    Selection of heavy ion reaction channels via particle K X-ray coincidences

    To identify the residual nuclei in very asymmetric heavy-ion reactions heavy-ion K X-ray coincidences have been measured. The usefulness and limitations of this method are discussed, and its feasibility is demonstrated in a study of the 14N+197Au reaction at 140 MeV

    First analysis of anisotropic flow with Lee--Yang zeroes

    We report on the first analysis of directed and elliptic flow with the new method of Lee--Yang zeroes. Experimental data are presented for Ru+Ru reactions at 1.69 AGeV measured with the FOPI detector at SIS/GSI. The results obtained with several methods, based on the event-plane reconstruction, on Lee--Yang zeroes, and on multi-particle cumulants (up to 5th order) applied for the first time at SIS energies, are compared. They show conclusive evidence that azimuthal correlations between nucleons and composite particles at this energy are largely dominated by anisotropic flow.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Phys.     Freeze-out configuration properties in the 197Au + 197Au reaction at 23 AMeV

    Data from the experiment on the 197Au + 197Au reaction at 23 AMeV are analyzed with an aim to find signatures of exotic nuclear configurations such as toroid-shaped objects. The experimental data are compared with predictions of the ETNA code dedicated to look for such configurations and with the QMD model. A novel criterion of selecting events possibly resulting from the formation of exotic freeze-out configurations, "the efficiency factor", is tested. Comparison between experimental data and model predictions may indicate for the formation of flat/toroidal nuclear systems

    Identification of baryon resonances in central heavy-ion collisions at energies between 1 and 2 AGeV

    The mass distributions of baryon resonances populated in near-central collisions of Au on Au and Ni on Ni are deduced by defolding the ptp_t spectra of charged pions by a method which does not depend on a specific resonance shape. In addition the mass distributions of resonances are obtained from the invariant masses of (p,π±)(p, \pi^{\pm}) pairs. With both methods the deduced mass distributions are shifted by an average value of -60 MeV/c2^2 relative to the mass distribution of the free Δ(1232)\Delta(1232) resonance, the distributions descent almost exponentially towards mass values of 2000 MeV/c^2. The observed differences between (p,π)(p, \pi^-) and (p,π+)(p, \pi^+) pairs indicate a contribution of isospin I=1/2I = 1/2 resonances. The attempt to consistently describe the deduced mass distributions and the reconstructed kinetic energy spectra of the resonances leads to new insights about the freeze out conditions, i.e. to rather low temperatures and large expansion velocities.Comment: 30 pages, 13 figures, Latex using documentstyle[12pt,a4,epsfig], to appear in Eur.     Abundance of Delta Resonances in 58Ni+58Ni Collisions between 1 and 2 AGeV

    Charged pion spectra measured in 58Ni-58Ni collisions at 1.06, 1.45 and 1.93 AGeV are interpreted in terms of a thermal model including the decay of Delta resonances. The transverse momentum spectra of pions are well reproduced by adding the pions originating from the Delta-resonance decay to the component of thermal pions, deduced from the high transverse momentum part of the pion spectra. About 10 and 18% of the nucleons are excited to Delta states at freeze-out for beam energies of 1 and 2 AGeV, respectively.Comment: 14 pages, LaTeX with 3 included figures; submitted to Physics Letters

    K^0 and \Lambda production in Ni + Ni collisions near threshold

    New results concerning the production of neutral strange particles, K0K^0 and Λ\Lambda in Ni + Ni collisions at 1.93AA GeV, measured with the FOPI detector at GSI-Darmstadt, are presented. Rapidity density distributions and Boltzmann slope parameter distributions are measured in nearly the full phase space of the reaction. The observables are compared to existing K+K^+ and proton data. While the K0K^0 data agree with previously reported K+K^+ measurements, the Λ\Lambda distributions show a different behavior relative to that of protons. The strangeness balance and the production yield per participating nucleon as a function of the centrality of the reaction are discussed, for the first time at SIS energies.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figure

    Charged pions from Ni on Ni collisions between 1 and 2 AGeV

    Charged pions from Ni + Ni reactions at 1.05, 1.45 and 1.93 AGeV are measured with the FOPI detector. The mean π±\pi^{\pm} multiplicities per mean number of participants increase with beam energy, in accordance with earlier studies of the Ar + KCl and La + La systems. The pion kinetic energy spectra have concave shape and are fitted by the superposition of two Boltzmann distributions with different temperatures. These apparent temperatures depend only weakly on bombarding energy. The pion angular distributions show a forward/backward enhancement at all energies, but not the Θ=900\Theta = 90^0 enhancement which was observed in case of the Au + Au system. These features also determine the rapidity distributions which are therefore in disagreement with the hypothesis of one thermal source. The importance of the Coulomb interaction and of the pion rescattering by spectator matter in producing these phenomena is discussed
