The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of five nitrogen doses on the productive and quality characteristics and the use efficiency of Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu grass. The treatments consisted of four doses of nitrogen (0, 60, 120, 180 and 240 kg ha-1), distributed through a completely randomized design with four replicates. Samples of the material were collected to analyze productivity variables, concentrations of neutral detergent fiber, crude protein and neutral detergent insoluble nitrogen, and in vitro dry matter digestibility. The nitrogen use efficiency, recovery of the applied nitrogen (RAN) and agronomic efficiency of the applied nitrogen (AE) were calculated. Dry mass production increased by 1,624.67 (kg/ha) as the nitrogen doses were increased. The doses of nitrogen affected the concentrations of neutral detergent fiber (from 294.6 to 381.4 g.kg-1, in the leaf), crude protein (from 86.1 to 99.6 g.kg-1, in the leaf) and neutral detergent insoluble protein (from 402.9 to 396.2 g.kg-1 CP, in the leaf). Nitrogen use efficiency increased, whereas RAN and AE were not affected by the nitrogen doses. Nitrogen fertilization promotes improvement in productivity and chemical composition of Marandu grass, also improving the efficiency with which the grass utilizes the nitrogen

The objective of this work was to determine the kinetic parameters of the dry matter in situ degradation, crude protein and neutral detergent fiber for corn silage, elephant-grass silage, Tifton-85 grass hay and soybean meal. Three rumen canulated cattle were used, with mean liveweight of 400 kg. Feeds were weighted in naylon bags, and incubated in the rumen at once. Roughages were removed at 0, 2, 4, 8, 16, 24, 48 and 72 hours, and soybean meal at 0, 2, 4, 8, 16, 24 and 48 hours after incubation. Residues in the bags were analyzed for dry matter, crude protein and neutral detergent fiber. Dry matter and crude protein of soybean meal presented highly degradable potential, as well as crude protein of corn silage. Tifton-85 grass hay presented high indigestible neutral detergent fiber fraction and therefore, low potential dry matter degradation. Amount of the neutral detergent fiber and its kinetic characteristic has a marked effect on digestion of feeds

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of different lipid sources in diets for lactating cows on milk yield and composition, conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) content, and fatty acid profile in the milk fat. Five primiparous Holstein cows were distributed in a 5 × 5 Latin square design. Treatments were: control (no lipid addition) and four other diets containing different lipids sources - ground raw soybean, cottonseed, soybean oil, and calcium salts of soybean fatty acids (CSSFA). The greater milk yield (kg/day) and milk lactose (g/kg) and solids non-fat (g/kg) contents were obtained with the animals fed diets with CSSFA. Regarding the fatty acid profile in the milk fat, the diets with CSSFA and ground raw soybeans produced the greatest concentrations of polyunsaturated fatty acids and C182. Supplementation with CSSFA provided a greater production (g/day) of CLA, resulting in almost twice the values shown by the other treatments. The use of different lipid sources does not affect the milk total solids (protein, fat, and lactose) and CSSFA has a positive influence on the fatty acid profile of the milk fat and amount of CLA produced. Additionally, milk yield is not affected by this supplement

<p>The objective was to evaluate thein take and digestibility of nutrients, ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N) in the rumen and serum urea nitrogen (BUN) in Nellore heifers in grass Marandu recreated during the transition period dry energy supplement receiving waters, protein and multiple. We used four heifers with average body weight and initial age of 189.5 kg and 12 months respectively, distributed in four paddocks of 0.25 ha each. The design was a 4x4 Latin square (four supplements and four periods of 14 days). The supplements were: energy supplement (ES) protein (PS) and multiple (MS), provided the amount of 1 kg animal day-1 in addition to supplement containing commercial mineral mixture ad libitum (MM). The concentrate supplementation did not increase intakes of dry matter, total organic matter and forage. The additional SP provided greater (P&lt;0,0001) intake of crude protein (CP). The SE and SP supplement resulted ingreater ether extract intake. The CP was higher (P&lt;0.0001) in animals supplemented with SP and SM. Immediately before and four hours after supplementation higher concentrations of ruminal NH3-N were observed for the SM and SP supplements. There were no differences for ser um urea nitrogen (BUN). The use of protein supplement and multiple provided the best fit of the rumen of heifers during the transition period dry-rainy fed on grasses Marandu environment.</p

