    Software project planning through comparison of Bio-inspired algorithms

    Currently many organizations have adopted the development of software projects with agile methodologies, particularly Scrum, which has more than 20 years of development. In these methodologies, software is developed iteratively and delivered to the client in increments called releases. In the releases, the goal is to develop system functionality that quickly adds value to the client’s business. At the beginning of the project, one or more releases are planned. For solving the problem of replanning in the context of releases, a model is proposed considering the characteristics of agile development using Scrum. The results obtained show that the algorithm takes a little less than 7 min for solutions that propose replanning composed by 16 sprints, which is equivalent to 240 days of project.     Management model for the logistics and competitiveness of SMEs in the city of Barranquilla

    In Colombia, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are the most powerful engines of economic development, since they generate a high volume of jobs in the national territory, while diversifying productive, commercial, and service activities. In order to propose a model for logistics management as a component for the competitiveness of SMEs, a qualitative study is proposed that will allow us to collect from a structured review of recent literature, identifying the elements to be taken into account for logistics management in order to provide timely support and open space for continuous improvement. The proposed model is structured in six main blocks: characterization of processes according to the activity of the SME, external factors of influence, internal factors of influence, feeding of information, monitoring and control of operations, and feedback between support areas. The above elements have been analyzed and suggested taking into account the specific aspects of SMEs in the country, and taking into account the peculiarities of these small productive cells

    Characterizing Protein-Protein Interactions with the Fragment Molecular Orbital Method

    Proteins are vital components of living systems, serving as building blocks, molecular machines, enzymes, receptors, ion channels, sensors, and transporters. Protein-protein interactions (PPIs) are a key part of their function. There are more than 645,000 reported disease-relevant PPIs in the human interactome, but drugs have been developed for only 2% of these targets. The advances in PPI-focused drug discovery are highly dependent on the availability of structural data and accurate computational tools for analysis of this data. Quantum mechanical approaches are often too expensive computationally, but the fragment molecular orbital (FMO) method offers an excellent solution that combines accuracy, speed and the ability to reveal key interactions that would otherwise be hard to detect. FMO provides essential information for PPI drug discovery, namely, identification of key interactions formed between residues of two proteins, including their strength (in kcal/mol) and their chemical nature (electrostatic or hydrophobic). In this chapter, we have demonstrated how three different FMO-based approaches (pair interaction energy analysis (PIE analysis), subsystem analysis (SA) and analysis of protein residue networks (PRNs)) have been applied to study PPI in three protein-protein complexes

    Epithelial cell polarity: a major gatekeeper against cancer?

    The correct establishment and maintenance of cell polarity are crucial for normal cell physiology and tissue homeostasis. Conversely, loss of cell polarity, tissue disorganisation and excessive cell growth are hallmarks of cancer. In this review, we focus on identifying the stages of tumoural development that are affected by the loss or deregulation of epithelial cell polarity. Asymmetric division has recently emerged as a major regulatory mechanism that controls stem cell numbers and differentiation. Links between cell polarity and asymmetric cell division in the context of cancer will be examined. Apical–basal polarity and cell–cell adhesion are tightly interconnected. Hence, how loss of cell polarity in epithelial cells may promote epithelial mesenchymal transition and metastasis will also be discussed. Altogether, we present the argument that loss of epithelial cell polarity may have an important role in both the initiation of tumourigenesis and in later stages of tumour development, favouring the progression of tumours from benign to malignancy

    The Path of More Resistance: a Comparison of National Healthcare Safety Network and Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute Criteria in Developing Cumulative Antimicrobial Susceptibility Test Reports and Institutional Antibiograms

    In the absence of antimicrobial susceptibility data, the institutional antibiogram is a valuable tool to guide clinicians in the empirical treatment of infections. However, there is a misunderstanding about how best to prepare cumulative antimicrobial susceptibility testing reports (CASTRs) to guide empirical therapy (e.g., routine antibiogram) versus monitoring antimicrobial resistance, with the former following guidance from the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) and the latter from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN). These criteria vary markedly in their exclusion or inclusion of isolates cultured repeatedly from the same patient. We compared rates of nonsusceptibility (NS) using annual data from a large teaching health care system subset to isolates eligible by either NHSN criteria or CLSI criteria. For a panel of the three most prevalent Gram-negative pathogens in combination with clinically relevant antimicrobial agents (or priority pathogen-agent combinations [PPACs]), we found that the inclusion of duplicate isolates by NHSN criteria yielded higher NS rates than when CLSI criteria (for which duplicate isolates are not included) were applied. Patients with duplicate isolates may not be representative of antimicrobial resistance within a population. For this reason, users of CASTR data should carefully consider that the criteria used to generate these reports can impact resulting NS rates and, therefore, maintain the distinction between CASTRs created for different purposes

    Ten-month-old calves Bos taurus taurus were immunized with three doses of SBm74621 with saponin as an adjuvant at 30-day intervals and were evaluated for IgG isotypes, phenotype circulating lymphocytes and changes in the lymph nodes (LN). SBm74621 stimulated the production of predominantly IgG1-isotype IgG antibodies. The lymph nodes exhibited activation at the seventh day after the first immunization, with areas of paracortical and interfollicular hyperplasia and the early formation of germinal centers (GC). Fifteen days after the first immunization, the GC exhibited compartmentalization of cellular populations, a light zone (LZ), a dark zone (DZ) and a mantle. At the same time, hyperplasia of the medullary cords was observed with cells associating with DC cells. Seven days after the first immunization, apoptosis in the DZ and in the paracortical region became evident. By day 15, there was an increase in the medullary cords, which became more numerous at days 35 and 42. PAP-positive cells were found in the paracortical region, medullary cords and GC 7 days after the first immunization. At day 35, there were further strongly PAP-positive cells in the medullary cords. By comparison, none of these changes were observed in the lymph nodes of control groups at any of the days analyzed. The number of CD21+ lymphocytes increased in the immunized groups after the first inoculation, with a maximum number observed at 15 and 10 days after the first and third immunizations, respectively. Compared to pre-immunization counts, the percentage of WC1+ gd T-lymphocytes displayed more variation, increasing 5 days after the second immunization but decreasing over the following days. According to the results, the synthetic anti Rhipicephalus microplus vaccine elicits a complete immune response being T-dependant
