Possible Role of Nrf2 in Oxidative and Inflammatory Processes During Menopause

    Get PDF
The increase in life expectancy leads to the possibility of development chronic diseases, from special physiological conditions as occurs in the menopause, which is defined as the permanent cessation of ovulation, marked by the end of menstruation. It has been related to decreased ovarian function that occurs around an age of 45 years. This event involves the reduction in estrogen production and may contribute to the development of chronic-degenerative diseases. Many diseases developed during menopause have been associated with oxidative stress, such as osteoporosis, hot flushes, cognitive impairment, insulin resistance, dry skin, obesity, and cardiovascular events. The knowledge about the participation of Nrf2 in diseases that occur during menopause is very limited. Here, only diseases such as osteoporosis, cardiovascular diseases and dry skin, which are present during menopause and its later stages have been described. The Nrf2 pathway involves the participation of PI3K/Akt, MAPK, and eNOS, which act as mediators for cytoprotection and antioxidation. Compounds such as equol, fitoestrogens, alkyl cathecols, or curcumin could be offered as options to antioxidant treatment, added the fact that they are present in fruits and vegetables which are rich in vitamins, minerals and calcium, thus including all the required nutrients for an adequate nutrition

Knowledge-based approach for the integration of the planning and scheduling decision-making levels

    Get PDF
This work aims to integrate the tactical and operational decision making levels. A typical Scheduling mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model has been solved using several demand scenarios. The results have been analyzed and accordingly the operation cost vs. production levels nonlinear equations have been obtained. The aforementioned equations have been included as constraints of the SC planning problem. Hence, production, inventory and distribution variables along the complete SC have been optimized using a NLP model.Postprint (published version

Seven new records of Taxidea taxus (American badger) and Procyon lotor (raccoon) were documented for the northern states of Chihuahua and Durango, Mexico. Four of them are new localities for T. taxus, a species considered threatened, and 3 new locality records belongs to P. lotor. These records fill gaps in the geographical distribution of these carnivores in northern Mexico.RESUMEN.

Optimal planning and feedstock-mix selection for multiproduct polymer production

    Get PDF
In this paper, we describe a nonlinear programming model to determine the optimal balance of feedstocks to manufacture multiple polymer grades in a polypropylene production facility. The main units of the process are a distillation column and a polymerization reactor, for which accurate short-cut process models were developed. Both a single and multiple product formulations are presented. The proposed models seek to maximize the plant throughput while minimizing the production costs. The possibility of adding extra production is also considered. The formulations are applied to several case studies, both to analyze the performance of the model and to illustrate its potential economic impact. The trade-off between feedstocks costs and production rates is analyzed by solving the multiple-product model with different time horizons. An annualized-slate long term case study is presented. The proposed formulation with a user-friendly interface has been deployed to assist with commercial and operation decisions at the plant. The authors would like to acknowledge the financial support received from Braskem America and the Center for Advanced Process Decision Making (CAPD)

Differential leukocyte expression of IFITM1 and IFITM3 in patients with severe pandemic influenza A(H1N1) and COVID-19

Interferon-induced transmembrane (IFITM) proteins mediate protection against enveloped viruses by blocking membrane fusion at endosomes. IFITM1 and IFITM3 are crucial for protection against influenza, and various single nucleotide polymorphisms altering their function have been linked to disease susceptibility. However, bulk IFITM1 and IFITM3 mRNA expression dynamics and their correlation with clinical outcomes have not been extensively addressed in patients with respiratory infections. In this study, we evaluated the expression of IFITM1 and IFITM3 in peripheral leukocytes from healthy controls and individuals with severe pandemic influenza A(H1N1) or coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Comparisons between participants grouped according to their clinical characteristics, underlying disease, and outcomes showed that the downregulation of IFITM1 was a distinctive characteristic of severe pandemic influenza A(H1N1) that correlated with outcomes, including mortality. Conversely, increased IFITM3 expression was a common feature of severe pandemic influenza A(H1N1) and COVID-19. Using a high-dose murine model of infection, we confirmed not only the downregulation of IFITM1 but also of IFITM3 in the lungs of mice with severe influenza, as opposed to humans. Analyses in the comparative cohort also indicate the possible participation of IFITM3 in COVID-19. Our results add to the evidence supporting a protective function of IFITM proteins against viral respiratory infections in humans.Introduction Methods - Human samples - IFITM expression in humans - Influenza infection in mice - IFITM expression in mice - Cytokine levels in mouse lungs - Study approval - Statistical analysis Results - Participant characteristics - IFITM1 and IFITM3 in patients with severe pandemic influenza A(H1N1) - High-dose influenza A (H1N1) virus infection downregulates IFITM expression in mice - IFITM1 and IFITM3 in severe COVID-19 Discussio

The Mexican consensus on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of NSAID-induced gastropathy and enteropathy
