    STEM materials: a new frontier for an intelligent sustainable world

    Materials are addressed as possible enablers for solutions to many global societal challenges. A foresight exercise has been conducted to identify research paths to design, with a new approach, a generation of materials which can provide multi-functionalities. These material systems have been named ???stem???, in analogy to living cells where a base of primitive units can be designed and assembled for self-reacting to external inputs. These materials will embed a concept of ???internet in things???, where their processing capacity will enable the systems to interact with the environment and express diverse functionalities. Stem materials do not exist yet, but many clues from diferent theoretical and experimental results suggest they can be developed, and because living organisms exist. This article aims at launching this new approach and promoting the structuring of a multi-disciplinary community to fll the research gaps

    Modeling user mobility via user psychological and geographical behaviors towards point of-interest recommendation

The pervasive employments of Location-based Social Network call for precise and personalized Point-of-Interest (POI) recommendation to predict which places the users prefer. Modeling user mobility, as an important component of understanding user preference, plays an essential role in POI recommendation. However, existing methods mainly model user mobility through analyzing the check-in data and formulating a distribution without considering why a user checks in at a specific place from psychological perspective. In this paper, we propose a POI recommendation algorithm modeling user mobility by considering check-in data and geographical information. Specifically, with check-in data, we propose a novel probabilistic latent factor model to formulate user psychological behavior from the perspective of utility theory, which could help reveal the inner information underlying the comparative choice behaviors of users. Geographical behavior of all the historical check-ins captured by a power law distribution is then combined with probabilistic latent factor model to form the POI recommendation algorithm. Extensive evaluation experiments conducted on two real-world datasets confirm the superiority of our approach over state-of-the-art methods

    Automatic quality control of cardiac MRI segmentation in large-scale population imaging

    The trend towards large-scale studies including population imaging poses new challenges in terms of quality control (QC). This is a particular issue when automatic processing tools such as image segmentation methods are employed to derive quantitative measures or biomarkers for further analyses. Manual inspection and visual QC of each segmentation result is not feasible at large scale. However, it is important to be able to detect when an automatic method fails to avoid inclusion of wrong measurements into subsequent analyses which could otherwise lead to incorrect conclusions. To overcome this challenge, we explore an approach for predicting segmentation quality based on reverse classification accuracy, which enables us to discriminate between successful and failed cases. We validate this approach on a large cohort of cardiac MRI for which manual QC scores were available. Our results on 7,425 cases demonstrate the potential for fully automatic QC in the context of large-scale population imaging such as the UK Biobank Imaging Study

    Synthesis and structure of free-standing germanium quantum dots and their application in live cell imaging

    Free-standing Ge quantum dots around 3 nm in size were synthesized using a bench-top colloidal method and suspended in water and ethanol. In the ethanol solution, the photoluminescence of the Ge quantum dots was observed between 650 and 800 nm. Structural and optical properties of these colloidal Ge quantum dots were investigated by utilizing X-ray diffraction, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and photoluminescence spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The structure of the as-prepared Ge quantum dots that were found is best described by a core-shell model with a small crystalline core and an amorphous outer shell with a surface that was terminated by hydrogen-related species. As-prepared Ge quantum dots were suspended in cell growth medium, and then loaded into cervical carcinoma (HeLa) cells. The fluorescent microscopy images were then collected using 405 nm, 488 nm, 561 nm and 647 nm wavelengths. We observed that, based on fluorescence measurements, as-prepared Ge quantum dots can remain stable for up to 4 weeks in water. Investigation of toxicity, based on a viability test, of as-prepared uncoated Ge quantum dots in HeLa cells was carried out and compared with the commercial carboxyl coated CdSe/ZnSe quantum dots.     Properties of plasmoids observed in Saturnā€™s dayside and nightside magnetodisc

    Plasmoid is a key structure for transferring magnetic flux and plasma in planetary magnetospheres. At Earth, plasmoids are key media which transfer energy and mass in the "Dungey Cycle". For giant planets, plasmoids are primarily generated by the dynamic processes associated with ā€œVasyliunas Cycleā€. It is generally believed that planetary magnetotails are favorable for producing plasmoids. Nevertheless, recent studies reveal that magnetic field lines could be sufficiently stretched to allow magnetic reconnection in Saturnā€™s dayside magnetodisc. In the study, we report direct observations of plasmoids in Saturnā€™s dayside magnetodisc for the first time. Moreover, we perform a statistical investigation on the global plasmoid electron density distribution. The results show an inverse correlation between the nightside plasmoid electron density and local time, and the maximum plasmoid electron density around prenoon local time on the dayside. These results are consistent with the magnetospheric circulation picture associated with the "Vasyliunas Cycle"

