    Hopf algebras from poset growth models

    We give a framework for growth models on posets which simultaneously generalizes the Classical Sequential Growth models for posets from causal set theory and the tree growth models of natural growth and simple tree classes, the latter of which also appear as solutions of combinatorial Dyson-Schwinger equations in quantum field theory. We prove which cases of the Classical Sequential Growth models give subHopf algebras of the Hopf algebra of posets, in analogy to a characterization due to Foissy in the Dyson-Schwinger case. We find a family of generating sets for the Connes-Moscovici Hopf algebra.Comment: 37 page

    Dirac, Majorana, Weyl in 4d

    This is a review of some elementary properties of Dirac, Weyl and Majorana spinors in 4d. We focus in particular on the differences between massless Dirac and Majorana fermions, on one side, and Weyl fermions, on the other. We review in detail the definition of their effective actions, when coupled to (vector and axial) gauge fields, and revisit the corresponding anomalies using the Feynman diagram method with different regularizations. Among various well known results we stress in particular the regularization independence in perturbative approaches, while not all the regularizations fit the non-perturbative ones. As for anomalies, we highlight in particular one perhaps not so well known feature: the rigid relation between chiral and trace anomalies.Comment: 38 pages, 3 figures, section 5, Appendix A and Appendix C new, several typos correcte

    Posterior meningocele is an uncommon form of spina bifida. We present a case of unique posterior meningocele diagnosed at the early second trimester anatomical scan using 2D and 3D ultrasound. The sonographic appearance resembled “lasso”. The prenatal follow-up was uneventful, with no demonstration of tethered cord. Clinical, neurological and radiological examinations following delivery and at the age of four months were unremarkable

    Evolution of universes in causal set cosmology

    The causal set approach to the problem of quantum gravity is based on the hypothesis that spacetime is fundamentally discrete. Spacetime discreteness opens the door to novel types of dynamical law for cosmology and the Classical Sequential Growth (CSG) models of Rideout and Sorkin form an interesting class of such laws. It has been shown that a renormalisation of the dynamical parameters of a CSG model occurs whenever the universe undergoes a Big Crunch–Big Bang bounce. In this paper we propose a way to model the creation of a new universe after the singularity of a black hole. We show that renormalisation of dynamical parameters occurs in a CSG model after such a creation event. We speculate that this could realise aspects of Smolin's Cosmological Natural Selection proposal

    AC impedance of poled glass during de-poling

    It has been observed in the literature that when the DC poling voltage is removed at the end of the poling process in glass in a so called de-poling experiment, the small signal AC impedance as measured by impedance spectroscopy increases immediately. It is shown that this effect can be explained if the DC voltage causes nonlinear ionic conduction to occur in the poled layer. The DC field changes the barrier height over which ions have to jump from one site to another and this also effects the AC resistance; by removing the DC field the original barrier height is restored thus increasing the AC resistance. Analysis of experimental data using poled soda-lime glass supports this interpretation

    Small fetal thymus and adverse obstetrical outcome: a systematic review and a meta-analysis.

    INTRODUCTION: To explore the association between small fetal thymus on ultrasound and adverse obstetrical outcome. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Medline, Embase, Cochrane and Web of Science databases were searched. Primary outcome was the risk of preterm birth before 37 and 34 weeks in fetuses with compared to those without a small thymus on ultrasound. SECONDARY OUTCOMES: occurrence of chorioamnionitis, intra-uterine growth restriction, neonatal sepsis, gestational age at birth, birthweight, neonatal morbidity and pre-eclampsia. RESULTS: Twelve studies including 1744 fetuses who had ultrasound assessment of thymus during pregnancy were included. Women with preterm premature rupture of the membranes (PPROM) or with preterm labour with a small fetal thymus were at higher risk of preterm birth <37 (p= 0.01), <34 (12.5 (p<0.001) weeks in fetuses with compared to those without small thymus, and the risk of chorioamnionitis was higher when the thymus was small (p<0.001). Fetuses with small thymus were not at higher risk of intra-uterine growth restriction (p= 0.3). A small thymus increased the risk of neonatal sepsis (p= 0.007) and morbidity (p= 0.003), but not the risk of pre-eclampsia (p= 0.9). CONCLUSIONS: A small fetal thymus is associated with a higher risk of preterm birth, chorioamnionitis, neonatal sepsis and morbidity, but not with intra-uterine growth restriction and pre-eclampsia.     Challenges in the prenatal and post-natal diagnosis of mediastinal cystic hygroma: a case report

