The murky waters of neoliberal marketization and commodification on the education of adults in the United States
We approach marketization and commodification of adult education from multiple lenses including our personal narratives and neoliberalism juxtaposed against the educational philosophy of the Progressive Period. We argue that adult education occurs in many arenas including the public spaces found in social movements, community-based organizations, and government sponsored programs designed to engage and give voice to all citizens toward building a stronger civil society. We conclude that only when adult education is viewed from the university lens, where it focuses on the individual and not the public good, does it succumb to neoliberal forces. (DIPF/Orig.
Hyperuniformity in amorphous speckle patterns
Hyperuniform structures possess the ability to confine and drive light,
although their fabrication is extremely challenging. Here we demonstrate that
speckle patters obtained by a superposition of randomly arranged sources of
Bessel beams can be used to generate hyperunifrom scalar fields. By exploiting
laser light tailored with a spatial filter, we experimentally produce (without
requiring any computational power) a speckle pattern possessing maxima at
locations corresponding to a hyperuniform distribution. By properly filtering
out intensity fluctuation from the same speckle pattern, it is possible to
retrieve an intensity profile satisfying the hyperuniformity requirements. Our
findings are supported by extensive numerical simulations.Comment: 13 pages, 7 figure
Establishment of a local food system in eastern Iowa
Several strategies to enhance local food production and marketing were employed by the Johnson County (IA) Soil and Water Conservation District. Among them were a pilot project on institutional buying practices, a directory of local food products, planning of locally sourced All-Iowa meals, and other educational and outreach activities
Quantitative performance characterization of three-dimensional noncontact fluorescence molecular tomography
© 2016 The Authors.Fluorescent proteins and dyes are routine tools for biological research to describe the behavior of genes, proteins, and cells, as well as more complex physiological dynamics such as vessel permeability and pharmacokinetics. The use of these probes in whole body in vivo imaging would allow extending the range and scope of current biomedical applications and would be of great interest. In order to comply with a wide variety of application demands, in vivo imaging platform requirements span from wide spectral coverage to precise quantification capabilities. Fluorescence molecular tomography (FMT) detects and reconstructs in three dimensions the distribution of a fluorophore in vivo. Noncontact FMT allows fast scanning of an excitation source and noninvasive measurement of emitted fluorescent light using a virtual array detector operating in free space. Here, a rigorous process is defined that fully characterizes the performance of a custom-built horizontal noncontact FMT setup. Dynamic range, sensitivity, and quantitative accuracy across the visible spectrum were evaluated using fluorophores with emissions between 520 and 660 nm. These results demonstrate that high-performance quantitative three-dimensional visible light FMT allowed the detection of challenging mesenteric lymph nodes in vivo and the comparison of spectrally distinct fluorescent reporters in cell culture
Malignant priapism due to penile metastases. Case series and literature review
Malignant priapism secondary to penile metastases is a rare condition. This term was originally used by Peacock in 1938 to describe a condition of painful induration and erection of the penis due to metastatic infiltration by a neoplasm. In the current literature there are 512 case reports. The primary tumor sites are bladder, prostate and rectum. The treatment has only palliative intent and consists of local tumor excision, penectomy, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. We present one case of malignant priapism originated from prostate cancer, and two from urothelial carcinoma of the bladder. Different approaches in diagnosis and therapy were performed. The entire three patient reported a relief of the pain following the treatment, with an improvement of their quality of life, even though it was only temporary as a palliative. Malignant priapism is a rare medical emergency. Penile/pelvis magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan and corporal biopsies are considered an effective method of diagnosis of the primary organ site.Malignant priapism secondary to penile

Phase-Retrieved Tomography enables imaging of a Tumor Spheroid in Mesoscopy Regime
Optical tomographic imaging of biological specimen bases its reliability on
the combination of both accurate experimental measures and advanced
computational techniques. In general, due to high scattering and absorption in
most of the tissues, multi view geometries are required to reduce diffuse halo
and blurring in the reconstructions. Scanning processes are used to acquire the
data but they inevitably introduces perturbation, negating the assumption of
aligned measures. Here we propose an innovative, registration free, imaging
protocol implemented to image a human tumor spheroid at mesoscopic regime. The
technique relies on the calculation of autocorrelation sinogram and object
autocorrelation, finalizing the tomographic reconstruction via a three
dimensional Gerchberg Saxton algorithm that retrieves the missing phase
information. Our method is conceptually simple and focuses on single image
acquisition, regardless of the specimen position in the camera plane. We
demonstrate increased deep resolution abilities, not achievable with the
current approaches, rendering the data alignment process obsolete.Comment: 21 pages, 5 figure
Fluctuations of radiation from a chaotic laser below threshold
Radiation from a chaotic cavity filled with gain medium is considered. A set
of coupled equations describing the photon density and the population of gain
medium is proposed and solved. The spectral distribution and fluctuations of
the radiation are found. The full noise is a result of a competition between
positive correlations of photons with equal frequencies (due to stimulated
emission and chaotic scattering) which increase fluctuations, and a suppression
due to interaction with a gain medium which leads to negative correlations
between photons. The latter effect is responsible for a pronounced suppression
of the photonic noise as compared to the linear theory predictions.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures; expanded version, to appear in Phys. Rev.