    Fr-TM-align: a new protein structural alignment method based on fragment alignments and the TM-score

Most structure comparison methods involve generation of an initial seed alignment, which is extended and/or refined to provide the best structural superposition between a pair of protein structures as assessed by a structure comparison metric. One such metric, the TM-score, was recently introduced to provide a combined structure quality measure of the coordinate root mean square deviation between a pair of structures and coverage. Using the TM-score, the TM-align structure alignment algorithm was developed that was often found to have better accuracy and coverage than the most commonly used structural alignment programs; however, there were a number of situations when this was not true. Results: To further improve structure alignment quality, the Fr-TM-align algorithm has been developed where aligned fragment pairs are used to generate the initial seed alignments that are then refined using dynamic programming to maximize the TM-score. For the assessment of the structural alignment quality from Fr-TM-align in comparison to other programs such as CE and TMalign, we examined various alignment quality assessment scores such as PSI and TM-score. The assessment showed that the structural alignment quality from Fr-TM-align is better in comparison to both CE and TM-align. On average, the structural alignments generated using Fr-TM-align have a higher TM-score (~9%) and coverage (~7%) in comparison to those generated by TM-align. Fr- TM-align uses an exhaustive procedure to generate initial seed alignments. Hence, the algorithm is computationally more expensive than TM-align. Conclusion: Fr-TM-align, a new algorithm that employs fragment alignment and assembly provides better structural alignments in comparison to TM-align.     On the Stability and Structural Dynamics of Metal Nanowires

    This article presents a brief review of the nanoscale free-electron model, which provides a continuum description of metal nanostructures. It is argued that surface and quantum-size effects are the two dominant factors in the energetics of metal nanowires, and that much of the phenomenology of nanowire stability and structural dynamics can be understood based on the interplay of these two competing factors. A linear stability analysis reveals that metal nanocylinders with certain magic conductance values G=1, 3, 6, 12, 17, 23, 34, 42, 51, 67, 78, 96, ... times the conductance quantum are exceptionally stable. A nonlinear dynamical simulation of nanowire structural evolution reveals a universal equilibrium shape consisting of a magic cylinder suspended between unduloidal contacts.     Metabolomics of the interaction between PPAR-Ī± and age in the PPAR-Ī±-null mouse

    Regulation between the fed and fasted states in mammals is partially controlled by peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-Ī± (PPAR-Ī±). Expression of the receptor is high in the liver, heart and skeletal muscle, but decreases with age. A combined 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry metabolomic approach has been used to examine metabolism in the liver, heart, skeletal muscle and adipose tissue in PPAR-Ī±-null mice and wild-type controls during ageing between 3 and 13 months. For the PPAR-Ī±-null mouse, multivariate statistics highlighted hepatic steatosis, reductions in the concentrations of glucose and glycogen in both the liver and muscle tissue, and profound changes in lipid metabolism in each tissue, reflecting known expression targets of the PPAR-Ī± receptor. Hepatic glycogen and glucose also decreased with age for both genotypes. These findings indicate the development of age-related hepatic steatosis in the PPAR-Ī±-null mouse, with the normal metabolic changes associated with ageing exacerbating changes associated with genotype. Furthermore, the combined metabolomic and multivariate statistics approach provides a robust method for examining the interaction between age and genotype

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Pseudogenes, nonfunctional copies of genes, evolve fast due the lack of evolutionary pressures and thus appear in several different forms. PseudoGeneQuest is an online tool to search the human genome for a given query sequence and to identify different types of pseudogenes as well as novel genes and gene fragments.</p> <p>Description</p> <p>The service can detect pseudogenes, that have arisen either by retrotransposition or segmental genome duplication, many of which are not listed in the public pseudogene databases. The service has a user-friendly web interface and uses a powerful computer cluster in order to perform parallel searches and provide relatively fast runtimes despite exhaustive database searches and analyses.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>PseudoGeneQuest is a versatile tool for detecting novel pseudogene candidates from the human genome. The service searches human genome sequences for five types of pseudogenes and provides an output that allows easy further analysis of observations. In addition to the result file the system provides visualization of the results linked to Ensembl Genome Browser. PseudoGeneQuest service is freely available.</p
