Taking the debate on the public meaning in the Public University as a research problem, the objective of this article is to understand how and in what way the public university contributes to its student body playing an emancipatory and critical role in society. A review of recent literature on the topic in question was adopted. The concrete experience of the Quotas Policy at the Federal University of Juiz de Fora was used as a reference document. The study demonstrated that the democratization of the Public University created conditions of possibility for the implementation and consolidation of the Quota Policy and, in this way, expanded access and retention of students, warning the most vulnerable sectors of brazilian society.

Intimismo e resistência: reflexões sobre os discursos poéticos de Ana Cristina César e Ferreira Gullar / Intimacy and resistance: reflections on Ana Cristina César’s and Ferreira Gullar’s poetical discourses

The changes introduced by the “avant-garde” literary movements were the starting point for the creation of new signs. One of these signs is the feminine semiotic language. The feminine is a mode of language open to male and female poets and writers. Through this mode, it is possible to relate Ana Cristina César’s and Ferreira Gullar’s poetical languages as similar discourse, able to symbolically deconstruct the hegemonic discourses

Effect of pH on the production of dispersed Bi4Ge3O12 nanoparticles by combustion synthesis

This paper reports the production of bismuth germanate ceramic scintillator (Bi4Ge3O12) by combustion synthesis (SHS) method, focusing on the influence of the synthesis parameters on the crystalline phases and agglomeration of the nanoparticles. The synthesis and sintering conditions were investigated through thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction as function of temperature, dilatometry and scanning electron microscopy. Well-dispersed Bi4Ge3O12 powder was accomplished by the combustion of the initial solution at pH 9, followed by low temperature calcination and milling. Sintered ceramics presented relative density of 98% and single crystalline Bi4Ge3O12 phase. The luminescent properties of the ceramics were investigated by photo- and radio- luminescence measurements and reproduced the typical Bi4Ge3O12 single-crystal spectra when excited with UV, beta and X-rays. The sintered ceramics presented light output of 4.4 x 10(3) photons/McV. Sexual Practices and Attitudes of Street Youth in Belo Horizonte, Brazil

Street youth are at risk of HIV infection worldwide. To develop effective prevention strategies, information about the meanings and functions of sexual activity for street youth is needed. In this paper, data from structured questionnaires, focus group discussions, in-depth interviews and field observations are used to build up a picture of the sexual culture of 9-to-18-year-olds living and/or working on the streets of a large Brazilian city. The findings reveal that these children and adolescents engage in sexual behavior that puts them at risk of sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV/AIDS, and reinforce that sex is a multi-determined and entrenched behavior in this population. Interventions must take into account the fact that for street youth, sex is used as a means of ensuring survival, seeking comfort, finding pleasure, and dealing with psychological issues that arise during adolescence

The occurrence of autochthonous cases of Chagas disease in the Amazon region of Brazil over recent decades has motivated an intensification of studies in this area. Different species of triatomines have been identified, and ten of these have be proven to be carriers of the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi or "cruzi-like" parasites. Studies conducted in the municipalities of Santa Isabel do Rio Negro and Barcelos, located on the Upper and Middle of the Negro River, microregion of Negro River, state of Amazonas have confirmed not only that Rhodnius brethesi is present in the palm tree Leopoldinia piassaba , but also that this insect was recognized by palm fiber collectors. A morphological study of eyes, inter-ocular and inter-ocellar regions, antennae, buccula, labrum, rostrum, stridulatory sulcus and feet, including the apex of the tibia, spongy fossette and ctenidium was conducted by scanning electron microscopy. The buccula and the stridulatory sulcus presented notable differences in specimens of different genera and also of different species. These data make it possible to suggest that the details presented in these structures can be included as diagnostic characteristics to be used in new dichotomous keys, thereby contributing towards studies of taxonomy and systematics and furnishing backing for comparative analysis of specimens collected from different localities
