Cerebellar syndrome with meningoencephalitis due to Mycoplasma Pneumoniae
We report a 24-year-old woman with a Mycoplasma pneumonitis associated with subacute meningoencephalitis and acute cerebellitis that caused a cerebellar atrophy. Electroencephalogram showed diffuse dysfunction in the brain. There was few white blood cell but normal glucose and protein in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Brain MRI showed bilateral atrophy of cerebellum
Preparation of silver nanoparticles in virgin coconut oil using laser ablation
Laser ablation of a silver plate immersed in virgin coconut oil was carried out for fabrication of silver nanoparticles. A Nd:YAG laser at wavelengths of 1064 nm was used for ablation of the plate at different times. The virgin coconut oil allowed formation of nanoparticles with well-dispersed, uniform particle diameters that were stable for a reasonable length of time. The particle sizes and volume fraction of nanoparticles inside the solutions obtained at 15, 30, 45 min ablation times were 4.84, 5.18, 6.33 nm and 1.0 × 10−8, 1.6 × 10−8, 2.4 × 10−8, respectively. The presented method for preparation of silver nanoparticles in virgin coconut oil is environmentally friendly and may be considered a green method
Can calcitonin nasal spray reduce the risk of recurrence of central giant cell granuloma of the jaws? A double-blind clinical trial
Recurrence is a major problem following the treatment of aggressive central
giant cell granuloma (CGCG). The aim of this study was to compare the frequency
of recurrence between patients who received calcitonin nasal spray after curettage
of CGCGs and those who did not. A double-blind clinical trial was designed.
Patients were allocated to one of two groups: those in the calcitonin group
underwent curettage and received calcitonin salmon nasal spray 200 IU/day once a
day for 3 months after surgery; those in the control group underwent curettage of
CGCGs and received a placebo once a day for 3 months after surgery. All patients
were followed for 5 years after surgery. Twenty-four patients were treated in the two
groups. There was no difference in age, sex, tumour size, or tumour location
between the two groups (P > 0.05). Eight of the 24 patients (33.3%) had
recurrences during the follow-up period: one in the calcitonin group (9.1%) and
seven in the control group (53.8%). Analysis of the data demonstrated a significant
difference between the two study groups (P = 0.033). It appears that calcitonin nasal
spray may reduce the frequency of recurrence in aggressive CGCGs in the mandible
and maxilla
Fabrication and Characterization of Gelatin Stabilized Silver Nanoparticles under UV-Light
Silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) were successfully synthesized using the UV irradiation of aqueous solutions containing AgNO3 and gelatin as a silver source and stabilizer, respectively. The UV irradiation times influence the particles’ diameter of the Ag-NPs, as evidenced from surface plasmon resonance (SPR) bands and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images. When the UV irradiation time was increased, the mean size of particles continuously decreased as a result of photoinduced Ag-NPs fragmentation. Based on X-ray diffraction (XRD), the UV-irradiated Ag-NPs were a face-centered cubic (fcc) single crystal without any impurity. This study reveals that the UV irradiation-mediated method is a green chemistry and promising route for the synthesis of stable Ag-NPs for several applications (e.g., medical and surgical devices). The important advantages of this method are that it is cheap, easy, and free of toxic materials
Thermal diffusivity measurement of copper nanofluid using pulsed laser thermal lens technique
Tunable Raman fiber laser induced by Rayleigh backscattering in an ultra-long cavity
We report an ultra-long Raman laser with a 46 km fiber length that behaved as a Rayleigh back-scattering–based optical feedback. The laser was tunable from 1550 nm to 1571 nm (3 dB bandwidth) with the insertion of an optical grating filter. Evaluations on the spectral evolution and power development were also performed from the results obtained. In fact, it was discovered that the spectral broadening effect between the modeless spectra resembled the same process that happens in a typical fiber cavity that has high reflectors at each cavity end. In addition, the output power showed a square-root development with respect to the input power
Bio-nanotechnology application in wastewater treatment
The nanoparticles have received high interest in the field of medicine and water purification, however, the nanomaterials produced by chemical and physical methods are considered hazardous, expensive, and leave behind harmful substances to the environment. This chapter aimed to focus on green-synthesized nanoparticles and their medical applications. Moreover, the chapter highlighted the applicability of the metallic nanoparticles (MNPs) in the inactivation of microbial cells due to their high surface and small particle size. Modifying nanomaterials produced by green-methods is safe, inexpensive, and easy. Therefore, the control and modification of nanoparticles and their properties were also discussed
Autoimmune and autoinflammatory mechanisms in uveitis
The eye, as currently viewed, is neither immunologically ignorant nor sequestered from the systemic environment. The eye utilises distinct immunoregulatory mechanisms to preserve tissue and cellular function in the face of immune-mediated insult; clinically, inflammation following such an insult is termed uveitis. The intra-ocular inflammation in uveitis may be clinically obvious as a result of infection (e.g. toxoplasma, herpes), but in the main infection, if any, remains covert. We now recognise that healthy tissues including the retina have regulatory mechanisms imparted by control of myeloid cells through receptors (e.g. CD200R) and soluble inhibitory factors (e.g. alpha-MSH), regulation of the blood retinal barrier, and active immune surveillance. Once homoeostasis has been disrupted and inflammation ensues, the mechanisms to regulate inflammation, including T cell apoptosis, generation of Treg cells, and myeloid cell suppression in situ, are less successful. Why inflammation becomes persistent remains unknown, but extrapolating from animal models, possibilities include differential trafficking of T cells from the retina, residency of CD8(+) T cells, and alterations of myeloid cell phenotype and function. Translating lessons learned from animal models to humans has been helped by system biology approaches and informatics, which suggest that diseased animals and people share similar changes in T cell phenotypes and monocyte function to date. Together the data infer a possible cryptic infectious drive in uveitis that unlocks and drives persistent autoimmune responses, or promotes further innate immune responses. Thus there may be many mechanisms in common with those observed in autoinflammatory disorders
Development and validation of novel clinical endpoints in intermediate age-related macular degeneration in MACUSTAR
Background
Currently, no validated clinical endpoints for treatment studies exist for intermediate age-related macular degeneration (iAMD).
Objective
The European MACUSTAR study aims to develop and clinically validate adequate clinical endpoints for future treatment studies in iAMD and to identify early determinants of disease progression to late stage AMD.
Material and methods
The MACUSTAR study protocol was developed by an international consortium of researchers from academia, the pharmaceutical industry and medical device companies. The MACUSTAR project is funded by the Innovative Medicines Initiative 2 (IMI2) of the European Union.
Results
The MACUSTAR study consists of a cross-sectional and a longitudinal investigation. A total of 750 subjects with early, intermediate and late AMD as well as control subjects with no signs of AMD will be included with a follow-up period of 3 years. Overall, 20 European study centers are involved.
Conclusion
The MACUSTAR project will generate large high-quality datasets, which will allow clinical validation of novel endpoints for future interventional trials in iAMD. The aim is that these endpoints will be accepted as suitable for medication approval studies by the regulatory authorities and that understanding of the disease process will be improved
