    Transverse energy production and charged-particle multiplicity at midrapidity in various systems from sNN=7.7\sqrt{s_{NN}}=7.7 to 200 GeV

    Measurements of midrapidity charged particle multiplicity distributions, dNch/dηdN_{\rm ch}/d\eta, and midrapidity transverse-energy distributions, dET/dηdE_T/d\eta, are presented for a variety of collision systems and energies. Included are distributions for Au++Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200, 130, 62.4, 39, 27, 19.6, 14.5, and 7.7 GeV, Cu++Cu collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 and 62.4 GeV, Cu++Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV, U++U collisions at sNN=193\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=193 GeV, dd++Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV, 3^{3}He++Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV, and pp++pp collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV. Centrality-dependent distributions at midrapidity are presented in terms of the number of nucleon participants, NpartN_{\rm part}, and the number of constituent quark participants, NqpN_{q{\rm p}}. For all AA++AA collisions down to sNN=7.7\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=7.7 GeV, it is observed that the midrapidity data are better described by scaling with NqpN_{q{\rm p}} than scaling with NpartN_{\rm part}. Also presented are estimates of the Bjorken energy density, εBJ\varepsilon_{\rm BJ}, and the ratio of dET/dηdE_T/d\eta to dNch/dηdN_{\rm ch}/d\eta, the latter of which is seen to be constant as a function of centrality for all systems.Comment: 706 authors, 32 pages, 20 figures, 34 tables, 2004, 2005, 2008, 2010, 2011, and 2012 data. v2 is version accepted for publication in Phys.     Inclusive cross section and double-helicity asymmetry for π0\pi^{0} production at midrapidity in pp++pp collisions at s=510\sqrt{s}=510 GeV

    PHENIX measurements are presented for the cross section and double-helicity asymmetry (ALLA_{LL}) in inclusive π0\pi^0 production at midrapidity from pp++pp collisions at s=510\sqrt{s}=510~GeV from data taken in 2012 and 2013 at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The next-to-leading-order perturbative-quantum-chromodynamics theory calculation is in excellent agreement with the presented cross section results. The calculation utilized parton-to-pion fragmentation functions from the recent DSS14 global analysis, which prefer a smaller gluon-to-pion fragmentation function. The π0ALL\pi^{0}A_{LL} results follow an increasingly positive asymmetry trend with pTp_T and s\sqrt{s} with respect to the predictions and are in excellent agreement with the latest global analysis results. This analysis incorporated earlier results on π0\pi^0 and jet ALLA_{LL}, and suggested a positive contribution of gluon polarization to the spin of the proton ΔG\Delta G for the gluon momentum fraction range x>0.05x>0.05. The data presented here extend to a currently unexplored region, down to x0.01x\sim0.01, and thus provide additional constraints on the value of ΔG\Delta G. The results confirm the evidence for nonzero ΔG\Delta G using a different production channel in a complementary kinematic region.Comment: 413 authors, 8 pages, 4 figures. v2 is version accepted as PRD Rapid Communication.     Production of π0\pi^0 and η\eta mesons in U++U collisions at sNN=192\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=192 GeV

    The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider measured π0\pi^0 and η\eta mesons at midrapidity in U++U collisions at sNN=192\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=192 GeV in a wide transverse momentum range. Measurements were performed in the π0(η)γγ\pi^0(\eta)\rightarrow\gamma\gamma decay modes. A strong suppression of π0\pi^0 and η\eta meson production at high transverse momentum was observed in central U++U collisions relative to binary scaled pp++pp results. Yields of π0\pi^0 and η\eta mesons measured in U++U collisions show similar suppression pattern to the ones measured in Au++Au collisions at sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV for similar numbers of participant nucleons. The η\eta/π0\pi^0 ratios do not show dependence on centrality or transverse momentum, and are consistent with previously measured values in hadron-hadron, hadron-nucleus, nucleus-nucleus, and e+ee^+e^- collisions.Comment: 403 authors from 72 institutions, 13 pages, 6 figures, 7 tables, 2012 data. v2 is version accepted by Physical Review C.
