A pulsed, mono-energetic and angular-selective UV photo-electron source for the commissioning of the KATRIN experiment
The KATRIN experiment aims to determine the neutrino mass scale with a
sensitivity of 200 meV/c^2 (90% C.L.) by a precision measurement of the shape
of the tritium -spectrum in the endpoint region. The energy analysis of
the decay electrons is achieved by a MAC-E filter spectrometer. To determine
the transmission properties of the KATRIN main spectrometer, a mono-energetic
and angular-selective electron source has been developed. In preparation for
the second commissioning phase of the main spectrometer, a measurement phase
was carried out at the KATRIN monitor spectrometer where the device was
operated in a MAC-E filter setup for testing. The results of these measurements
are compared with simulations using the particle-tracking software
"Kassiopeia", which was developed in the KATRIN collaboration over recent

One particle interchain hopping in coupled Hubbard chains
Interchain hopping in systems of coupled chains of correlated electrons is
investigated by exact diagonalizations and Quantum-Monte-Carlo methods. For two
weakly coupled Hubbard chains at commensurate densities (e.g. n=1/3) the
splitting at the Fermi level between bonding and antibonding bands is strongly
reduced (but not suppressed) by repulsive interactions extending to a few
lattice spacings. The magnitude of this reduction is directly connected to the
exponent of the 1D Luttinger liquid. However, we show that the
incoherent part of the single particle spectral function is much less affected
by the interchain coupling. This suggests that incoherent interchain hopping

Distribution of spectral weight in a system with disordered stripes
The ``band-structure'' of a disordered stripe array is computed and compared,
at a qualitative level, to angle resolved photoemission experiments on the
cuprate high temperature superconductors. The low-energy states are found to be
strongly localized transverse to the stripe direction, so the electron dynamics
is strictly one-dimensional (along the stripe). Despite this, aspects of the
two dimensional band-structure Fermi surface are still vividly apparent.Comment: 10 pages, 11 figure
Critical Properties in Dynamical Charge Correlation Function for the One-Dimensional Mott Insulator
Critical properties in the dynamical charge correlation function for the
one-dimensional Mott insulator are studied. By properly taking into account
{\it the final-state interaction} between the charge and spin degrees of
freedom, we find that the edge singularity in the charge correlation function
is governed by massless spinon excitations, although it is naively expected
that spinons do not directly contribute to the charge excitation over the
Hubbard gap. We obtain the momentum-dependent anomalous critical exponent by
applying the finite-size scaling analysis to the Bethe ansatz solution of the

Entrepreneurs’ age, institutions, and social value creation goals: a multi-country study
This study explores the relationship between an entrepreneur's age and his/her social value creation goals. Building on the lifespan developmental psychology literature and institutional theory, we hypothesize a U-shaped relationship between entrepreneurs’ age and their choice to create social value through their ventures, such that younger and older entrepreneurs create more social value with their businesses while middle age entrepreneurs are relatively more economically and less socially oriented with their ventures. We further hypothesize that the quality of a country’s formal institutions in terms of economic, social, and political freedom steepen the U-shaped relationship between entrepreneurs’ age and their choice to pursue social value creation as supportive institutional environments allow entrepreneurs to follow their age-based preferences. We confirm our predictions using multilevel mixed-effects linear regressions on a sample of over 15,000 entrepreneurs (aged between 18 and 64 years) in 45 countries from Global Entrepreneurship Monitor data. The findings are robust to several alternative specifications. Based on our findings, we discuss implications for theory and practice, and we propose future research directions
The determinants of election to the United Nations Security Council

The final publication is available at Springer via http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s11127-013-0096-4.The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is the foremost international body responsible for the maintenance of international peace and security. Members vote on issues of global importance and consequently receive perks—election to the UNSC predicts, for instance, World Bank and IMF loans. But who gets elected to the UNSC? Addressing this question empirically is not straightforward as it requires a model that allows for discrete choices at the regional and international levels; the former nominates candidates while the latter ratifies them. Using an original multiple discrete choice model to analyze a dataset of 180 elections from 1970 to 2005, we find that UNSC election appears to derive from a compromise between the demands of populous countries to win election more frequently and a norm of giving each country its turn. We also find evidence that richer countries from the developing world win election more often, while involvement in warfare lowers election probability. By contrast, development aid does not predict election
Low Temperature Lanczos Method
We present a modified finite temperature Lanczos method for the evaluation of
dynamical and static quantities of strongly correlated electron systems that
complements the finite temperature method (FTLM) introduced by Jaklic and
Prelovsek for low temperatures. Together they allow accurate calculations at
any temperature with moderate effort. As an example we calculate the static
spin correlation function and the regular part of the optical conductivity of
the one dimensional Hubbard model at half-filling and show in detail the
connection between the ground state and finite temperature method. By using
Cluster Perturbation Theory (CPT), the finite temperature spectral function is
extended to the infinite system, clearly exhibiting the effects of spin-charge

Altered gene expression profiles impair the nervous system development in individuals with 15q13.3 microdeletion
The 15q13.3 microdeletion has pleiotropic effects ranging from apparently healthy to severely affected individuals. The underlying basis of the variable phenotype remains elusive. We analyzed gene expression using blood from three individuals with 15q13.3 microdeletion and brain cortex tissue from ten mice Df[h15q13]/+. We assessed differentially expressed genes (DEGs), protein–protein interaction (PPI) functional modules, and gene expression in brain developmental stages. The deleted genes’ haploinsufficiency was not transcriptionally compensated, suggesting a dosage effect may contribute to the pathomechanism. DEGs shared between tested individuals and a corresponding mouse model show a significant overlap including genes involved in monogenic neurodevelopmental disorders. Yet, network-wide dysregulatory effects suggest the phenotype is not caused by a single critical gene. A significant proportion of blood DEGs, silenced in adult brain, have maximum expression during the prenatal brain development. Based on DEGs and their PPI partners we identified altered functional modules related to developmental processes, including nervous system development. We show that the 15q13.3 microdeletion has a ubiquitous impact on the transcriptome pattern, especially dysregulation of genes involved in brain development. The high phenotypic variability seen in 15q13.3 microdeletion could stem from an increased vulnerability during brain development, instead of a specific pathomechanism
