The calculation work performed during the 3rd project year in WP2 as well as the R&D activities carried out in WP3, WP4 and WP5 are described in this report. In addition, the work dedicated to the project management (WP1) as well as to WP6 regarding the dissemination/communication activities and the education/training program (e.g. the follow-up of the mobility program between different organizations in the consortium, training on simulation tools and activities accomplished by PhD/post-doctoral students) is also reported

Of girly girls and bad boys - an analysis of imbalanced heterosexual relationship dynamics in young adult fantasy novels

Literatur spielt eine wichtige Rolle in der Sozialisation Jugendlicher, da sie jungen Männern und Frauen Informationen über Geschlechterrollen und sexuelle Rollen liefert. Daher ist es wichtig, Darstellungen von Sexualität und sozial konstruierten Geschlechtern in der Literatur junger Erwachsener zu analysieren, um ideologische Hintergründe dieser Bücher sichtbar zu machen. Unter Bezugnahme einer Vielzahl von Theorien, unter anderem Raewyn Connells Konzept der hegemonialen Männlichkeit, Martha Nussbaums Objektivierungstheorie und Robert Sternbergs Dreieckstheorie der Liebe, untersucht die vorliegende Diplomarbeit, wie die weibliche Protagonistin im Vergleich zu den beiden um ihre Liebe buhlenden männlichen Charakteren dargestellt wird. Zwei populäre Jugendbuchreihen aus dem Fantasygenre werden hierfür beleuchtet: Cassandra Clares Chroniken der Unterwelt (2007-2014) und Sarah J. Maas Das Reich der sieben Höfe (2015-2017). Eine Analyse dieser Romane zeigt, dass heterosexuelle Paare als Norm etabliert und propagiert werden, während andere sexuelle Orientierungen und Beziehungsstrukturen entweder nicht vorkommen, oder nur am Rand der Handlung stereotyp dargestellt werden, wodurch diese in ihrer Rolle als ‘das Andere’ bestätigt werden und die heteronormative Ordnung insgesamt legitimiert wird. Sobald die körperlich starken Protagonistinnen auf die jungen, hegemonialen und dominanten Männerfiguren treffen, verlieben sie sich rasch und werden durch mehr oder weniger subtile Manipulation und körperlichen, verbalen und emotionalen Missbrauch in unterwürfige Rollen gedrängt. Darüber hinaus sind die weiblichen Charaktere sexueller Objektivierung ausgesetzt, was sie zu passiven Objekten der Begierde degradiert. Dennoch werden diese toxischen Beziehungen romantisiert und als schicksalhafte, positive Verbindungen hervorgehoben. Dies könnte vor allem junge Leserinnen dazu verleiten, ähnliche, gegen Gleichberechtigung arbeitende, Beziehungsstrukturen in ihrem eigenen Leben zu akzeptieren.Literature plays an important role in the socialisation of today’s youth, also educating young men and women how to behave as sexual beings. It is therefore important to examine depictions of gender and sexuality in order to uncover the ideological underpinnings thereof. Drawing on a wide array of theories, including Raewyn Connell’s concept of hegemonic masculinity, Martha Nussbaum’s objectification theory, and Robert Sternberg’s triangular theory of love, this thesis aims to examine how the female protagonist is depicted compared to the two male characters competing for her affection. Two popular young adult fantasy series form the objects of analysis: Cassandra Clare’s The Mortal Instruments (2007-2014) and Sarah J. Maas’s A Court of Thorns and Roses (2015-2017). A close reading of these novels reveals that heterosexual pairings are established and promoted as the norm, while other forms of sexuality are either omitted or only marginally and stereotypically addressed, thereby establishing them as ‘the Other’, overall reinforcing the heteronormative order. The physically strong female protagonists quickly lose their agency as soon as they meet the hegemonic male characters that manipulate and physically, verbally, or emotionally abuse the former into more submissive roles. Moreover, the female characters are subjected to sexual objectification, rendering them passive objects of desire, while the men remain active agents of the story. Yet, these pairings are purported to be romantic, fated and indispensable to the young protagonists’ lives, perpetuating the idea that young readers ought to accept or even strive for similarly imbalanced relationships in their lives

Do black lives matter to Chinese Americans?

Chinesische Immigration und Polizeigewalt gegen African Americans sind allgegenwärtige Phänomene in Geschichte und Gegenwart der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika. Vor diesem Hintergrund möchte diese Master-Arbeit das Verhältnis zwischen Chinese Americans und African Americans näher beleuchten. Ausgehend von der Berichterstattung über zwei Fälle, bei denen im Juli 2016 zwei afroamerikanische Männer erschossen wurden und die ausgedehnte Proteste nach sich zogen, soll anhand einer hauptsächlich auf Teun A. van Dijks theoretischem und methodischem Ansatz basierenden Diskursanalyse untersucht werden, wie sich chinesisch-sprachige US-amerikanische Tageszeitungen gegenüber der schwarzen Bevölkerung in den USA als Opfer von Polizeigewalt positionieren. Dabei konnte festgestellt werden, dass das World Journal dazu tendiert, African Americans als Verbündete der Wir-Gruppe, die als Asian Americans und nicht nur Chinese Americans definiert ist, zu sehen, gleichzeitig jedoch Wert auf Gesetzestreue und friedliche Demonstrationen gegen Missstände legt. Die China Press hingegen neigt dazu, sich als Chinese Americans auf die Seite der Polizei zu stellen, wobei jedoch bei beiden Tageszeitungen ein klares Bewusstsein darüber zum Ausdruck kommt, dass ein auf race basierendes, systematisches Problem von Polizeigewalt gegen African Americans in den USA besteht, welches so auch an die sinoamerikanische Leserschaft in den USA weitergegeben wird

This article discusses previously unnoticed allusions to late antique authors in Donatus’ openingletter, which shed light on Donatus’ erudition and his skilful use of prefatory-topoi for his captatio benevolentiae. The second part of this article deals with the lost index of contents and the manifold problems concerning the number of Capitula of Donatus’ Regula

The following article focuses on aspects of the textual transmission of Ambrose’s De obitu Theodosii. It examines the content of (the fragmentary) manuscript Ferrara, Bibl. com. Ariostea Cl. II. 238, not known to the former editor of the speech, which is an interesting new witness of the text, and discusses its value for establishing the text of the speech, but also of Epistula extra collectionem 1 (the manuscript could have preserved original readings of this Epistula, not known so far, discussed below). Furthermore, the article sheds light on the interrelation of two important Milanese manuscripts transmitting De obitu Theodosii (Bibl. Ambrosian. B 54 inf. and I 71 sup.) and asks, if manuscript Bologna, Bibl. univ. 2531 (neglected by the former editor) could help to learn more about the text of manuscript Köln, Erzbischöfl.
