Cadmium Content of South African Table Wines
Red and white South African table wines from the major wine producing districts were analysed for cadmium content. Only three wines had a slightly higher concentration than 0,010 mg/ t The average cadmium concentration was 0,003 mg/ f, and no relationship between cadmium content and origin could be determined
Fuzzy Topology, Quantization and Gauge Invariance
Dodson-Zeeman fuzzy topology considered as the possible mathematical
framework of quantum geometric formalism. In such formalism the states of
massive particle m correspond to elements of fuzzy manifold called fuzzy
points. Due to their weak (partial) ordering, m space coordinate x acquires
principal uncertainty dx. It's shown that m evolution with minimal number of
additional assumptions obeys to schroedinger and dirac formalisms in
norelativistic and relativistic cases correspondingly. It's argued that
particle's interactions on such fuzzy manifold should be gauge invariant.Comment: 12 pages, Talk given on 'Geometry and Field Theory' conference,

A device for single leaf labelling with CO2 isotopes to study carbon allocation and partitioning in Arabidopsis thaliana
BACKGROUND: Plant biomass consists primarily of carbohydrates derived from photosynthesis. Monitoring the assimilation of carbon via the Calvin-Benson cycle and its subsequent utilisation is fundamental to understanding plant growth. The use of stable and radioactive carbon isotopes, supplied to plants as CO(2), allows the measurement of fluxes through the intermediates of primary photosynthetic metabolism, long-distance transport of sugars in the vasculature, and the synthesis of structural and storage components. RESULTS: Here we describe the design of a system for supplying isotopically labelled CO(2) to single leaves of Arabidopsis thaliana. We demonstrate that the system works well using short pulses of (14)CO(2) and that it can be used to produce robust qualitative and quantitative data about carbon export from source leaves to the sink tissues, such as the developing leaves and the roots. Time course experiments show the dynamics of carbon partitioning between storage as starch, local production of biomass, and export of carbon to sink tissues. CONCLUSION: This isotope labelling method is relatively simple to establish and inexpensive to perform. Our use of (14)CO(2) helps establish the temporal and spatial allocation of assimilated carbon during plant growth, delivering data complementary to those obtained in recent studies using (13)CO(2) and MS-based metabolomics techniques. However, we emphasise that this labelling device could also be used effectively in combination with (13)CO(2) and MS-based techniques
Starch mobilization in leaves
Starch mobilization is well understood in cereal endosperms, but both the pathway and the regulation of the process are poorly characterized in other types of plant organs. Arabidopsis leaves offer the opportunity for rapid progress in this area, because of the genomic resources available in this species and the ease with which starch synthesis and degradation can be monitored and manipulated. Progress in understanding three aspects of starch degradation is described: the role of disproportionating enzyme, the importance of phosphorolytic degradation, and new evidence about the involvement of a starchâphosphorylating enzyme in the degradative process. Major areas requiring further research are outline
Congenital pseudarthrosis of the tibia : treatment with free vascularised fibular grafts
CITATION: Smith, C. S. F., Zeeman, V. R. B. J. & Wade, W. J. 1993. Congenital pseudarthrosis of the tibia : treatment with free vascularised fibular grafts. South African Medical Journal, 83:750-752.The original publication is available at http://www.samj.org.zaCongenital pseudarthrosis is uncommon. We report on a series of 4 patients treated by means of free vascularised fibular grafts. Complications encountered were graft fracture, delayed union and angulation deformities. Modifications in the surgical technique improved later results. We recommend wide excision of pathological bone, bridging of the defect by free vascularised fibular grafts and rigid fixation.Publisherâs versio
Hamiltonian statistical mechanics
A framework for statistical-mechanical analysis of quantum Hamiltonians is
introduced. The approach is based upon a gradient flow equation in the space of
Hamiltonians such that the eigenvectors of the initial Hamiltonian evolve
toward those of the reference Hamiltonian. The nonlinear double-bracket
equation governing the flow is such that the eigenvalues of the initial
Hamiltonian remain unperturbed. The space of Hamiltonians is foliated by
compact invariant subspaces, which permits the construction of statistical
distributions over the Hamiltonians. In two dimensions, an explicit dynamical
model is introduced, wherein the density function on the space of Hamiltonians
approaches an equilibrium state characterised by the canonical ensemble. This
is used to compute quenched and annealed averages of quantum observables.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, references adde
Quantized Rotation of Atoms From Photons with Orbital Angular Momentum
We demonstrate the coherent transfer of the orbital angular momentum of a
photon to an atom in quantized units of hbar, using a 2-photon stimulated Raman
process with Laguerre-Gaussian beams to generate an atomic vortex state in a
Bose-Einstein condensate of sodium atoms. We show that the process is coherent
by creating superpositions of different vortex states, where the relative phase
between the states is determined by the relative phases of the optical fields.
Furthermore, we create vortices of charge 2 by transferring to each atom the
orbital angular momentum of two photons.Comment: New version, 4 pages and 3 figures, accepted for publication in

Exact solution of the Zeeman effect in single-electron systems
Contrary to popular belief, the Zeeman effect can be treated exactly in
single-electron systems, for arbitrary magnetic field strengths, as long as the
term quadratic in the magnetic field can be ignored. These formulas were
actually derived already around 1927 by Darwin, using the classical picture of
angular momentum, and presented in their proper quantum-mechanical form in 1933
by Bethe, although without any proof. The expressions have since been more or
less lost from the literature; instead, the conventional treatment nowadays is
to present only the approximations for weak and strong fields, respectively.
However, in fusion research and other plasma physics applications, the magnetic
fields applied to control the shape and position of the plasma span the entire
region from weak to strong fields, and there is a need for a unified treatment.
In this paper we present the detailed quantum-mechanical derivation of the
exact eigenenergies and eigenstates of hydrogen-like atoms and ions in a static
magnetic field. Notably, these formulas are not much more complicated than the
better-known approximations. Moreover, the derivation allows the value of the
electron spin gyromagnetic ratio to be different from 2. For
completeness, we then review the details of dipole transitions between two
hydrogenic levels, and calculate the corresponding Zeeman spectrum. The various
approximations made in the derivation are also discussed in details.Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures. Submitted to Physica Script
