    Rio Grande do Sul as published by Livraria do Globo: Regionalist temporalities and publishing (1924-1960)

    In this article I intend to analyze the nexuses between the editorial project of Livraria do Globo, a publishing house of Porto Alegre, andgaúcho regionalism in Rio Grande do Sul in three temporalities: the heroic gauchismo of the 1920s; the critique and downward path of regionalism in the 1930s; and the return to themes and topics involving the South by local intelligentsia, with new criteria, after the end of the Estado Novo (1937-1945). The publication of regionalist books took up a significant proportion of the life of Livraria do Globo, fluctuating according to the interest of the public, the political situation, the development of the Brazilian market, and the relatively increased autonomy in the cultural field. On the one hand it can be said that, as a literary and for a while political movement, gaúcho regionalism depended almost exclusively on Globo’s investments in publishing, which enabled efforts to reconfigure this line ideologically and esthetically.     O gaúcho de José de Alencar e a nação como projeto: “romantismo político” à brasileira?

    O romantismo literário vigente no século XIX no Brasil deu os primeiros passos na longa caminhada em direção à nação. Nesse sentido, podemos citar o escritor José de Alencar como um dos precursores da tarefa, seguida por gerações de intelectuais, de conferir à unidade política do país imagens de um passado comum, diverso, mas integrado. O objetivo desse trabalho é testar os apontamentos de Michael Löwy e Robert Sayre sobre o “romantismo político” para o projeto de invenção da nação posto em prática na literatura de José de Alencar, através da leitura do livro O Gaúcho, publicado, originalmente, em 1870. Tais autores definem o termo como uma “crítica da sociedade burguesa que se inspira em uma referência ao passado pré-capitalista”. Trata-se, então, de averiguar e analisar os índices políticos do texto, expressos em sua composição formal, como a crítica ao progresso, a nostalgia do tempo perdido, a construção do “bom selvagem” pampiano e a projeção romântica de futuro baseada no passado mítico

    Neste artigo, pretendo analisar os nexos entre o projeto editorial da Livraria do Globo, de Porto Alegre, e o regionalismo gaúcho, em três temporalidades: o gauchismo heroico, nos anos 1920; a crítica e o descenso do regional na década de 1930; e a retomada dos temas e assuntos do Sul pela intelectualidade local, sob novos critérios, após o fim do Estado Novo. A edição de livros regionalistas ocupou parcela significativa da vida da casa editora, oscilando de acordo com o interesse do público, a conjuntura política, o desenvolvimento do mercado brasileiro e a relativa autonomização do campo cultural. De um lado, pode-se afirmar que, enquanto movimento literário e, por certo tempo, político, o regionalismo gaúcho dependeu quase que exclusivamente dos investimentos da Globo em edição, o que permitiu os esforços de reconfiguração ideológica e estética da vertente.     Historiadores e memória da historiografia no Rio Grande do Sul: a edição póstuma de Terra Gaúcha (1955), de Simões Lopes Neto

    The purpose of this article is to examine the posthumous paratextual apparatus of Terra Gaúcha (1955), unpublished historical essay of regionalist writer João Simões Lopes Neto (1865-1916). What were the conditions (and limits) of the uses of the work and its author in the period of the edition? Therefore, we seek to combine an editorial history of the manuscript to a typology of the footnotes prepared by historians-editors. The edition of Terra Gaúcha aimed at legitimizing the positions taken by the group of marginal historians-folklorists in the Historical and Geographical Institute of Rio Grande do Sul - Brasil (IHGRS), creating a noble precursor and a memory narrative for its own writing history project. This operation allowed the scientific updating of the text, by including bibliographic and documentary footnotes. It also needed an ideological concession to the dominante historic theses about the social formation of Rio Grande do Sul. This partial authorization, however, turned out to strengthen the veto for a professional identity of historian to Simões Lopes Neto.O objetivo deste artigo é examinar o aparato paratextual póstumo de Terra Gaúcha (1955), ensaio histórico inédito do escritor regionalista João Simões Lopes Neto (1865-1916). Quais eram as condições (e os limites) da apropriação da obra e do autor no período da edição? Para tanto, busco aliar uma história editorial do manuscrito a uma tipologia das notas de rodapé elaboradas pelos historiadores-editores. A edição de Terra Gaúcha visava legitimar as posições adotadas pelo grupo de historiadores-folcloristas marginal no âmbito do Instituto Histórico e Geográfico do Rio Grande do Sul (IHGRS), criando um precursor nobre e uma narrativa de memória para seu projeto de escrita de história. Essa operação passou pela atualização científica do texto, através da inclusão de notas de rodapé bibliográficas e documentais, e pela concessão ideológica a teses então dominantes a respeito da formação do Rio Grande do Sul. Essa autorização parcial, no entanto, acabou por reforçar o veto à identidade profissional de historiador para Simões Lopes Neto
