Book Review – Appropriate Illustrations for Appropriate Functions: The Taxonomy of Illustration

    Get PDF
"A picture is worth a thousand words" is an eloquent statement of the critical role visual representation performs in communicating information. Whether it be in print or non-printed form such as the computer screen, a visual representation can communicate an idea or a concept or a body of information in a way which is more effective, economical and elegant than a wordy account of it. The effective use of a visual representation is dependent on both the type of representation that is used and how it is used in relation to the text that accompanies it, as well as the intended target audience. This subject is precisely the focal concern of Appropriate Illustrations for Appropriate Functions: The Taxonomy of Illustration written by Normahdiah Sheik Said, an academic at the Faculty of Modern Languages and Communication at Universiti Putra Malaysia, Serdang, Malaysi

    Get PDF
Trust issues is still considered as a main obstacle in the implementation of eCommerce Due to the increasing numbers of cyber crimes committed today, consumers are faced with doubt to engage in online shopping. As a safety precaution, consumers will take certain measures to protect their information by evaluating and assessing these websites trustworthiness before an actual purchase occurs. This paper describes a model that examines the elements related to online consumer behavior and to investigate this behavior towards building and increasing trust. The applicability of the model was tested in attempt to view consumers' acceptance towards the model and its component. The fmdings indicate the respondents are aware of the trust issue surrounding e-Commerce implementation as they accept and agreed with the model and its components

As we know Runge-Kutta method is a one step method hence it is quite limited in terms of implementation in parallel, here we going to exploit and extend the favourable characteristic of Runge-Kutta method so that they can be implemented in parallel. In this thesis we are focusing in two types of Runge-Kutta methods. The first one is the Diagonally Implicit Runge-Kutta (DIRK) method. The method used here is actually have been tailored made for the purpose of parallel machine where the subsequent functions evaluations do not depend on the previous function evaluations. The second family of Runge-Kutta method is the block Runge-Kutta both explicit and implicit. In this study, we exploit these methods so that we can implement in parallel mode. The C programming of the methods employed are run on a shared memory Sequent SE30 parallel computer. All the numerical results are given to illustrate the algorithms developed for the cases that we were tested. The numerical results show that the parallel algorithms of diagonally implicit Runge-Kutta (DIRK), block explicit Runge-Kutta (BERK) and block diagonally implicit Runge-Kutta (BDIRK) methods is better than sequential modes because the parallel execution time is smaller than sequential execution time

    Get PDF
This progress report is basically present the research that has been done so for far based on the chosen topic, which is Development of 3D Crane PID Controller System via State-space Approach. The objective of the project is to be able to determine the 3D Crane and 2D Crane dynamics using the state-space approach and applies the Proportional-Integral-Derivative controller algorithm into the system for improvement. This dynamic equation is important for simulating the 2D crane in computer using Matlab and Simulink: software and designing a suitable controller for the 2D crane. The mathematical equation for 2D crane can be modeled dynamically using various approaches such as Lagrange-Euler's Method and Newton-Euler's Method. After the success of producing the 2D Crane dynamics, the mathematical formulation of 3D Crane dynamics will take place. Using the appropriate approach, the mathematical or state space equation of the 3D Crane dynamics will be produced for simulation in Matlab and Simulink Sofware. Finally, the Proportional-Integral-Derivative controller will be added into the system for increasing of crane reliability and productivity

    Get PDF
Pectin was extracted from selected local fruits by-product, which was a banana, mango, and papaya peel by using the citric acid solution as a solvent. The primary objectives of this study were to extract pectin from selected local fruits by-product as well as, to determine and compare the physicochemical properties of extracted pectin to that of commercial pectin. Pectin extracted from mango peel gave the highest yield significantly (15.4%) as compared to banana peel pectin (14.47%) and papaya peel pectin (12.77%). The physicochemical properties of pectin obtained were compared with commercial pectin. These include color, degree of esterification (DE), ash, moisture, solubility, and viscosity. The color measurement of pectin showed it has a significant difference between other types of pectin. The color parameter L (lightness) showed commercial pectin had the highest value of 89.17 significantly, yet significantly the lowest of a* (redness) value of 1.72. Hence, thecolor parameter b* (yellowness) showed that the papaya peel pectin was significantly the highest (17.65) as compared to other types of pectin. All pectins in this study were of high methoxyl pectin as the DE was found to be more than 50%. No significant difference was noted for DE between commercial pectin and both banana and mango peel pectin. As for the ash content, banana peel pectin has significantly the highest ash content of about 4.60% compared to other types of pectin. Moisture content also showed a significant difference between all kinds of pectin. Solubility analysis also indicated significant difference between all types of pectin in this study with commercial pectin to possess the highest solubility (98.37%) as compared to other types of pectin. No significant difference was noted for viscosity between commercial pectin and mango peel pectin. Based on this study, it can be concluded that pectin extracted from mango peel possess high chances to be exploited and commercialized as most of the physicochemical analysis carried out showed no significant difference to that of commercial pectin.
