Advanced Electrodes for Solid Acid Fuel Cells by Platinum Deposition on CsH_(2)PO_4

    Get PDF
We demonstrate cathodes for solid acid fuel cells fabricated by vapor deposition of platinum from the metalorganic precursor Pt(acac)_2 on the solid acid CsH_(2)PO_4 at 210 Ā°C. A network of platinum nanoparticles with diameters of 2āˆ’4 nm serves as both the oxygen reduction catalyst and the electronic conductor in the electrode. Electrodes with a platinum content of 1.75 mg/cm^2 are more active for oxygen reduction than previously reported electrodes with a platinum content of 7.5 mg/cm^2. Electrodes containing <1.75 mg/cm^2 of platinum show significantly reduced catalytic activity and increased ohmic resistance indicative of a highly discontinuous catalytic-electronic platinum network

Variability, heritability and components of variance for number of grains per spike and grain weight per spike have been studied in 10 winter wheat varieties from different selection centers (Arsenal, KG-56, Gruza, Mironovskaya 808, Norin 10, Rana Niska, Spartanka, Sterna, Osjecanka, and Szegedi 765). The experiment was performed in randomized block design in three replications on the experimental field of Small Grains Research Centre, Kragujevac in three years. Average estimated values for number of grains per spike and grain weight per spike differed significantly among years and among varieties. The highest average value for number of grains per spike had Szegedi 765 variety ( x = 75.1) and the lowest value was found in Spartanka ( x = 56.0). During investigated period the highest average value for grain weight per spike was determined in Gruza ( Norin 10 ( x = 2.9 g), and the lowest value in x = 2.0 g). The average variation coefficient for number of grains per spike was 17.4%, and for grain weight per spike was 21.4%. The lowest variability for number of grains per spike and grain weight per spike was established in Sterna variety (V = 13.0%; 16.2%, respectively) and the highest in Norin 10 variety (V = 21.6%; 25.1%, respectively). Obtained heritability value in broad sense for number of grains per spike was about 60%, and for grain weight per spike about 40%. Statistical analysis of variance established highly significant differences in mean values for number of grains per spike and grain weight per spike. Phenotypic analysis of variance indicated that ecological factors had higher impact on the expression of number of grains per spike and grain weight per spike than genetic factors

Public reactions to the disaster COVID-19: a comparative study in Italy, Lebanon, Portugal, and Serbia

A new coronavirus emerged in December 2019 and quickly spread globally, causing unprecedented social, psychological, and economic damage. This study aimed to investigate people's emotional reactions to the COVID-19 pandemic. The dataset for this study consisted of 2,013 adults (962 males and 1,053 females) in four countries (Italy, Lebanon, Portugal, and Serbia). A snowball sampling technique that focused on recruiting the general public living in countries during the COVID-19 epidemic was utilized. An online survey was disseminated at the same time, in March-April 2020, when many countries were exposed to COVID-19. Results indicated that, with regard to gender, females had more psychological reactions to COVID-19 than did males. People who had one child were more stressed than people with no children. Extensive knowledge of COVID-19 was found to trigger more anxiety. Results showed that stress and overall emotional reactions increased with age. The findings can be used to develop psychological interventions to improve mental health and psychological resilience during the COVID-19 epidemic

Use of Community Support and Health Services in an Age-Friendly City: The Lived Experiences of the Oldest-Old

    Get PDF
Increases in population ageing and urbanization have led to the development of age-friendly cities (AFC). While much has been done to integrate the needs of younger, healthier older adults, little research has examined the needs of the oldest-old. This phenomenological study explored the lived experience of 10 community-dwelling individuals, aged 80 years and older, using community support and health services. Three central themes emerged: individual circumstances, personal compensatory mechanisms and community design and structure. Numerous implications for AFC development were highlighted: (1) functional ability rather than chronological age should be considered in AFC planning, (2) informal social community supports are very important for those in advanced age; AFC planners must consider individuals in advanced age who are on the edge of losing their independence, and whose loss of independence may be hastened or delayed based on informal social supports available, (3) community design that recognizes and integrates structures to support the needs of frailer older adults may provide a protective buffer to enable these individuals to remain in their homes longer, and (4) socially isolated frail older adults are difficult to reach; innovative strategies are required to ensure their unique needs are discovered and incorporated in community planning

Electrical conductivity of poly (L lactic acid) and poly (3-hydroxybutyrate) composites filled with galvanostatically produced copper powder

This manuscript presents experimental studies of composite materials based on poly (L lactic acid) (PLLA) and poly (3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) matrices filled with electrolytic copper powder, having a very high dendritic structure. Volume fractions of the copper powder used as filler in all prepared composites were varied in the range 0.5-6.0 vol.%. Samples were prepared by hot moulding injection at 170 degrees C. Influence of particle size and morphology, as well as the influence of matrix type on conductivity and percolation threshold of the obtained composites were examined. Characterization included: electrical conductivity measurements using AC impedance spectroscopy (IS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and Fourier-transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Presence of three-dimensional conductive pathways was confirmed. The obtained percolation thresholds of 2.83 vol.% for PLLA and 3.13 vol.% for PHB composites were measured, which is about three times lower than the ones stated in the literature for similar composites. This property is ascribed to different morphologies of the filler used in the present investigation

Origins of Cortical GABAergic Neurons in the Cynomolgus Monkey

In human most cortical Ī³-aminobutyric acidergic (GABAergic) neurons are produced in the proliferative zones of the dorsal telencephalon in contrast to rodents. We report that in cynomolgus monkey fetuses cortical GABAergic neurons are generated in the proliferative zones of the dorsal telencephalon, in addition to the proliferative region of the ventral telencephalon, the ganglionic eminence (GE), however, with a temporal delay. GABAergic neuron progenitors labeled for Mash1 and GAD65 were present mainly in the GE at embryonic days (E) 47ā€“55, and in the entire dorsal telencephalon at E64ā€“75. These progenitors within the dorsal telencephalon are generated locally rather than in the GE. The ventral and dorsal lineages of cortical GABAergic neurons display different laminar distribution. Early generated GABAergic neurons from the GE mostly populate the marginal zone and subplate, whereas cortical plate GABAergic neurons originate from both ventral and dorsal telencephalon. A differential regulation of the two GABA synthesizing enzymes (GAD65 and GAD67) parallels GABAergic neuron differentiation. GAD65 is preferentially expressed in GABAergic progenitors and migrating neurons, GAD67 in morphologically differentiated neurons. Therefore, the dorsal telencephalic origin of cortical GABAergic neurons is not human-specific but appears as a former event in the ascent of evolution that could provide GABAergic neurons to an expending neocortex
