict the tendex and vortex lines, and their tendicities and vorticities, outside the horizons of stationary (Schwarzschild and Kerr) black holes; and we introduce and depict the black holes' horizon tendicity and vorticity (the normal-normal components of EE and BB on the horizon). For Schwarzschild and Kerr black holes, the horizon tendicity is proportional to the horizon's intrinsic scalar curvature, and the horizon vorticity is proportional to an extrinsic scalar curvature. We show that, for horizon-penetrating time slices, all these entities (EE, BB, the tendex lines and vortex lines, the lines' tendicities and vorticities, and the horizon tendicities and vorticities) are affected only weakly by changes of slicing and changes of spatial coordinates, within those slicing and coordinate choices that are commonly used for black holes.     New metric reconstruction scheme for gravitational self-force calculations

    Inspirals of stellar-mass objects into massive black holes will be important sources for the space-based gravitational-wave detector LISA. Modelling these systems requires calculating the metric perturbation due to a point particle orbiting a Kerr black hole. Currently, the linear perturbation is obtained with a metric reconstruction procedure that puts it in a "no-string" radiation gauge which is singular on a surface surrounding the central black hole. Calculating dynamical quantities in this gauge involves a subtle procedure of "gauge completion" as well as cancellations of very large numbers. The singularities in the gauge also lead to pathological field equations at second perturbative order. In this paper we re-analyze the point-particle problem in Kerr using the corrector-field reconstruction formalism of Green, Hollands, and Zimmerman (GHZ). We clarify the relationship between the GHZ formalism and previous reconstruction methods, showing that it provides a simple formula for the "gauge completion". We then use it to develop a new method of computing the metric in a more regular gauge: a Teukolsky puncture scheme. This scheme should ameliorate the problem of large cancellations, and by constructing the linear metric perturbation in a sufficiently regular gauge, it should provide a first step toward second-order self-force calculations in Kerr. Our methods are developed in generality in Kerr, but we illustrate some key ideas and demonstrate our puncture scheme in the simple setting of a static particle in Minkowski spacetime

    Charge and Orbital Ordering in Pr_{0.5} Ca_{0.5} MnO_3 Studied by ^{17}O NMR

    The charge and orbital ordering in Pr_{0.5} Ca_{0.5} MnO_3 is studied for the first time by ^{17}O NMR. This local probe is sensitive to spin, charge and orbital correlations. Two transitions exist in this system: the charge and orbital ordering at T_{CO} = 225 K and the antiferromagnetic (AF) transition at T_N = 170 K. Both are clearly seen in the NMR spectra measured in a magnetic field of 7T. Above T_{CO} there exists only one NMR line with a large isotropic shift, whose temperature dependence is in accordance with the presence of ferromagnetic (FM) correlations. This line splits into two parts below T_{CO}, which are attributed to different types of oxygen in the charge/orbital ordered state. The interplay of FM and AF spin correlations of Mn ions in the charge ordered state of Pr_{0.5} Ca_{0.5} MnO_3 is considered in terms of the hole hopping motion that is slowed down with decreasing temperature. The developing fine structure of the spectra evidences, that there still exist charge-disordered regions at T_{CO} > T > T_N and that the static (t > 10^{-6}s) orbital order is established only on approaching T_N. The CE-type magnetic correlations develop gradually below T_{CO}, so that at first the AF correlations between checkerboard ab-layers appear, and only at lower temperature - CE correlations within the ab-planes

    Visualizing Spacetime Curvature via Frame-Drag Vortexes and Tidal Tendexes III. Quasinormal Pulsations of Schwarzschild and Kerr Black Holes

    In recent papers, we and colleagues have introduced a way to visualize the full vacuum Riemann curvature tensor using frame-drag vortex lines and their vorticities, and tidal tendex lines and their tendicities. We have also introduced the concepts of horizon vortexes and tendexes and 3-D vortexes and tendexes (regions where vorticities or tendicities are large). Using these concepts, we discover a number of previously unknown features of quasinormal modes of Schwarzschild and Kerr black holes. These modes can be classified by mode indexes (n,l,m), and parity, which can be electric [(-1)^l] or magnetic [(-1)^(l+1)]. Among our discoveries are these: (i) There is a near duality between modes of the same (n,l,m): a duality in which the tendex and vortex structures of electric-parity modes are interchanged with the vortex and tendex structures (respectively) of magnetic-parity modes. (ii) This near duality is perfect for the modes' complex eigenfrequencies (which are well known to be identical) and perfect on the horizon; it is slightly broken in the equatorial plane of a non-spinning hole, and the breaking becomes greater out of the equatorial plane, and greater as the hole is spun up; but even out of the plane for fast-spinning holes, the duality is surprisingly good. (iii) Electric-parity modes can be regarded as generated by 3-D tendexes that stick radially out of the horizon. As these "longitudinal," near-zone tendexes rotate or oscillate, they generate longitudinal-transverse near-zone vortexes and tendexes, and outgoing and ingoing gravitational waves. The ingoing waves act back on the longitudinal tendexes, driving them to slide off the horizon, which results in decay of the mode's strength. (iv) By duality, magnetic-parity modes are driven in this same manner by longitudinal, near-zone vortexes that stick out of the horizon.     PTSD symptoms and cortisol stress reactivity in adolescence: Findings from a high adversity cohort in South Africa

    BACKGROUND: Dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is implicated in the pathophysiology of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, there has been little study of HPA stress reactivity in association with PTSD symptoms (PTSS) in children; and there is limited research on PTSD in low and middle-income countries, where trauma exposure is more common and co-occurring stressors more likely. METHOD: We assessed the relationship between PTSS and cortisol stress reactivity in children aged 13 years (N = 291) from an impoverished South African community. HPA axis stress reactivity was indexed by salivary cortisol during the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST). RESULTS: In regression analyses both trauma exposure and PTSS showed small inverse associations with total cortisol output (area under the curve with respect to ground) during the TSST, but PTSS effects did not withstand correction for covariates. In addition, hierarchical linear modelling (HLM) found that PTSS were associated with alterations in the shape of the profile of cortisol reactivity that were moderated by sex. In girls, PTSS were associated with reduced linear slope but larger quadratic slopes, whereas the opposite pattern was found in boys. Thus, elevated PTSS were associated with overall blunted profiles of cortisol stress reactivity in girls, but a larger quadratic slope in boys reflects a steeper cortisol increase and decline in boys. There was no relationship between trauma exposure (with or without PTSS) and cortisol reactivity profiles in HLM analyses. CONCLUSION: In children from a high adversity, low and middle income country context, sex specific associations were found between PTSS and cortisol responses to psychosocial stress. Further research should probe HPA axis functioning more comprehensively in such populations to understand the biological associations of PTSS
