    4H-SiC MESFET with darin-side and undoped region for modifying charge distribution and high power applications

    In this paper, a novel MESFET with an undoped region (DS-UR) and drain side-double recessed 4H-SiC metal semiconductor field effect transistor (MESFET) is presented. The key idea in this work is to modify the charge concentration and electric field distribution to improving breakdown voltage (VBR) and the maximum output power density (Pmax). The charge distribution plays an important role in determining device characteristics. Two-dimensional and two-carrier device simulation demonstrate that the VBR and Pmax are improved about 57% and 50% compared to source side-double recessed 4H-SiC MESFET (SS) structure, respectively which are important for high power applications

    Sexual-Reproductive Health Belief Model of college students

    Sexual- reproductive health of youth is one of the most unknown aspects of our community, while the world, including our country is faced with the risk of AIDS spreading. The aim of this study was to describe Health Belief Model (HBM) of the students about sexual-reproductive health behaviors and evaluate the ability of the model in predicting related behaviors. By using quota sampling, 1117 male and female students of Qazvin Medical Science and International universities were included in the study in 1991. A self-completed questionnaire was prepared containing close questions based on HBM components including perceived threats (susceptibility and severity) of related diseases, perceived reproductive benefits and barriers and self efficacy of youth about reproductive health. A total of 645 of participants were female and 457 were male (Mean age 21.4±2.4 and 22.7±3.5, respectively). The Health Belief Model of the students showed that they perceived a moderate threat for AIDS and venereal diseases and their health outcomes. Most of them perceived the benefits of reproductive health behaviors. They believed that the ability of youth in considering reproductive health is low or moderate. However, they noted to some barriers for spreading of reproductive health in youth including inadequacy of services. Boys felt a higher level of threat for acquiring the AIDS and venereal diseases in compare to girls, but girls had a higher knowledge about these diseases and their complications. The Health Belief Model of the students with premarital intercourse behavior was not significantly different with the students without this behavior (Mann-Withney, P<0.05). Female students and the students without the history of premarital intercourse had significantly more positive attitude towards abstinence, comparing to male students and students with the history of premarital intercourse, respectively (Mann-Withney, P<0.05). Seventy five percent of students believed in respecting to ethics as the best way of prevention of AIDS and venereal diseases. HBM was successful in describing the students’ beliefs about reproductive health and related disease. However, it seemed that HBM had a limited capability in predicting reproductive health behaviors, at least for students and/or in our community. Regarding to the positive attitude of most students toward abstinence, especially among female students, it seemed that socio-cultural components are more important than threats for AIDS and venereal diseases. ‏Therefore, developing HBM by integrating the model by related cultural components is recommende

    Effect of 12 weeks of light and heavy interval training on the level of irisin and fibroblast growth factor 21 in obese and overweight women: A clinical trial study

    Background and Objective: Increasing the cost of energy in obesity preventing and treating and reducing its complications can be achieved by stimulating the factors including Irisin and FGF21 associated with browning of the white adipose tissue. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of 12 weeks of light and heavy interval exercises on the level of irisin and FGF21 in obese and overweight women. Methods: This clinical traial study was done on 35 overweight and obese women (39.8±3.85 years old and body mass index 27.1±3.37 kg/m2). The subjects were divided randomly into three groups of interval exercises including Heavy (n=12), light (n=12), and control (n=11) groups. The training program included 12 weeks of heavy and light interval exercises for 25 to 60 minutes per session and three sessions per week. Before and after the training period, irisin and FGF21 serum indices were measured for each subject. Results: Serum level of FGF21 increased only after 12 weeks of heavy interval training (P<0.05). However, there was no change in serum irisin levels after both heavy and light interval exercises. Body fat percentage, waist to hip ratio, and BMI Subjects of light and heavy interval exercises reduced and VO2max increased significantly compared to control group (P<0.05). Conclusion: 12 weeks of low and heavy interval training without altering serum levels of irisin have a beneficial effect on increasing VO2max and improving body composition. Also, heavy interval training has a significant increase in FGF21, Which can be effective in weight loss through the browning of white adipose tissue

    Assessment of incremental lifetime cancer risks of ambient air PM10-bound PAHs in oil-rich cities of Iran

    This study investigates the concentrations of PM10-bound PAHs and their seasonal variations in three cities of Ahvaz, Abadan, and Asaluyeh in Iran. The mean concentrations of PM10 in two warm and cold seasons in Ahvaz were higher and in Abadan and Assaluyeh were lower than the national standard of Iran and the guidelines of the World Health Organization. The Σ16 PAHs concentration in ambient air PM10 during the cold season in Ahvaz, Abadan and Asaluyeh was 244.6, 633, and 909 ng m− 3, respectively, and during the warm season in Ahvaz, Abadan, and Asaluyeh was 242.1, 1570 and 251 ng m− 3, respectively. The high molecular weight PAHs were the most predominant components. The most abundant PAHs species were Pyr, Chr, B [ghi] P, and Flt. The results showed that the total PAHs concentration in the cold and warm seasons was dependent on industrial activities, particularly the neighboring petrochemical units of the city, vehicular exhausts, traffic and use of oil, gas, and coal in energy production. The total cancer risk values as a result of exposure to PAHs in ambient air PM10 in all three cities for children and adults and in both cold and warm seasons were between 1 × 10− 6 and 1 × 10− 4, and this indicates a potential carcinogenic risk. Therefore, considering the various sources of air pollutants and its role on people’s health, decision makers should adopt appropriate policies on air quality to reduce the ambient air PAHs and to mitigate human exposure

    SARS-CoV-2 and Stroke Characteristics: A Report From the Multinational COVID-19 Stroke Study Group

    International audienceBackground and Purpose: Stroke is reported as a consequence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection in several reports. However, data are sparse regarding the details of these patients in a multinational and large scale. Methods: We conducted a multinational observational study on features of consecutive acute ischemic stroke, intracranial hemorrhage, and cerebral venous or sinus thrombosis among SARS-CoV-2–infected patients. We further investigated the risk of large vessel occlusion, stroke severity as measured by the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale, and stroke subtype as measured by the TOAST (Trial of ORG 10172 in Acute Stroke Treatment) criteria among patients with acute ischemic stroke. In addition, we explored the neuroimaging findings, features of patients who were asymptomatic for SARS-CoV-2 infection at stroke onset, and the impact of geographic regions and countries’ health expenditure on outcomes. Results: Among the 136 tertiary centers of 32 countries who participated in this study, 71 centers from 17 countries had at least 1 eligible stroke patient. Of 432 patients included, 323 (74.8%) had acute ischemic stroke, 91 (21.1%) intracranial hemorrhage, and 18 (4.2%) cerebral venous or sinus thrombosis. A total of 183 (42.4%) patients were women, 104 (24.1%) patients were <55 years of age, and 105 (24.4%) patients had no identifiable vascular risk factors. Among acute ischemic stroke patients, 44.5% (126 of 283 patients) had large vessel occlusion; 10% had small artery occlusion according to the TOAST criteria. We observed a lower median National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (8 [3–17] versus 11 [5–17]; P =0.02) and higher rate of mechanical thrombectomy (12.4% versus 2%; P <0.001) in countries with middle-to-high health expenditure when compared with countries with lower health expenditure. Among 380 patients who had known interval onset of the SARS-CoV-2 and stroke, 144 (37.8%) were asymptomatic at the time of admission for SARS-CoV-2 infection. Conclusions: We observed a considerably higher rate of large vessel occlusions, a much lower rate of small vessel occlusion and lacunar infarction, and a considerable number of young stroke when compared with the population studies before the pandemic.
