    Maximum Order of Periodic Outer Automorphisms of a Free Group

    AbstractLet Fn be a free group with rank n, and denote by OutFn its outer automorphism group. For arbitrary n, consider the orders of periodic elements in OutFn or, equivalently, the orders of finite cyclic subgroups of OutFn. By considering group actions on finite connected graphs, we obtained the number-theoretical characterization of these orders. Comparing the results with those for cyclic subgroups of finite symmetric groups asymptotic estimation for the maximum order cn is derived

    Daucosterol pretreatment ameliorates myocardial ischemia reperfusion injury via ROS-mediated NLRP3 inflammasome activation

    Purpose: To determine the involvement of NLRP3 signaling pathway in the preventive role of daucosterol in acute myocardial infarction (AMI).Methods: H9C2 cells were pretreated with daucosterol before hypoxia/reoxygenation (HR) injury. Myocardial ischemia reperfusion (IR) was established in male SD rats, followed by reperfusion. Myocardial infarct size was measured. The serum levels of creatine kinase (CK), lactate  dehydrogenase (LDH), total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD), and malondialdehyde (MDA) were determined using commercial kits. NLRP3 inflammasome activation was assessed by western blotting.Results: Myocardial infarct size was smaller after IR injury in rats pretreated with daucosterol (10 and 50 mg/kg) than that pretreated with daucosterol (0 and 1 mg/kg). The increase in LDH, CK, and MDA levels after IR injury was reduced following daucosterol pretreatment. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) production increased, whereas T-SOD activity decreased after IR injury. These changes were prevented by pretreatment of daucosterol (10 and 50 mg/kg). Protein expression of NLRP3 inflammasome increased after IR injury in H9C2 cells while pretreatment with daucosterol inhibited the upregulation of NLRP3 inflammasome.Conclusion: The cardioprotective effect of daucosterol pretreatment appears to be mediated via the inactivation of ROS-related NLRP3 inflammasome, suggesting that daucosteol might be a potential therapeutic drug for AMI.     Incommensurate itinerant antiferromagnetic excitations and spin resonance in the FeTe0.6_{0.6}Se0.4_{0.4} superconductor

    We report on inelastic neutron scattering measurements that find incommensurate itinerant like magnetic excitations in the normal state of superconducting FeTe0.6_{0.6}Se0.4_{0.4} (\Tc=14K) at wave-vector Qinc=(1/2±ϵ,1/2ϵ)\mathbf{Q}_{inc}=(1/2\pm\epsilon,1/2\mp\epsilon) with ϵ\epsilon=0.09(1). In the superconducting state only the lower energy part of the spectrum shows significant changes by the formation of a gap and a magnetic resonance that follows the dispersion of the normal state excitations. We use a four band model to describe the Fermi surface topology of iron-based superconductors with the extended s(±)s(\pm) symmetry and find that it qualitatively captures the salient features of these data.Comment: 7 pages and 5 figure

    The laser additive manufacturing technique of laser deposition allows quick fabrication of fully-dense metallic components directly from Computer Aided Design (CAD) solid models. The applications of laser deposition include rapid prototyping, rapid tooling and part refurbishment. The development of an accurate predictive model for laser deposition is extremely complicated due to the multitude of process parameters and materials properties involved. In this work, a heat transfer and fluid flow model is developed. The model is used to predict dilution under varying process parameters for deposits of Ti-6Al-4V.     Numerical Simulation of the Evolution of Solidification Microstructure in Laser Deposition

    A predictive model is developed to simulate the evolution of the solidification microstructure during the laser deposition process. The microstructure model is coupled with a comprehensive macroscopic thermodynamic model. This model simulates dendritic grain structures and morphological evolution in solidification. Based on the cellular automata approach, this microstructure model takes into account the heterogeneous nucleation both within the melt pool and at the substrate/melt interface, the growth kinetics, and preferential growth directions of dendrites. Both diffusion and convection effects are included. This model enables prediction and visualization of grain structures during and after the deposition process. This model is applied to Ti-6Al-4V