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Cystic hygroma is a benign congenital neoplasm that mostly presents as a soft-tissue mass in the posterior triangle of the neck. Pure mediastinal lesions are uncommon; the vast majority are asymptomatic and are an incidental finding in adulthood. The diagnosis is often made intra- or postoperatively. Prenatal identification is exceptional and post-natal diagnosis also proves challenging.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>We report one such case that was mistaken for other entities in both the prenatal and immediate post-natal period. Initial and follow-up antenatal ultrasound scans demonstrated a multicystic lesion in the left chest, and the mother was counselled about the possibility of her baby having a congenital diaphragmatic hernia. Initial post-natal chest radiographs were reported as normal. An echocardiogram and thoracic computed tomography scan confirmed a complex multiloculated cystic mediastinal mass. The working diagnoses were of a mediastinal teratoma or congenital cystic adenomatous malformation. At operation, the lesion was compressed by the left lung and was found to be close to the left phrenic nerve, which was carefully identified and preserved. After excision, histopathological examination of the mass confirmed the diagnosis of cystic hygroma. Postoperative dyspnoea was observed secondary to paradoxical movement of the left hemidiaphragm and probable left phrenic neuropraxia. This settled conservatively with excellent recovery.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Despite the fact that isolated intrathoracic cystic hygroma is a rare entity, it needs to be considered in the differential diagnosis of foetal and neonatal mediastinal masses, particularly for juxtadiaphragmatic lesions. The phrenic nerve is not identifiable on prenatal ultrasound imaging, and it is therefore understandable that a mass close to the diaphragm may be mistaken for a congenital diaphragmatic hernia because of the location, morphology and potential phrenic nerve compression. Post-natal diagnosis may also be misleading as many mediastinal cystic masses have similar appearances on imaging. Therefore, as well as cystic architecture, special consideration needs to be given to the anatomical location and effect on local structures.</p

    A proposed methodology for the assessment of arsenic, nickel, cadmium and lead levels in ambient air

    Air quality assessment, required by the European Union (EU) Air Quality Directive, Directive 2008/50/EC, is part of the functions attributed to Environmental Management authorities. Based on the cost and time consumption associated with the experimental works required for the air quality assessment in relation to the EU-regulated metal and metalloids, other methods such as modelling or objective estimation arise as competitive alternatives when, in accordance with the Air Quality Directive, the levels of pollutants permit their use at a specific location. This work investigates the possibility of using statistical models based on Partial Least Squares Regression (PLSR) and Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) to estimate the levels of arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), nickel (Ni) and lead (Pb) in ambient air and their application for policy purposes. A methodology comprising the main steps that should be taken into consideration to prepare the input database, develop the model and evaluate their performance is proposed and applied to a case of study in Santander (Spain). It was observed that even though these approaches present some difficulties in estimating the individual sample concentrations, having an equivalent performance they can be considered valid for the estimation of the mean values - those to be compared with the limit/target values - fulfilling the uncertainty requirements in the context of the Air Quality Directive. Additionally, the influence of the consideration of input variables related to atmospheric stability on the performance of the studied statistical models has been determined. Although the consideration of these variables as additional inputs had no effect on As and Cd models, they did yield an improvement for Pb and Ni, especially with regard to ANN models.This work was supported by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (MINECO) through the Projects CTM2010-16068 and CTM2013-43904R.