The objective of this study was to present some factors affecting feed efficiency in dairy goats. To develop our work, individual and average data from performance experiments with lactating goats were used. The following variables were evaluated: gross feed efficiency, adjusted feed efficiency, dry matter intake, milk-yield, 3.5% fat-corrected milk yield, dry matter digestibility, dietary neutral detergent fiber content, different roughage-to-concentrate ratios and body weight. The statistical analyses involved the application of descriptive and dispersion measures besides Pearson's correlation coefficient and linear regression analysis. The analyzed variables were highly correlated with feed efficiency. The feed efficiency of lactating goats was affected by the milk fat correction, dry matter digestibility, dietary fiber content, proportion of roughage in the diet and body weight. Among these factors, standardization of the milk fat appeared to be the most efficient in correcting the feed efficiency in lactating goats. Correction of some of these factors implies greater precision in the measurement of feed efficiency

The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of the partial replacement of corn by alternative energy sources in concentrate supplements for beef cattle kept on Urochloa brizantha cultivar Marandu pasture, during the rainy season, on feed intake and total apparent digestibility. Five Nellore cattle with initial average body weight of 367.8±4.31 kg were used. The experimental design was a 5x5 Latin square, with five animals and five treatments. The following were evaluated: isoproteic concentrate supplements, at 30% crude protein, formulated with corn, millet, and sorghum grains, and soybean hulls; and a mineral supplement (control). No significant differences were observed in total dry matter (DM) and organic matter (OM) intake between the animals fed mineral supplementation and those receiving concentrate supplementation; however, the latter showed the lowest (12.28%) pasture DM intake. Concentrate supplementation increased the coefficient of total apparent digestibility of DM, OM, crude protein, and of non‑fiber carbohydrates that were not affected by the energy sources. Millet and sorghum grains, and soybean hulls can be used to partially replace corn in the formulation of concentrate supplements without affecting intake and digestibility of dietary nutrients

The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of inclusion levels of sunflower meal in feedlot lamb diets on animal productive performance. Forty crossbreed lambs, not castrated, with average initial body weight of 20.17±2.66 kg were feed levels of 0, 7, 14, 21, and 28% of sunflower meal in the diet (dry basis). The experiment was carried out in a randomized complete block design. The inclusion of sunflower meal in the diet did not affect average dry matter intake (883.58 g per day), feed conversion (4.40), and average water intake (2.59 L per day). The increase in the levels of sunflower meal linearly reduced final weight, total weight gain, average daily gain, and loin eye area. The inclusion level of up to 28% does not affect the average intake of dry matter and water, but reduces animal performance and loin eye area. To obtain the lowest cost with the diet, the inclusion level of sunflower meal can reach up to 28% of dry matter, when its price represents up to 40% of the price of corn and soybean meal blend

The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of supplementation on the productive response, ruminal pH and ammoniacal nitrogen, and production cost of sheep grazing marandu grass in the dry season. The experiment lasted 84 days. Twenty noncastrated lambs with average age and initial body weight of four months and 24.2 kg, respectively, were used for performance evaluation, and were distributed in the following treatments which are, mineral salt, energetic, multiple and proteic supplements, with five animals per treatment, in area of 0.1 ha. For nutritional parameters evaluation, four rumen fitted sheep with 12 months of age and 55 kg of weight were distributed in four paddocks of 0.1 ha. Mineral salt, energetic, multiple and proteic supplements were evaluated. Weight gains were 0.017, -0.008, 0.024 and 0.077 kg per day for mineral salt, energetic, proteic and multiple supplements, respectively. Four hours after supplementation, ruminal pH values were 6.30, 6.40, 6.18 and 6.24 for mineral salt, energetic, multiple and proteic supplements, respectively. Values for ammoniacal nitrogen in the rumen fluid were 10.57, 7.36, 21.58 and 24.50 mg dL-1 for mineral salt, energetic, multiple and proteic supplements, respectively. Mineral salt and proteic supplements produced weight gain with the lowest cost. The use of energetic supplement for lambs grazing lower protein content forage reduces weight gain.
