Planar unclustered scale-free graphs as models for technological and biological networks
Many real life networks present an average path length logarithmic with the
number of nodes and a degree distribution which follows a power law. Often
these networks have also a modular and self-similar structure and, in some
cases - usually associated with topological restrictions- their clustering is
low and they are almost planar. In this paper we introduce a family of graphs
which share all these properties and are defined by two parameters. As their
construction is deterministic, we obtain exact analytic expressions for
relevant properties of the graphs including the degree distribution, degree
correlation, diameter, and average distance, as a function of the two defining
parameters. Thus, the graphs are useful to model some complex networks, in
particular several families of technological and biological networks, and in
the design of new practical communication algorithms in relation to their
dynamical processes. They can also help understanding the underlying mechanisms
that have produced their particular structure.Comment: Accepted for publication in Physica
What do parents think, and do, about their children’s online privacy?
Debates about personal data and online privacy often make assumptions about parents’ digital skills and sharing practices, how they view their children’s online privacy, and whether parents have the skills to translate concerns about privacy into practical action. This report, the third in a series, is based on a nationally representative survey of 2032 UK parents of children aged 0-17 years old. We examine how UK parents view their own and their children’s digital privacy, whether and how they share images of their children online, and how they negotiate new norms about parents’ roles in supporting their child’s safety and fostering their independence online

Enhanced anticancer activity of 5\u27-DFUR-PCL-MPEG polymeric prodrug micelles encapsulating chemotherapeutic drugs
The compound 5’-deoxy-5-fluorouridine (5’-DFUR) is a prodrug of the anti-tumor drug 5-fluorouracil (5-FU). Thymidine phosphorylase (TP) is an enzyme that can convert 5’-DFUR to its active form 5-FU and the expression of TP is upregulated in various cancer cells. In this study, 5’-DFUR associated with amphiphilic copolymer poly(ε-caprolactone)-methoxy poly(ethylene glycol) (5’-DFUR-PCL-MPEG) was synthesized, characterized, and self-assembled into functional polymeric micelles. To demonstrate that the prodrug 5’-DFUR could convert into cytotoxic 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) by endogenous TP, HT-29 colorectal cancer cells were treated with 5’-DFUR-PCL-MPEG polymeric micelles for various time periods. Chemotherapeutic drugs doxorubicin (DOX) and 7-ethyl-10-hydroxycamptothecin (SN-38) were also encapsulated separately into 5’-DFUR-PCL-MPEG polymeric micelles to create a dual drug-loaded system. HT-29 cells were treated with DOX or SN-38 encapsulated 5’-DFUR-PCL-MPEG polymeric micelles to examine the efficacy of dual drug-loaded micelles. As a result, HT-29 cells treated with 5’-DFUR-PCL-MPEG polymeric micelles showed up to 40% cell death rate after a 72-h treatment. In contrast, HT-29 cells challenged with DOX or SN-38 encapsulated 5’-DFUR-incorporated polymeric micelles showed 36% and 31% in cell viability after a 72-h treatment, respectively
Layered composite entangled wire materials blocks as pre-tensioned vertebral rocking columns
This work focuses on entangled wire materials as an option for use between segments of a novel self-centring bridge pier inspired from the human spine mechanism to increase energy dissipation capability of the pier in rocking. A comprehensive set of free-decay vibration tests was conducted on small-scale columns with and without entangled wire materials. Wooden blocks are used as vertebrae with entangled wire materials as intervertebral disks. The whole system is tied together using a pre-tensioned tendon. Dynamic properties of columns (i.e. frequency and damping ratio) were then identified and compared. It is found that the use of entangled wire materials significantly increases the energy dissipation capacity of the system during rocking. This finding is very encouraging for future use of entangled wire materials composite systems in large-scale testing of the proposed rocking column, while their shear and axial stiffness needs be improved to reduce large shear and axial deformations
Polymeric Nanovectors Incorporated with Ganciclovir and HSV-tk Encoding Plasmid for Gene-Directed Enzyme Prodrug Therapy
In the area of gene-directed enzyme prodrug therapy (GDEPT), using herpes simplex virus thymidine kinase (HSV-tk) paired with prodrug ganciclovir (GCV) for cancer treatment has been extensively studied. It is a process involved with two steps whereby the gene (HSV-tk) is first delivered to malignant cells. Afterward, non-toxic GCV is administered to that site and activated to cytotoxic ganciclovir triphosphate by HSV-tk enzyme expressed exogenously. In this study, we presented a one-step approach that both gene and prodrug were delivered at the same time by incorporating them with polymeric micellar nanovectors. GCV was employed as an initiator in the ring-opening polymerization of ε-caprolactone (ε-CL) to synthesize hydrophobic GCV-poly(caprolactone) (GCV-PCL), which was furthered grafted with hydrophilic chitosan to obtain amphiphilic polymer (GCV-PCL-chitosan) for the fabrication of self-assembled micellar nanoparticles. The synthesized amphiphilic polymer was characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and proton nuclear magnetic resonance. Micellar prodrug nanoparticles were analyzed by dynamic light scattering, zeta potential, critical micelle concentration, and transmission electron microscopy. Polymeric prodrug micelles with optimal features incorporated with HSV-tk encoding plasmids were cultivated with HT29 colorectal cancer cells and anticancer effectiveness was determined. Our results showed that prodrug GCV and HSV-tk cDNA encoded plasmid incorporated in GCV-PCL-chitosan polymeric nanocarriers could be delivered in a one-step manner to HT-29 cells and triggered high cytotoxicity
The CMU Statistical Machine Translation System
In this paper we describe the components of our statistical machine translation system. This system combines phrase-to-phrase translations extracted from a bilingual corpus using different alignment approaches. Special methods to extract and align named entities are used. We show how a manual lexicon can be incorporated into the statistical system in an optimized way. Experiments on Chinese-to-English and Arabic-to-English translation tasks are presented
