The Relationship between Virginia School Divisions’ Anti-Bullying Policy Scores and the Percentage of Student Offenses of Bullying

State laws and policies that adhere to U.S. Department of Education (USDOE)-recommended anti-bullying legislative components have been found to reduce rates of bullying in schools. No longer considered a normal or tolerated part of childhood and adolescence, state legislation and local policy regarding bullying have experienced substantial growth over the last decade. Consequently, state laws and local policies are currently a critical component in response to bullying behavior and yet, there is limited research that has investigated the relationship between anti-bullying policies and the prevalence of bullying. The purpose of this correlational study was to determine whether a relationship exists between the adherence of the school division’s anti-bullying policy and the percentage of offenses of bullying in the school divisions of Virginia. A convenience sample of 132 Virginia school divisions was used in this study. A Spearman’s rho correlation was used to determine if a statistically significant relationship existed between the variables. It was discovered that no significant relationship exists between the adherence of the Virginia school division’s anti-bullying policy score as measured by the Modified Subcomponent Criterion List and the percentage of student offenses of bullying in the school divisions

Will Executors as Oath-Takers: A Comparison of the Lombard Laws and Wills in the Middle Ages

Although at first glance the practices of oathtaking mentioned in the Lombard Laws and the legal function of Anglo-Saxon wills or testaments may seem different, in fact they often serve the same or very similar purposes. In the Lombard Laws, it is explicitly mentioned that one who swears an oath is expected to carry out the stipulations or actions for which he made himself obligated by swearing such a pledge. In the same way, one named as executor of a will is expected by the maker of the will, or testator, to fully carry out the instructions in the will. By accepting their role, the executor is acknowledging their role and the obligations that go with it, becoming responsible for carrying out the wishes of the deceased. Of particular note are the anathema clauses of wills which promise that great ill shall befall an executor or any individuals that knowingly go against the explicitly-stated wishes of the deceased; such a person can be seen as an oathbreaker, and their punishment is to be tormented in hell for all eternity. The religious connotation of oath-swearing can also be seen in the Lombard Laws, where oaths were often required to be sworn on the sacred gospels or on consecrated arms, and where the influence of the Christian faith can clearly be seen. Additionally, during the Middle Ages there were severe consequences for those who break oaths, such as oaths of fealty sworn to lords or the king, and those that broke such oaths were considered felons, and made outcasts to the effect that anyone was legally able to kill them without consequence

Promising Instructional Reforms in Developmental Education: A Case Study of Three Achieving the Dream Colleges

Workplace genres: a sociohistorical study of communicative practices in a production company

Studies of communication in the workplace have traditionally addressed a limited set of formal texts (e.g., memos, proposals, procedures) and described how those texts circulate in more or less predictable systems. Consequently, many of our assumptions about professional communication activities depend on simple transactional or rhetorical models that do not take into account historical factors and conceptualize too narrowly;This study addresses social and historical variation in a single company\u27s communicative habits from 1920 until 1985 to illustrate how rhetorical performances in the workplace operate in complex networks of activity. This study challenges formalist conceptions of professional communication by examining how communicative practices emerge, develop, and decay as professionals use texts to negotiate their work activities over extended periods of time. This historical study of the complex and often unpredictable interplay of workplace activities and communicative practices reveals how seemingly stable workplace genres are actually contested sites where communicators make decisions to vary and repeat prior practices;Workplace activities at The Rath Packing Company of Waterloo, Iowa, form the background for this study. Focusing on the interplay between company activities and communicative practices, the study explores how management techniques, regulatory controls, and technological tools in the twentieth century affected workplace communication