    Spin Gap and Resonance at the Nesting Wavevector in Superconducting FeSe0.4Te0.6

    Neutron scattering is used to probe magnetic excitations in FeSe_{0.4}Te_{0.6} (T_c=14 K). Low energy spin fluctuations are found with a characteristic wave vector (0.5,0.5,L)(0.5,0.5,L) that corresponds to Fermi surface nesting and differs from Q_m=(\delta,0,0.5) for magnetic ordering in Fe_{1+y}Te. A spin resonance with \hbar\Omega_0=6.5 meV \approx 5.3 k_BT_c and \hbar\Gamma=1.25 meV develops in the superconducting state from a normal state continuum. We show that the resonance is consistent with a bound state associated with s+/- superconductivity and imperfect quasi-2D Fermi surface nesting.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, Submitted to Phys. Rev.     High level soluble expression, one-step purification and characterization of HIV-1 p24 protein

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>P24 protein is the major core protein of HIV virus particle and has been suggested as a specific target for antiviral strategies. Recombinant p24 protein with natural antigenic activity would be useful for various studies, such as diagnostic reagents and multi-component HIV vaccine development. The aim of this study was to express and purify the p24 protein in soluble form in <it>E.coli</it>.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>According to the sequence of the p24 gene, a pair of primers was designed, and the target sequence of 700 bp was amplified using PCR. The PCR product was cloned into pQE30 vector, generating the recombinant plasmid pQE30-p24. SDS-PAGE analysis showed that the His-tagged recombinant p24 protein was highly expressed in soluble form after induction in <it>E. coli </it>strain BL21. The recombinant protein was purified by nickel affinity chromatography and used to react with HIV infected sera. The results showed that the recombinant p24 protein could specifically react with the HIV infected sera. To study the immunogenicity of this soluble recombinant p24 protein, it was used to immunize mice for the preparation of polyclonal antibody. Subsequent ELISA and Western-Blot analysis demonstrated that the p24 protein had proper immunogenicity in inducing mice to produce HIV p24 specific antibodies.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>In this work, we report the high level soluble expression of HIV-1 p24 protein in <it>E. coli</it>. This soluble recombinant p24 protein specifically react with HIV infected sera and elicit HIV p24 specific antibodies in mice, indicating this soluble recombinant p24 protein could be a promising reagent for HIV diagnosis.</p

    Molecular Characterization and Antimicrobial Susceptibility of Nasal Staphylococcus aureus Isolates from a Chinese Medical College Campus

    Staphylococcus aureus colonization and infection occur more commonly among persons living or working in crowded conditions, but characterization of S. aureus colonization within medical communities in China is lacking. A total of 144 (15.4%, 144/935) S. aureus isolates, including 28 (3.0%, 28/935) MRSA isolates, were recovered from the nares of 935 healthy human volunteers residing on a Chinese medical college campus. All S. aureus isolates were susceptible to vancomycin, quinupristin/dalfopristin and linezolid but the majority were resistant to penicillin (96.5%), ampicillin/sulbactam (83.3%) and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (93.1%). 82%, (23/28) of the MRSA isolates and 66% (77/116) of the MSSA isolates were resistant to multiple antibiotics, and 3 MRSA isolates were resistant to mupirocin—an agent commonly used for nasal decolonization. 16 different sequence types (STs), as well as SCCmec genes II, III, IVd, and V, were represented among MRSA isolates. We also identified, for the first time, two novel STs (ST1778 and ST1779) and 5 novel spa types for MRSA. MRSA isolates were distributed in different sporadic clones, and ST59-MRSA-VId- t437 was found within 3 MRSA isolates. Moreover, one isolate with multidrug resistance belonging to ST398-MRSA-V- t571 associated with animal infections was identified, and 3 isolates distributed in three different clones harbored PVL genes. Collectively, these data indicate a high prevalence of nasal MRSA carriage and molecular heterogeneity of S. aureus isolates among persons residing on a Chinese medical college campus. Identification of epidemic MRSA clones associated with community infection supports the need for more effective infection control measures to reduce nasal carriage and prevent dissemination of MRSA to hospitalized patients and health care workers in this community
